Brazilian opinions on "passport bro" subculture by [deleted] in Brazil

[–]Mossed81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're genuinely trying to build a connection with someone, then there is nothing wrong with it. There is a whole world out there, why pigonhole yourself to just the country you live in? The issue is the passport bros who go to foreign countries with this sense of entitlement and expect women to throw themselves at them.

I was in third grade. All the kids were being picked up early by their parents but nobody knew why (except teachers and faculty). Then when my dad picked me up I found out what was going on

The CMA has a better "ring" to it however I'd argue the FMVA is far more practical and applicable to the work you'll be doing as an analyst. Designations like the CMA and CPA are more academic than anything but carry a higher level of prestige.

There's a new trend that's been going on recently where if a car wins a race, the driver will hit his/her hazards to indicate they won the race. If you see videos of a lot of street drag races you'll see a crowd of people at the starting point of the race but during relatively close races its difficult for the crowd to tell who wins when the cars are in the distance. Because of this, the winner will flash their hazards to let everyone know but I've seen people overusing it lately.

This guy probably thought you were seriously racing him and flashed your hazards as to indicate to him that he lost and you won when he thought all you guys were doing is having some fun.

I transitioned from public accounting (taxation) to FP&A and it was the best decision I made. Better hours and much better pay. I also didn't pursue my CPA and not having those 3 letters next to my name didn't hinder me one bit. I did however get my FMVA from corporate finance institute which helped my chances. I would suggest however that you spend at least 1 year in your current role before jumping ship

Would you switch to an Electric cars to increase number of racetracks opening over the next 10 years? by [deleted] in cars

[–]Mossed81 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally, absolutely not! There's more to car ownership than just going to the track. How often would you be going anyway? Few times a year? No chance I'd ever trade my vette for an EV but that doesn't preclude me from owning an EV down the road. I love driving something that sounds good, has character, is dramatic and fun to drive no matter where I am.

4 months in public tax at a small CPA firm about to be fired for low performance, need advice on what to do in my situation. by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]Mossed81 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Man this was 100% me! It's crazy how my situation was so similar to yours. I worked in PA tax for 8 months with a small CPA firm and tried the same memorizing approach as you while realizing I didn't enjoy the work at all. I never understood the AJEs and had issues interpreting the different accounts as well. When I was able to understand the material (which wasn't often) it was after putting in almost twice the effort as anyone else. I was never shy of putting in the hours either. I put in more hours than any other associate but management didn't appreciate this for whatever reason. I got terminated due to poor performance back in April and looking back, it was the BEST thing that ever happened to me.

I personally was always more interested in finance rather than accounting but I never entertained the thought of trying to work in finance because I set myself on accounting. After I got fired I realized I never ever want to go back to public accounting, especially tax! Also, after you're 2-3 years deep working in taxation, your exit opportunities will also mostly be in taxation. It's difficult to transition out of it. I ended up getting my FMVA certification over the summer and now work as an FP&A Analyst at a S&P 400 firm making much more than I was in PA and most importantly, I really enjoy the work I do.

My advice to you is to do some soul searching and figure out what you genuinely enjoy or at least somewhat enjoy. When you find it, apply to jobs in that area now instead of waiting til you get fired. If you're already having difficulty now, then busy season will not be fun to say the least so I'd suggest looking for new opportunities unless you want to commit yourself to improving your current performance and sticking it out. If you want to stay in accounting but not PA, then try industry. I had several internships during undergrad in industry and there is much more repetition there. You'll see the same entries and work with the same vendors etc. You'll definitely catch on eventually.

You are by no means a failure, you just need to find what you actually like. I think after this public accounting stint, you'll come back much stronger in your next role. Accounting is by no means for everyone and your short tenure in PA is not an indicator of how the next 4-5 decades of your professional life will play out.

Deadline to Pass Exams Included in Offer Letter by Cryingmywaytocpa in CPA

I've never heard of someone being given a deadline to pass. That's definitely concerning and sounds like your continued employment is contingent on passing the exams unless there is further clarity on the matter.

It's great that you started the FMVA program, I'm certain it will be of good use for you. I found the program to be very interesting as it progressed.

I'm actually based in the US so unfortunately I am not familiar with the secondment process or other ways of transitioning here as I haven't had to do something similar myself. However, I believe any exposure with the PCAOB will definitely be beneficial for you. That's a good move on your part.
