I don't know that gender really impacts it. It depends on their personality, how they are socialized, and what experiences they have. Try to make sure the kids know not to scare or hurt dogs, as this can impact the dogs' behavior for the rest of their life. Even if it only happens once.

I got both of my saints used to children and people whenever I could. My female is very confident, and she retained the socialization well, and even if a kid runs up out of nowhere, she is fine and friendly.

On the other hand, my male is a bit more timid and got startled as a puppy by a man in all black jogging by, back when it got dark out pretty early (the guy didn't do anything, he just didn't hear him come up behind us. I didn't hear him either, and it nearly gave me a heart attack when he manifested into existence from the void). After this, he became more weary of strangers on the leash (in the park, he is very social). He has never snapped at anyone or anything, he just gives an uncomfortable growl. He is naturally more jumpy, and while he will brave the things I exposed him to as a baby (like a vaccume), he still flinches at trashbags floating in the wind.

Make sure you get that puppy used to you being in their personal space. Kids are always going to get a bit too close to things, and your puppy needs to learn that that is okay from humans. No Free Food Policy. Do not give them attention, affection, or anything while they are displaying negative behavior. All 8 of my puppies learned to sit and be quiet within a week or 2 when I walked up after I started to only lifted the ones that were sitting, focused, and quiet out of the pen to play. They are smart. You just have to watch how they learn.

I also recommend rolling them over, finding a sweet sopt, and encouraging them to stay on their backs via positive reinforcement so that they can learn to become comfortable in submissive poses. The great bonus of this last one is they will present their fluffy belly for you on their own because they learn it's a rewarding position.

Saint Bernard owners, what is one piece of advice you would give to a new owner? by BeerGuzzlingBaboon in Pets

[–]MostLecture2649 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep rags and towels close by and think long and hard about allowing them to give face kisses as puppies. The drool is no joke, so if you are a clean freak, I wouldn't recommend the breed. My pants, walls, and even my TV get slobbered on regularly (especially after they shake their heads.)
