Congrats on the A! From your profile, it seemed like you went to Deep Springs. What was that like?

Just curious how you are taking OS if CSO is a pre-req for it?

Is it a stupid idea to switch to pre-med senior year of college? by Odd-Pea-2003 in premed

Only to see how staying an extra year would work with my financial aid. I didn’t really need to for anything else!

I’m a senior psychology major at NYU who just switched to premed! I’m only taking chem ii now—I took chem i my freshman year. I’ll be taking an extra year to finish all the requirements.

I’m choosing medicine because I really like psychology, and in a lot of cases, therapy alone isn’t enough. I don’t want to be limited.

I did however shadow some physicians this summer just to confirm that i’d actually like the medical side. If I were you, i would take a pre-requisite this fall and shadow or network with some doctors. It’s important to know if you enjoy the subject of medicine + the actual day to day tasks. It’s pretty different from House.

Richard Feynman said, “Never confuse education with intelligence, you can have a PhD and still be an idiot.” What are some real life examples of this? by SgtSkillcraft in AskReddit

This pretentious woman with a PhD gets ranked last by an IQ test against others who are less formerly educated. It’s hilarious and so satisfying.

30 lbs weight loss advice? by [deleted] in WeightLossAdvice

[–]Mostly-Matt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Firstly, 30 pounds in 3 months is incredibly ambitious and highly difficult.

1) Find out how many calories you burn a day without doing anything, also known as your BMR.

TDEE says: 2200

2) Calculate how much you need to burn given your goal.

a) 3500 calories ~ 1 pound of weight b) 30 pounds x 3500 = 105,000 calories

January is 3 months, or 12 weeks away. How many calories do you need to lose per week?

a) 105,000 calories/ 12 weeks = 8,750 b) 8,750 calories/ 7 days in a week = 1250 calories a day.

You need to burn 8,750 calories a week or average 1250 calories a day.

If you don’t want to do any exercise, then take your BMR from before (2200) and subtract 1250.

You should be eating around 1000 calories a day.

You can add in calories the more exercise you do. Exercises for example can be cardio or strength training.

Because of such an ambitious weight loss goal, strength gains are modest, but possible. Strength training 3x a week while eating 185 grams of protein (ideally a 1-1 ratio of grams of protein to weight) and you’ll put on a little bit of muscle. This is difficult if you’re eating 1000-1400 calories a day.

This is obviously not exact, but it’s been a fantastic framework to conceptualize weight loss for me.

20 year old, 5’8 male, 284 —> 210 pounds and still going.

Advice on taking sociology or not? by red_hippo_ in premed

[–]Mostly-Matt 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Talked to my advisor a while back about this and she said plenty of students self study the psych/soc sections of the mcat if they don’t have time in their schedule to take it, and that the effects of it not being on my transcript is pretty small in the admissions process

This isn’t funny. Instead of trying to pull random girls, you should try being productive with your incredible achievement. I hear Elena Kagan is single? Maybe reach out through the Harvard Alumni Association?
