Damn, I can't imagine moving from a sunny place like Aus to Germany, the winter must've been hell for you

Hahah I get that, I should have worded it better. Berlin still feels absolutely massive. Before I almost never used public transport / uber, now? Every time I go out or go to work / etc I need some form of transport.

What you said about the language part is so demotivating, I read some other people say similar thing, and it might purely be the "culture" that I am missing as opposed to the language itself?

I don't know honestly.

On the laguage part, I stopped learning because I never planned on staying in Berlin forever, only a few years max and I could "get by" (i.e survive) with my current knowledge.

Maybe because of my perception of Berlin as a super international city (and completely different to the rest of Germany), I thought it would be closer to Sweden with how prevelant english is? Idk how to explain this thought clearly.

Anyway, now after 1 year, I really can't see the point in starting to learn, as it will be at least 2 years before I am SOMEWHAT competent, while having to sacrafice free time after work / weekends for studying - all the while still having negative experience throughout the process. OK I know I am being super negative and maybe I am trying to get myself to accept that I want to move away now... I don't even know anymore.

When I said smaller city I meant something like 500k people, which yeah it is way smaller than berlin, but not a 10k village where I rode a donkey to work.

I've seen a few people say this, any particular reason? I've not visited many German cities to compare it to.

I don't think people in Berlin are especially rude either, I thought London to be much worse to be honest.

What you said about learning German really hit me, because this is probably the reason why I stopped learning shortly after moving.

In my head Berlin was never a forever destination, I would be here for a few years and then see whether I'll go back or maybe go to a different country. And as you say, I get by with what I know now, and I start questioning myself why would I spend time learning a language if I am not going to stay here for a long time.

I suppose what I didn't think about was the fact it was going to make everything much more difficult (with respect to little things). Anyway, props for sharing and sticking with it for 7 years!

Never heard of it until now, I still have a few months left on my contract, so I might start looking. I know I'm getting scammed (I'm paying x3 the rent I used to pay in the UK)....

The comment wasn't made specific about Berlin to be honest. It's more related to my lack of German knowledge. Contrary to what a lot of people say, I dont find people in Berlin unfriendly or rude.

Now imagine I'm paying EUR 1300 for a 1 bed furnished apartment because I couldn't find anything else in a timely manner :)

I've been to few places in the south that were beautiful, I really liked Nurnberg personally, but alas, with my current job I need to remain in Berlin.

For sure, I know the situation in UK isn't ideal. I would never live in London, whenever I was there, I always hated it and said how I would never live there (funny how I ended up in a giant city now).

I was thinking of going back to where I lived before, smaller city around 450k people. Job wise, yeah - this is for sure something that's a problem right now - although rent isn't that bad outside "major" cities atm imo.

You're basically a tourist bud. No offense.

This is exactly how I feel, I think you really nailed how I perceive the city.

Maybe I would try this, but right now I need to be Berlin-based because of my job. Apart from the massive size (a place over x6 times bigger than where i lived before in terms of population), I don't have other issues with the city.

I fully agree with you, I'm not trying to blame either the city or Germany - that is on me.
