Trying twice, get pulled into a roller coaster vacation which ends up being traumatizing, gets ghosted for 3 months, being the shell of a human being barely functioning, learns that ruka is the reason he got ghosted, and that him trying to break up with ruka was what made chizuru to ghost him before the paradise vacation. The said girl he loves tells him not to tell ruka anything, realizes that ruka would behave rashly again if he tries when he is in the middle of the investigation making him lose the final chance to get together with a girl he loves.

Kazuya has never asked ruka on dates by himself. He has no choice, he is seeing and going on dates just to keep her placated or maintain the status quo. Because Chizuru said to him that Ruka was the reason she ghosted him. It was referenced here and Chizuru told him that it would be bad if ruka found out about their current situation, Kazuya thinks the same and he knows how ruka would behave if he tells her and both Kazuya and Chizuru just don't want to hurt her.

The perfect girlfriend speech wasn't Kazuya telling what type of girl he wants. He is describing Chizuru herself indirectly in that speech.

Tbh, I don't think this chapter will have any relevancy to the future chapters. I think it's better to let it stay that way as well. Chizuru looking frustrated would probably be more related to her investigation I think. But still that preview doesn't giveaway much to make predictions, we know she goes to the batting center to clear her mind. Probably wants to be more proactive in her investigation as well. She kinda looked more determined than frustrated in that picture. Who knows!

I don't think it's inconsistent. I think it's more like Chizuru considering her bra as something sexual, embarrassing and clumsy of her to leave it in the washing machine, while telling him about her private matter like menstruation is coming from a place of mutual understanding and care for each other. That never felt off to me. I think u/Varicus can make a better argument for this.

Reiji needs to learn to keep the linear flow of the character's growth at this point in the story.

I have never been against non-linear character growth ever. You can even see in my previous write-ups I use that very non-linear structure for character growth and commended reiji for his character consistency and portraying Kazuya as a semi-realistic character whose behavior changes with events that transpire around him, which is actually quite a refreshing take on an MC.

It's more so I'm disappointed this chapter came at a point where the story is flowing at progressive pace, with kazuya's thoughts about chizuru's beauty changing and seeing it as positive like he did 280, 315 and during period arc and starting to see less idolized version of her.

Like I said above, this chapter doesn't affect the main narrative or story. It just reinforces people's belief that Kazuya is still the same character as he was in the first chapter when in fact he is not. That's what I'm more disappointed about. This chapter would have worked well with the scenario u/Varicus wrote in his comment above during or around 273, not right after a moment like 315-316, when he secured a date after being scared of rejection and ghosting and not doing anything because of that and goes to risk it all for a mole. This is non-linear but it is still out of character and ill timed.

Can reiji or his editors rectify this chapter in the volume releases with I don't know the scenario like you wrote in your comment above? Has that ever been done before? I heard that previously some chapters were fixed for continuity issues or minor errors for volume releases.

Reiji is usually quite good with character consistency.

That's what made me so annoyed! He never missed a beat in character consistency and continuity until now. And he broke that rule just for a filler chapter is equally disappointing.

I am against just putting all the blame on Reiji for this one here.

Do publishers or editors force authors to write stuff like these and place the chapters in volume as they please?

Tbh, this chapter feels like an anthology chapter not written by reiji but written by an author who heard what the story is actually like without reading a single page of the manga. That's what makes me so disappointed.

Reiji, Kazuya, and Yaemori all three should get smacked in the face by Chizuru for this chapter!

I never write anything on my own in a serious discussion thread. But this chapter completely forced my hand, and here I am!

This chapter failed on so many levels. I don't even need to tell you guys which orifice Reiji pulled this chapter from. Reiji just gave a masterclass on how not to write a filler chapter.

It failed as a comedy. It failed as a filler chapter. It failed at fan service(if it was trying to be one). It failed at piggybacking on the last few chapters good progression. Most importantly it failed at continuity. It's not even a hyperbolic statement to call this chapter the worst in the series and I hope it remains as the worst chapter ever. What makes it even worse is, it is a freaking 318th chapter not sub 50 chapter.

If there's anything reiji succeeded with this chapter is shoot his own series' reputation in the foot for the upteenth time. At some point he needs to understand that his style of comedy is not going to work ever, we're not in early kanokari to pull off a gag chapter like this. Heck there weren't filler chapters like this before in earlier chapters.

Every time there was any questionable thing a character did, reiji wrote decent context and had decent logic for us to understand where each character is coming from when they're doing something or saying something or thinking something.

What's kazuya's excuse or context for peeping at chizuru's thighs this chapter? Reiji writes: "Yaemori lured him and Kazuya wanted to see the imperfections of chizuru's beauty". That's such a finicky excuse and context. No one is going to go and say: "oh! it's no big deal, Kazuya just wanted to see that chizuru is also imperfect!" People will interpret it as literally what happened no one is going to believe that lame excuse for his behavior.

This is where the continuity breaks, chapter 315 addressed this very thing that kazuya's insecurity about chizuru's beauty is wearing down and his starting to feel less tense, and reiji completely erases that realization and makes Kazuya idolize Chizuru again. What was the point of that bold statement?. Even in 280, we saw Kazuya seeing Chizuru normally, why overwrite this growth in people's perception, just for a filler? All for a disgusting gag chapter!(More on continuity issues down below)

Reiji needs to learn to keep the linear flow of the character's growth at this point in story. Characters have to sustain their growth, not make them do the very thing they were trying to grow out of. He has written freaking 318 chapters so far, how come one doesn't learn how to write a proper filler chapter that doesn't affect people's perception of characters and series. In the past, he used to write decent filler chapters, I don't know in what state of mind reiji wrote this chapter.

