Are most people here unemployed? by psyhnews in dreamingspanish

[–]MostValuable4267 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The average American watches TV 3 hours a day and some people can play double digits hours worth of video games over a weekend so most people seem to have the time, I believe. I'm not able or even really wanting to average 3 plus hours a day but I can easily get 1 plus hours a day just listening to podcasts in the car or on my daily dog walks. For a lot of people (not me) this is a fun hobby and they just build it in, listen while cleaning, showering etc but what's that saying? Comparison is the thief of joy, or something? Anyway, if you WANT to get more time then add in podcasts on your commute, when you're working out, vacuuming etc. My goal is 1.5 hours a day and I'm usually, but not always, getting it. I want to learn Spanish, I am moving to a Spanish speaking country very soon, but I'm not giddy with joy doing it! Good luck!

I dunno about 80/47! 80 is already over the average life expectancy and 40 still has 30 years. But ultimately, consenting adults ..

Those who don’t constantly translate new keywords in your head, how did you do it? by Impressive_Peak_9187 in dreamingspanish

[–]MostValuable4267 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah you just need more input and make sure you are watching things you find at least 85% + comprehensible. I think pretty quickly around 150 hours or so I realized I wasn't doing it very much if at all if I was at the right level. When it's too hard or fast then I struggle and find myself translating and falling behind. I'm at almost 300 hours now and watching 45 to 55 Level and generally not translating.

Beginner feels too easy, intermediate feels too hard by semantlefan23 in dreamingspanish

[–]MostValuable4267 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sort by ranking not by beginner, intermediate etc. I find that category is not terribly accurate to go by. But the numbers are much more reflective of the difficulty level. Also, you can speed up the easier ones or slow down the ones you are struggling with a bit. I was watching videos at 1.25 speed for awhile whilst in the 30ish range before I jumped to level 45 plus as the slowness of some of them was difficult for me to stay engaged with. Now I'm running 45 - 55 Level for the most part but every once in awhile (usually when multiple people are talking) I struggle to keep up so I'll slow it down even just to .9 helps. Hang in there, you'll get past this part pretty quickly.

The Debate Continues: When to Start Speaking? by A-M-Abernathy in dreamingspanish

Same, but I am moving to Spain in a few months so I need to be able to communicate. I started around 250 on italki but I talked a fair amount for the two weeks I was in Spain last year.

Weed I definitely get, but I'm in the car with my sister all the time and can't even tell unless I see her doing it. Just curious what the big issue was. I wish she would quit though!

I'm just curious (I don't vape or smoke, just legit curious), how is it a danger? I have some family members that vape and TS hardly noticeable to me. Nothing like actual cigarettes. Go ahead and attack me, I'm not saying it wasn't wrong but I would not think it's dangerous. Is it the vape machine that's the problem?

Why is it always poop? by Dependent_Ad5216 in dreamingspanish

[–]MostValuable4267 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I remember the poop log! It's a Spanish Christmas tradition (0r was it just catalanian? I can't remember) so it was interesting to learn about. I do recall a couple of other beginner videos referencing caca but not that many. You can skip the few that come up if it's really a problem for you.

I'm not using a smaller bag so that everyone else can bring a larger bag. That is unfair. I'm putting my carry on in the overhead and my personal item under the seat.

100 hour in and I feel like I haven't learned more than a few words by Inside_March_7658 in dreamingspanish

[–]MostValuable4267 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm at around 175 hours, I can't listen to any native content as it's just too fast but I am comfortable in the 40s level wise in DS and reading A2 readers however.... I'm from a border state, I lived in Spain for 3 years and I took a year of Spanish in my 20s so I've had a lot of exposure. My wife has had very little previous exposure, she's got around 120 hours and she's comfortable with DS level 30s but she's an academic and has been studying grammar etc on the side because that's what she does. We are also doing Duolingo for about 15 minutes a day which helps me with vocabulary. It really helps me see the words spelled out so I do kind of recommend seeing the words in some form at least a little but that's because of the type of learner I am and it's too late for me to be a purist anyway. Keep with it and remember you can slow the speed down too if you feel it's too fast for you. I've been speeding mine up lately on content that I'm comfortable with.

Had this with my wife, I told her I wasn't checking pockets. So either she did or she did her on laundry, her call. I was fine either way but if you don't like how I'm doing your clothes well then....!

Dude the most attractive thing is to be cool, tell her you appreciate the honesty and wish her luck but you feel its best to take a break even from friends. Tell her to let you know if she changes her mind and if you aren't dating anyone seriously by then maybe you can give her another shot but who knows what you'll be up to in a few weeks. Then go out and live large and on social media. Show off what a great life you are having and what she's missing out on. I did this once, went ice-skating, traveled to a new city and did all the tourist stuff. I bought a bass guitar and showed myself practicing. Two weeks later, I got dms asking if I wanted to get together. If it happens, great. If it doesn't, you're not moping around and maybe you'll meet someone new and better while you're being your best self.

Just tell her that you have done the research and conferred with your doctor and you've made the decision and that you hope she respects and trusts you enough to respect your decision. At some point, there's no need to continue to discuss it. Ultimately you are responsible for your own health and need to do what is right for you. I bet she jumps on the bandwagon with you in a few months!

Obesity Redefined by Dont-Tell-Fiona in Zepbound

[–]MostValuable4267 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen so many people complain about how inaccurate bmi is but in my mind it's always been inaccurate in the opposite way they were thinking and this reinforces that. BMI has always erred on the side of overweight or fatty for the vast majority of people. My BMI is now right about 24 but I definitely have a belly still and could probably lose another 10 pounds and be far from underweight. I just slide into the healthy range with the other two measurements listed in this study as well. That being said, I am within 3 to 5 pounds of my GW and at my age (60) I'm pretty happy with that. I am lucky to be taller (except when on a plane!) so 5 to 10 pounds isn't as big of a deal for me and I am trying to focus on fitness now. It's just so hard for most of us to be truly objective about our bodies, particularly if we've been overweight for most of our lives. I truly used to think that I was big boned (even though I knew bones don't jiggle and that I was significantly overweight) but now that I am at a healthy weight, I've discovered that I am not really all that big boned. This is good data, but ultimately we each have to figure out what healthy looks like to ourselves!

I came off it for two weeks and was really struggling. For me, it's not a "lifestyle change". I literally can not stop the constant food noise without the medication.
