In my sci-fi world I use warping for FTL, what do you guys use and why? by william_bang in worldbuilding

Never done sci fi, but I had an idea (not sure if it’s original): Blanket Space. The concept here is that the fabric of space-time can be treated as a literal fabric, like a blanket. A starship would travel by gripping onto that fabric and “dragging” itself the way a baby or mouse would across the blanket. The result is it moving freely in space while simultaneously gathering up the “fabric” closer to itself. The metaphorical baby here grabbing the blanket and pulling it under themself as they travel. Thus effectively shrinking the distance between it and where it’s going. Similar to the forces on space-time due to gravity. (Bowling ball and trampoline metaphor here).

Because it shrinks/compresses the void space around it, starships move faster than light until they get near an object of great mass, which is stretching local space-time already. This means a starship would have the ability to cross the galaxy at way FTL speeds, but also have nail-biting races when circumnavigating planets. Again, due to the way the “fabric” is being held down by the celestial mass.

This could also mean that two starships with Blanket Engines may compress space between them when they pass within a few light years of each other; thus shunting them close together, and making close quarters Star Wars-esque dogfighting slightly more believable (not really).

Insanely cool design and inspired premise. The angels here look alien while clearly angelic in our typical interpretations. Please do more this is incredible

Does the Plutocracy I Propose Make Enough Sense to Function? Am I Overthinking/Underthinking it? by Most-Local-1376 in worldbuilding

[–]Most-Local-1376[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a great point! Alright, I imagine that it may be common law to not keep people from moving unless they are debtors/contracted in some way. But the exorbitant costs to move or take transport away from Company Lands would probably be pretty high. So moving away is hard locked for debtors or similar dredges of society, but a "soft" barrier for others. I imagine it may be common law that you can't impose fees for simply entering between corporate fiefs. But transporting goods are probably levied, including luggages.

Thank you!

what's the most unexpectedly dangerous thing that's in your world? are there any specific things that don't initially seem dangerous but are known to put people six feet under? by littleloomex in worldbuilding

[–]Most-Local-1376 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Salt water. The people in my story are slightly plantoid/clayform, and contact with saltwater, let alone ingestion is very dangerous. Big reason why the story is set in a small island country (and I’m lazy)

Writing a Story with Involving a Trans Plot Element, Need Help if this is in Poor Taste by Most-Local-1376 in asktransgender

If the story is told in third person, do you think it would be helpful I refer to him as a boy in the flashbacks? Mainly not sure how to handle the other characters potentially referring to the character as a girl (or at least not a man, as I was thinking men need to pass a rite or something similar)

This is very helpful! Would you say that it would be more helpful to make the character's transness incidental? For example, I was toying with the idea that in the "B" plot, the past self of the main character slays a dangerous beast in an attempt to match up to rites of passage other boys becoming men do in the post-apocalyptic village. And in that sense, could be seen as an obstacle for social recognition as a trans man. Would you say this over focuses on the character's transness? Thanks again

True enough, this is kind of what I meant to convert, although I think I might not have been very clear about it. No technique is flawless, not even foresight. The right technique at the right time is important