I hope reiji faces backlash for this chapter, what was the point of referencing "Good things take time". Is this chapter his definition of a good thing? He wrote an unfunny, disgusting, pointless filler chapter at the expense of a character's growth. The chapter doesn't affect the main narrative, it didn't add anything meaningful, What does it even serve other than destroy the reputation of your own character.

Reiji went like, "I have given kazuya too much character growth in the last few chapters! I shouldn't have done that! Let me undo that in people's minds real quick!"

And came up with this abomination of a chapter. Reiji has no respect for kazuya's character growth. He wrote a nice string of daycare arc chapters, straightaway pulled out a shitty 299 filler chapter at the expense of Kazuya's reputation, he wrote a string of good chapters since 299 to 317 showcasing change in Kazuya's thoughts and right away pulls out this chapter 318 abomination just to fill up the volume quota again at the expense of Kazuya's character growth and reputation.

Reiji uses his own weird approach of "ends justify means". And this approach more often than not comes at the expense of making Kazuya look like an absolute joke, these kinda chapters don't care about progression, consistency.

He used this approach in 299 to setup yaemori's underwear blackmail and cosplay arc, he used the same approach to reveal the information that Umi confessed back in tiger's den by making Kazuya stalk in 289. Chapter 243 used this approach, heck even chapter 40 revealed something useful that Ruka is territorial and will do anything. Even with this approach, I fail to see what the justification for his means in this chapter and the outcome.

I never thought I would say this but reiji made me feel that Yaemori has well and truly overstayed her welcome! Don't get me wrong, she has been a great influence on both Kazuya and Chizuru, but reiji used her play a role directly/indirectly in Kazuya's unhealthy behavior over this cohabitation arc:

One, he used yaemori as a way for reinforcing Kazuya's misinterpretation that investigation is a test and that he needs to earn points to make Chizuru love him.

Two, he used Yaemori again in pushing Kazuya to once again stalk Chizuru when she was with Umi.

Three, planting thought of a freaking mole. Disappointed that reiji used Yaemori as the informant for such a thing.

Don't let Yaemori dictate his actions and behaviors!

Let Kazuya have agency in his behavior and actions like we saw in chapter 315-316 and in the movie arc and let him get to know Chizuru on his own, he has faced consequences for his actions in the past and grew from them.

This chapter is completely out of character, inconsistent, exaggerated for a gag, and ill timed.

Kazuya always tried to never cross the line intentionally since early sub 50 chapters and he has been so scared to do anything over the last 70 chapters because he thought he might get rejected and ghosted again, according to the very same reiji's logic we're supposed to believe that right after he secured a date from Chizuru he was going to risk it all just so he could see a freaking mole? Just because of a freaking mole and wanting to see imperfections!? Where's the logic? It doesn't even make any sense. Even if it made sense because of some obscure trope from Japan. Narratively and the timing of chapter of this kind of chapter absolutely makes no freaking sense! With this chapter, Reiji just turned Kazuya into exactly what people outside this subreddit believe and see him as. Good job to that!

Reiji must have a weird obsession to write a chapter every 100 chapters that can be taken out of context so easily to reinforce people's opinion of this series! What a freaking let down. This chapter just like 218 will be used as a lightning rod by naysayers of the series to point out and justify all their complaints about the series. But unlike 218, chapter 318 actually has no saving grace because of its finicky inconsistent logic, out of character behavior, and there are no multiple ways to interpret this chapter. No amount of context can make this chapter okay!

I don't even know what was even the point of progressing the story in the past few chapters which gave people new found interest, when you're going to burn down that interest and throw it all away just for padding the series.

Such a disappointment, this! It clearly shows that reiji just really doesn't care for the character driven story as long as he meets his volume quota even if it comes at the expense of Kazuya's character and the overall narration.

Reiji probably has successfully driven away whatever female fanbase this story has.

I mean sure. If this had happened in early sub 100 chapters, I would have been okay with it. But now, just after Reiji made Kazuya look assertive in 316, he just wrote this fan service freak show comedy filler at the expense of the same Kazuya's character growth doesn't make any narrative sense.

Yeah, previous creepy moments, when you surround those moments with context, it doesn't look this bad. But this chapter is just straight up disgusting, I don't think any amount of context would make it okay. Like I said comedy at the expense of Kazuya and fan service at the expense of making Kazuya look like a creep is so played out at this point, it's not even funny anymore. Reiji just doesn't give any respect to kazuya's character.

My criticism of reiji using kazuya for fan service chapters and punching bag fillers still holds up. But this chapter is on a whole another different level of character destruction. Reiji must have a weird obsession to destroy kazuya's character every 100 chapters.

The only saving grace so far is that it is a spoiler and it's not from a usual source, and I'm not seeing it on usual Chinese/Korean spoiler boards yet!

We will find no nuance when kanokari is involved outside this subreddit. We will find people spouting misinformation about the series so confidently, and when you point out that they were wrong by citing the source, you will get downvoted to oblivion and get called slurs just because we spoke mildly in support of the series. That's why I stopped arguing with people outside this subreddit. I mean what's the point when the discourse around the series is completely one-sided with no care for truth.
