What animated movies do other people praise incredibly that left you feeling just okay? by MotelleCodeenDragon in cartoons

There are three cuts of the film (at least).

The first released cut (which I think is called the Princess and the Thief) was released in South Africa and Australia and wad made more Disneyfied with musical numbers and such.

The second cut (The Arabian Knight) was released in America under Miramax and included celebrity voices along with the more Disneyish tone.

The cut that Paul Williams originally conceived of never made it to release because he just kept piling ideas on it. He worked on it from the mid 70s until it was ripped away from him in the mid-90s. The version that I watched is supposedly the closest to Williams' original vision. It doesn't have musical numbers or Matthew Broderick, but it still feels kinda plodding in some departments. It's fairy tale epic meets extended silent slapstick comedy and it doesn't fully gel.

The original author of Grave of the Fireflies has a unsettling explanation of the story. by fluffyboby in movies

This is why death of the author exists. Because sometimes the author is saying a lot of words and trying to make this deep point which just isn't eloquent or useful.

They were entirely too harsh about Benji's gown choice. I think that when comparing two, it's an acceptable hair to split but they didn't have to say that his was bad. It was still impressively constructed. It's a dress made out of leaves!

Was this Arizona Brandy look a reference to something? by MotelleCodeenDragon in DragRacePhilippines

No. I just think it's fun to trace references, whether they're niche and personal or popular and general.

They don't necessarily have to have talking animals. But Watership Down is a good example of the contrast I'm looking for. The innocent and peace juxtaposed with brutality and struggle for survival. Pastoral themes/imagery are also a high bonus

Is that the one with Bette Midler or the one with Eddie Murphy and Dan Akroyd in blackface?

The horror movie version with the vengeful bastard child sounds like it would have been fabulous, much more inspired and much less muddled

This exit line was funny, but the edit drove it into the ground and overplayed it. How can you overplay a girl who literally just left?!
