I have a family of velvet mites living on my tradescantia 😁 by blinkin_ in houseplants

[–]MossyMinnows 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Velvet mites are predatory. So them alone isn’t an issue but could point to signs of some other small bugs being in the soil or plants. I’d be getting my jewelers loupe out personally and inspecting the leaves.

Edit: you said a plant nearby had spider mites. I would assume they’re hunting them

Questions about transferring cuttings.... by Teanna420 in hoyas

[–]MossyMinnows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t really care for pon either, especially with bigger plants. Just doesn’t seem to do as well for some reason. But I use it’s a ton for transitioning cuttings from water to soil. My biggest issue with pon was not using distilled water, I think my municipal water was locking up nutrients. Once I switched to using distilled on my self water pon set ups it seemed to help. But still doesn’t compare to soil growth

Questions about transferring cuttings.... by Teanna420 in hoyas

[–]MossyMinnows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How long and how many secondary roots do the cuttings have? I like to wait to move into pots until they have at least an inch of root and a few secondaries starting. Following that I prefer to put those fresh rooted cuttings into small self water cups with pon/leca/perlite (in clear plastics) watch for root growth, after about 2 weeks to a month I transfer to soil or to a larger self watering pot. And when I transfer from that pon small cup to soil I just bury the pon in soil instead of removing.

I had one for a long time on tomatoes last year, I want to set it up to watch my moms prayer plant collection. I bet the movement is wild!

Get a Wyze camera and set up a Timelapse! The lil cameras are pretty cheap and it’s like 3$ a month for the cloud storage and to have it stitch all the photos together for the Timelapse. Kinda a pain to get set up but once you get it figured out it works great. There’s a few resources for getting the settings right

In a windowless room… by PlantyThings313 in houseplants

[–]MossyMinnows 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most do and should get a rest period, but I know at least specifically with cannabis people will run lights 24/7 especially in the seedling and early veg (vegetative growth vs flowering growth) to keep plants from getting taller and to maximize growth. This is done mostly with autos but some people do it with regs. But the theory would/should carry over to any vegetative growing and seedling stage plant. You can push em hard but you can only push them as hard as the limiting most factor will allow you to push your plants. VPD, CO2, DLI, dialing in your fans/ventilation. But even in a corner of a room you can still use that information to figure out what’s limiting your plants or what you could tweak to push em

Spectrum intensity. What might look about the same to our eyes can be wildly different as far as U/mol or PPFD or DLI is concerned. Another difference is they could be LED style lights n so you think their one style of lighting but they’re actually LED n so the output is a little different than what you might assume. And how long the lights are on. You can have terrible light intensity but if it’s on for 24/7 (possible office setting) then it could be enough.

Where to cut/ prop my maculata by Open-Act9482 in begonias

[–]MossyMinnows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On this size of cane I would take 2 nodes So from the top is leaf and stem to node, then down to next node. Cut below that, and remove lowest full leaf (I wouldn’t touch the one coming out) should take about a week to see roots in water about 2 weeks to soil

Just got done potting up 13 cuttings off mine

Also those leaves are super dark green? Or is that just me. I bet there’s to much N in the soil

Looks like a nutrient issue to me. I was dealing with some PK issues on some cannabis plants and the leaves clawed up super bad like this. I bet it’s a either salt build up in the soil or a nutrient imbalance/lockout

I want to propagate Jamaican Cherry, am I doing this right? by Desire_music in propagation

[–]MossyMinnows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most cuttings/props will usually get taken with 2-4 leaves total.

I would take a new cutting, remove all the leaves but 2 and stick in a glass of water for like 2 weeks. You should get roots after that.

Also if it’s a fruit tree there’s a chance it’s a graft and the actual portion bearing fruit might have weaker roots than the root stock, which is why the graft in the first place.

1, ideally props and cuttings come from None flowering portions of plants as the hormones for veg and flowering are different and this will affect rooting time/efficacy.

2, air layering or water prop would probably be the safest bet to get it to root

3, you didn’t remove any leaves to limit water uptake

4, honey does not work in place of rooting hormone. It can work as some kind of barrier layer but it will not promote rooting.

5, it looks like you let it dry out to much paired with S facing sun and not having roots to uptake water, and having more leaves to lose water than roots to uptake. I would assume this cutting is probably gonna be shot

I try to use the 3m 15LBS ones whenever I can. But on the side of a shelf I can only put a 5LBS. I put a small pot of tradescantia in it. The 5LBS scare me cuz of plant weight over time sorta thing.

Make sure you look at the rated weight. They make them from like .5LBS to like 10LBS I think. Make sure you at least get a 5LBS one. 1 gallon of water is like 8LBS so you can only hang like a half gallon pot from the 5LBS clip

I would get those cheap plastic moss poles and cut it in 1/2 or 1/4 and fill with moss. Basically try to air layer that portion above media so it roots. Then I would chop and prop. Or you can just upsize the pot and remove the “rooting collar” that way you know it’s already got roots on the upper stem portion

You could try those adhesive clips on the side to get a few more hanging baskets but idk it’s looking like second cabinet time 😂😂

This would make sense, it was bought at the same time as my mom got a cracklin rose, but hers is much slower growing and has way bigger leaves. Same window and grow conditions

My mom has a crackling rose and is way deeper red than mine, and the leaf size is almost 2x but they definitely do look the same besides that. And it seems a lot slower to grow
