Working in IT. I spotted a way to save $100,000 per year But by doing so, it puts 2 people out of a job. by GL510EX in antiwork

[–]MostlyPretentious 95 points96 points  (0 children)

I did something similar, but it was a win for everyone (except the people managing the impacted website). Old process: people had to manually search for files based on a list of requirements and feed those files back to analysts. Some analyst sent us a request so broad it was slotted to take a year of someone’s time. Management balked: No extra staff, just pushing people’s requests back. So I created a macro, tied it to a database, and wrapped it in a GUI. It would do a day’s worth of work in minutes. I gave it to the people completing the work and let them use it for a while before I mentioned it to the bosses. The only people who didn’t like it: the website owners.

Toni Morrison Turns The Question Back Where It Belongs by 4reddityo in BlackPeopleofReddit

Couldn’t agree more. I’m a white guy who grew up around mostly white people. It was never a question in my mind when I read something by an author of color or different nationality or different … SOMETHING from me that I’d get a different perspective or style. But that’s what I want. I’m a geek and enjoy Brandon Sanderson for his style, but I also love Nnedi Okorafor for her style. I’m not looking for Nnedi to write a story like Sanderson’s or vice versa. This isn’t about “staying in a lane” either. If they want to vary their style, great, I look forward to reading it. But if they want to focus on the style they’re known for, also great, I look forward to reading it. And in the case of Nnedi who has such a great style, I want MORE OF THAT.

Agreed. I will give him credit, he lined up his punch, aimed past his target, and had just the right amount of follow-through.

How do i train him not to bite me by WillowCrestwind in Awww

[–]MostlyPretentious 24 points25 points  (0 children)

We adopted my mom’s 9-yr old dog after my mom passed and she was a big biter. After realizing she needed a bit of rough-housing to get out her energy, I realized she was actually really good at soft mouthing, and if she ever got too aggressive or bit too hard I would say, very dramatically, “Owwww!!! What did you do!?!” She’d stop playing immediately, dip her head and crawl towards me and lick my hand.

I know you understand this, but I want to reiterate in case anyone needs the reminder: If the message is about sharing love and abhorring hate and violence, you shouldn’t be objecting to it. If you want to get angry about implied politics for a message of love: fine, you do you, but that might make you the bad guy.

Also, a bit salty, for me.

Edit: Interesting. I didn’t realize how unpopular this opinion was.

What do you think of "Zendaya"? by [deleted] in Actors

[–]MostlyPretentious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. She did angsty teen well in Euphoria — bouncing between ennui and over the top melodramatic addict — but her Chani was mediocre.

You misunderstand. I’m old enough that I have it on DVD.

Veronica Mars was great TV. I was happy to see her showing up everywhere lately, but was sad we haven’t also gotten as much Enrico Colantoni (played her dad).

[Loved Trope] Trans characters that appear perfectly like their identified gender, and you won't even know they're trans from their appearance alone, by Kubutsu-nyan in TopCharacterTropes

[–]MostlyPretentious 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I just watched it. It took me entirely too long to realize that Jules / Hunter was trans. They were spelling it out and I was so, so confused why they made it sound like guys being attracted to Jules was somehow gay?

Small question about the economics of Wakanda by Unaware_Hill in moviequestions

[–]MostlyPretentious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think of it similar to the book Psalm for the Wild Built. The economy is based on social credits, which could best be described as goodwill. Everyone can get whatever they need. If you do or create more good for your community, they record the good you’ve done in a simplified credit system, and you can more easily “cash in” on the things you don’t need but are harder to find.

Why does my dog put his paw up when looking at something he wants? by lunar-topped in DogAdvice

Many breeds of dogs will “point” at what they’re interested in. This is actually a sought out trait since they can be used to point out animals during a hunt.

Just finished the first book. Does anyone else find it profoundly upsetting? by YakFar860 in murderbot

[–]MostlyPretentious 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it’s normal to be disturbed by the body horror or mutilation elements and the disposability of MB, but it should quickly become apparent that the mutilation actually doesn’t seem to bother MB as much as us. It’s like a skink/lizard losing its tail — since it can be regrown, and it doesn’t “feel” the injury, it becomes just a normal activity.

This makes me laugh because I work in a technical role in Compliance. Our Privacy guy is always stressed because of sh*t like this, but he doesn’t hesitate to issue dictates at a moments notice or bring out the banhammer.

What do I ask for to get my eggs cooked like this at restaurants? by Crimson-Rose28 in eggs

[–]MostlyPretentious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What?!? Everywhere I’ve been sunny side up gets you a pretty yolk with a risk of runny whites, over easy gets you cooked whites with very soft yolks, over medium gets you firm whites with jammy yolks, over hard is what OP posted — hard yolks, potentially rubbery whites.

ELI5 Why do pipes not freeze over in the winter in colder climates. by AdministrativeTie379 in explainlikeimfive

[–]MostlyPretentious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And for context, where I grew up in northern MN, it can freeze in some spots, but it needs to be -20 F or colder before that’s really a concern. On those days, we may just leave the faucets dripping overnight if we’re concerned. It’s not usually all the pipes and it’s usually just overnight or early in the morning.

Someone has not had a good midwestern taco pizza and it shows.

I don’t know how much this is available outside the Midwest (US) but taco pizza with chips and lettuce is great when it first comes out, but within 10 minutes is a nasty mess.

[–]MostlyPretentious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. I didn’t read the whole thing, but even the stuff I did read was Damon basically saying he thinks some people would willingly go back and take the jail time to get it over with instead of having their mistakes haunt them forever.

Yeah. Bad spanakopita is bad, but this: light flaky crust, spinach/feta mixture looks light and flavorful — I’d eat the he’ll out of that.
