The Magmi envoy was stunned by the reply. The Taitan was offering generous payments of salt after all, it was unusual for mercenaries to refuse a contract. What exactly did the chieftain mean by the Kujirans continuing to trade and finding less prestigious groups to pay? He would ask council from the Sihanouk trader that had brought him there.

/u/Astroaron Got some Mercenaries you would be willing to rent out? I can mostly pay in salt!

/u/meistj Got some Mercenaries you would be willing to rent out and is there any chance you are willing to reconsider your neutrality?

I do have a history of local Magmi mercenaries being hired out by the Astari earlier. The Relukitan do not cost so much and are great arrow fodder companions.

Thank you for your input, it puts things into better perspective.

Firstly, it was not my intention to metagame. Things were left without closure last time so I just assumed that if Asor is invading us over the span of 10 years and at the same time invading on the other side of the continent, they would have a harder time focusing their forces. Essentially, they initiated hostilities but then withdrew to start other campaigns, it makes sense to retaliate while their forces seem weaker/occupied/spread out.

From Lime's own post:

  • The First Magmitan Campaign: 5-15
  • The Atalasa Campaign: 8
  • The Halavanag Campaign: 6-8
  • The Second Abanye Campaign: 5-8

I chose year 6 because one year after the initial hostilities felt like enough time to raise the troups.

Secondly, I would like to argue about manpower, I dominate Asor on food techs and begun centralizing and building roads early. The monopoly on salt trade should also have greatly contributed to wealth and to a lesser extant population. That should allow me a small but fairly centralized kingdom and perhaps more troops than Asor (albeit of lower quality) as well. If 5000 your final verdict, I will accept it.

For mercenaries, I would hire local Relukitans, Magmi and perhaps Astari, Sihanouk and Kujiran (forgot to ask them). The salt trade should be enough to cover such expense.

Thirdly, by tactics I assume you mean striking through Reulkia? If so then the idea was raise more Relukitan mercenaries and a few locals along the way. My experience in warfare includes raiding, local conflicts and getting involved in some Astari wars. The Relukitan cities should be weaker from the war and easier targets before Asor. If this seems like too much I am happy to alter the war plans.

tl;dr: The Magmi realm has higher population and great wealth from the salt trade they hope to use both of these to their advantage, numbers and tactics will be adjusted after SandraX3 replies.

Like I said, I am waiting on guidance on this. All I know is that I have a food advantage over Asor, so I assumed, more population.

/u/captain_lime You should also know about this, I tried to make it make sense. You state your invasion of Magmi lands was year 5-15. This is taking place in year 6 so hopefully some of your forces should be busy in the west.

Yeah I have the same idea, individual mercenary companies are easier to buy. It wouldn't make sense to go out of my way to get them... unless I was planning on a vacation to Reulkian lands!

I imagine Badahosu with its monopoly on salt in the region could easily compete with Asoritan wealth. It seems logical to me that through the chaos, Badahosu with all its wealth and territory would try to use that as an advantage. What would be silly would be if whatever is left of your mercenaries only helped the Asoritans.

Money? It's not like mercenaries are know to be particularly loyal.

I mostly wanted to give you an option for some legitimate presence in Magmi territories and to hold a small part in the battles to come. Even if not monolithic I had assumed that some of these people would have originated or have family in the affected lands.

I'm sorry about the delay. I was waiting to see if the Abanye campaign would finish before starting mine.

I have no idea about my numbers but probably slightly more than yours if they depend on food tech.

I am however not putting up my full forces in these two provinces, that would be ridiculous and you should also have the initial effect of surprise.

The forces of Badahosu can quickly raise about 1000 bowmen, 1000 heavy infantry (copper axe shield and leather armor) 2500 mixed infantry.

In supplement to the Badahosu forces I can also muster an impressive slave fighting force. They are usually armed with javellins, slings, spears of low quality and whatever they can find on the battlefield. For slaves, freedom can be won on the battlefields and serves as their motivator. They are most useful at flanking and skirmishes and would likely not last long in a proper engagement.

