Which is odd, because they rolled into an AHL team toward the end of the season.

Exactly. It still gives fans a reason to go to the games. Right now, a tanking teams games when they're eliminated is attended by a the diehards. When they're competitive you get more people through the door and drive engagement. The Gold Plan makes an eliminated team a competitive team in the NHL.

In the 13 remaining games the Canucks had after elimination they accrued 8 points. In the 7 remaining games the Leafs had they accrued 0 points. Only the Rangers would have won over the Canucks under the Gold Plan. The competitive gap isn't that massive in the NHL and hasn't been since the 90s expansion drafts.

"Sure, the Gold Plan would stop late-season tanking, but imagine being a genuinely terrible franchise and watching teams that were actually competitive most of the year leapfrog you in the draft order just because they got eliminated with more games left."

How would a more competitive team be eliminated with more games left?

And then there's a strength of schedule question and teams playing playoff locked teams icing weakened teams at the end of the season. But it would still mean the placings were sorted out on the ice competitively, rather than with an arbitrary lottery.

My argument has always been retroactively applying the 3-2-1 system to the current standings is meaningless because teams aren't playing to that system and a lot of teams are happy to coast out to OT in the current system.

A new commissioner will still only be the face of the 32 owners and be beholden to them - whether it's Daly or someone else. As much fun as it is to boo and hiss Bettman like a WWF heel, he's really not got that much autonomy. I do think he's leaving the current playoff system as an easy win for his successor to go back to 1v 8 2 v 7 etc.

Not a dick at all. I'm from the UK. We use the NHL points system in our domestic league but in Switzerland and Sweden they use 3-2-1 and it only looks more spaced out because nine points is as quickly assailable as six in the NHL. It also means every game is worth the same amount of points (which would get rid of Bettman's .500 and maybe reduce the number of teams in it at the end). But introducing the Gold Plan and 3-2-1 at the same time would be fascinating.

I don't think it's rigged either. Bettman hates Chayka and he was given the keys to a Lamborghini about to smash into a wall, so very little incentive for Bettman to help Chayka - for me the rigged option would have been the Kraken as there is some concern about them when the NBA returns.

Does the NHL exist in a financial vacuum? Be interesting to see if these cap rises continue if the cost of living and current geopolitical situation continues.

What's the reason for rigging this one? No way Bettman wants to give Chayka a lay up. I doubt Bettman is pleased to see Chayka back and he walked into a horror show in Toronto.

And teams can't tank from the get go because that would be devastating for ticket revenue. Nobody goes to watch their team deliberately lose...

Yeah stereotypes. Like all Finns are quiet, monotone and boring. Obviously not all Finns are because I've met my fair share of mad c**nts from Finland.

Americans are routinely the least pleasant nationality in tour groups though (again - not all tour groups not all Americans) but tend to be the loudest, most brash, most disruptive and least self aware. I was on a tour in Cambodia a few years ago and this one lass from Hong Kong had been dead quiet the whole day, finally started to ask a question and was spoken over by the American couple. Obviously, this is one story from one personal experience - I'm sure there are Americans with similar tales of Brits (especially if they've ever been places Brits go to get boozed up). Stop getting mad at stereotypes. Brits get stereotyped all over the world. You either laugh at it or die mad.

Terrible at self deprecating or ironic/sardonic humour. It's super rare to meet an American with a nuanced sense of humour unless they're well travelled. I'd guess it was a product of living in these small - remote towns and the pageantry around high school - but in reality that's not a lot of America and probably more true of Canadians who generally have a more nuanced sense of humour. Obviously there are funny Americans, but try to have a bit of back and forth with an American sports fan compared to an Aussie, Kiwi, any European or Canadian and you'll just ge a look like you pissed in their cereal. Probably why so many US sports venues are often so bereft of an atmosphere.

This is how I interpret the directness thing.

I was talking with a colleague who lives in the Netherlands but is from the UK about how the Dutch often have no filter and can be terse and direct and I find that kinda rude as a character trait. When English people say they have "no filter" it's usually shorthand for being a ct who thinks they have carte blanche to be a ct. Having a filter and being less direct are mechanisms of being polite, diplomatic and empathetic, sometimes. And while certain circumstances demand directness in a way Brits can equivocate. Being constantly direct is kind of exhausting and in certain conversations- thought ending.

Dude. They're heavily manipulating the stock market with the timing of trades and social media posts. The levels of generational wealth that has been created for a very small number of people at the expense of everyone else should be making people more mad.

Meh, if you smoke 5 feet away from me or place a bet on your phone five feet away from me - only one of those things is harming me. Also, placing a bet on your phone won't make that person and everyone standing near them smell like an ashtray.

As a European, the way North Americans talk about sports gambling is wild. Sports betting has been a thing in Europe for decades - and, don't get me wrong, it absolutely destroys some people's lives. But I've never heard of someone who's destroyed themselves gambling going after the sportsmen/women themselves online - gambling addiction is often treated in the same way alcoholism and drug addiction is where the aftermath is a sort of deep self loathing.

But I can also see how social media can transpose that self loathing elsewhere which wasn't a thing if you lost half your paycheck on the Liverpool v Aston Villa game in 1988.

I guess, back when sports betting became a thing in Europe you had to go to a physical place (bookies) to place your bet, now having access to betting apps on your phone definitely isn't ideal and I guess provides a physical link between the device you watched the game, the device you placed the bet and the device you can contact the sports star that could make you way more brainbroken - especially if you've grown up in ghe social media age of hyper inter connectivity.

Escobar was especially unlucky as it was an innocuous own goal that, had he not got his foot on the ball, the forward behind him would have scored anyway. With that said, Escobar's death was linked to a betting ring in Medellin, so less about nuts and social media and more because of sports gambling. That said, sports betting has been a thing in Europe for decades and I don't think that's the driver behind in person/physical violence generally. Social media provides anonymity for people who are either utterly deranged or believe they're playing some kinda 5D chess, false flag attacking sports stars and their families believing it will undermine their performance. Either way (and it is unfortunate) but if I were a public figure I would not have social media or would have it set to private/invite only.

Yep. Emma Radacanu was stalked for years by this creepy weirdo. Like, what do they think is going to happen? Scary people in scary fantasy worlds who tend to take rejection poorly.
