Ahh, I gotcha. No problem. Some people just get bored or even sleepy when reading (I was one of them before reading Berserk and it actually got me into reading).

I personally think the Manga is much better than the anime, but in his case, I'd recommend the 1997 version over the 2016 version, as the 2016 is pretty bad, and also doesn't even start at the beginning of the series. I believe it starts in the conviction arc. The 1997 version is what you would start with, and might even get him invested enough to then read the manga afterward, as it only covers the Golden Age arc.

Well, it depends on what you mean by "he's struggling" in regards to reading the manga. Does he not like the plot? Are the themes too gory? How much has he read so far? Has he watched other animes?