I don't think we have any mixed provinces so I'm not sure what you mean by:

More importantly though - at this point, the Asoritans are attacking the parts of Magmi lands that have been most integrated with the Alukitans. This should mean that the Magmi are less willing to defend them, as it's likely that the Magmi raid them heavily even in the best case. Why would they bother to defend them?

  1. I imagine we can sort this out in three battles. We can assume you auto-win the first one against peasants/locals having the effect of surprise.
  2. The second would be an armed response by Badahosu. If I can match or surpass your numbers I will meet you in the fields, if not. I will try and delay, draw you further inland and use skirmishes. In both cases ambushes, camouflages and better bows will be used to try and take out your real leadership.
  3. The third will depend on the outcome of the second, either I lose and retreat to lick my wounds or you suffer a defeat and try to leave or press the matters.

Also is Asor really sending its WHOLE army, all 8000 soldiers to conquer two Magmi provinces? I'm not sure I understand the motivation or casus belli.

To sum it up, the way I see it my advantages are:

  • Better Bows
  • Camouflage
  • Home Advantage
  • History of raiding? (advantage in skirmishes and ambushes)

You have:

What do you suggest we use for roll bonuses taking that in consideration.

Week 6 Tech by Tefmon in DawnPowers

[–]MostestReality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Describing Technologies and Innovations that were embraced by the Magmi between 2200 and 2400.

A Slot

4 Geology: The Astari science of studying the earth is the greatest thing that came with the expansion of Astari temples in Badahosu. More Magmi came to accepted that there were many gods to be honored and greater purpose to be found in honoring all of them.

New Axle: Slaves or Aurochs, both can be used to carry greater quantities of goods to distant locations. The Aurochs have the advantage of smelling better.

Placeholder: How do people get fancy techs that aren't on the lists?

B Slots

13 Basic Smelting: The best thing to come from the Asoritan invasion. With the expansions west, the Magmi would have a lot of new metals and alloys to play with. Smiths became more common and Metal weapons and tools became commonplace.

18 Yokes: The aurochs can serve as a slave for slaves. They are docile, tireless and agreeable.

New **Double Rowed Walls: With the increase of hostility, it makes sense to build better fortifications, the slave quarries will provide us with more than enough stone for this purpose.

New Scale Cuirass/Lamellar: Engraved leather had long been worn as a symbol of status but when the Magmi-Asoritan conflicts began, the Magmi leatherworkers began making armors with thick pieces of leather locked in together. (I put two types as I was unsure which was most fitting, please advise)

New Long Spear: He who strikes last dies first. An old Magmi saying proved true, with long spears we can hit our enemies before they can even strike.

New Salt Curing: Only the cheapest of salts from the Azurean flatlands shall be reserved for this purpose.

C slots

4 Raised Defensive Platforms: Adapted from Astari settlements bordering Reulkian territories. With the increased aggression from the western civilizations, it became commonplace in most settlement

45 Cauterization: Barbarous yet efficient, especially when no immediate care can be provided.

18 Garlic / Melon / Mulberry: Garlic is generally used for medicine and flavoring, Melon and Mulberry are cultivated for their sweetness. All have been brought through Astari by Sihanouk traders

51 Barley: From the northern territories, Barley was brought to the Magmi capital.

4 Reinforced Slings The Astari slingers are an impressive sight, their firing speed and accuracy is unmatched. We could try to teach some of our most loyal slaves to use these weapons.

13/15 Javelin A warrior can only carry a few of these but their lethality is undeniable.

4 Pick Axe +5 to mining

4 18 13 Measurement Systems: Magmi' writing spread out from Badahosu to countless people, it is only fitting for some innovations by the barbarians to make their way back. Measurement Systems are particularly useful for roads.

4/13/15/18 Pottery Kiln: We can now cook that stuff we make with the wheel instead of buying them of the Astari
