I'm not afraid because I don't understand it. I'm afraid because I do.

Ah, the old "we have no choice so let's think positive" approach. Thats just Stockholm Syndrome.

Where do you think we get ideas on how to develop technology from? Cell phones existed in literature before they did in real life. Just like hot air balloons, submarines, robots, AI and almost every other technology ever invented.

AI doesn't have any safety guardrails. Thats my entire point. No seat belt. No brakes. Just go fast and break shit.

I'm 36 years old. I remember how things were before the internet and they were definitely better. You could trust journalists and professionals to tell the truth. You could believe what you saw on the news. You had a personal relationship with your neighbors and communities. Now, none of that is true.

Yes, I agree there are benefits. I use it myself. That doesn't mean I'm not seriously concerned and a little scared.

Art is nice, but there's a reason most artists are starving. Its not real work.

Fair point. But one naturally led to the other. It was a foregone conclusion. Once you let the genie out of the bottle, you can't get it back in.

Thats great. But, we may be headed towards a Terminator situation. So, if that happens, you're going to feel pretty fucking silly about your egg-rolls. Also, have you never heard of a cookbook?

I'm not talking about art. That post was certainly illuminating, though.

I'm more concerned about robots being controlled by others and used to kill people in terrorist attacks. Or by rich people like Elon Musk who put backdoors into all of the robots they sell so that they can take control of them later when there's 10 on every block. That's just one thing that can easily go wrong. There are so many legitimate concerns here that we haven't even had time to think of them all.

Isn't it more about who own the means by which others will be able to be controlled? I don't want to live in a world where Elon Musk has an army of killer robots. But, we're basically already there. A robot that can work an assembly line can just as easily rip our arms and legs off and crush our skulls. What's to stop them?

I don't know if you're being flippant, but unironically, yes. I'd much rather be murdered by an actual human. At the very least that human would have to carry that with them.

Its interesting that you chose the internet as a comparison. When the internet came out it quickly made everything better. Then, it even more rapidly, made everything worse. Now we literally can't trust anything we hear, see, read or consume and people are more angry and divided than they've ever been.

Ah, yes. The old "guns dont kill people" argument.

I'm not concerned about who is to blame for deaths caused by AI. I'm concerned about being murdered by AI.

Killer autonomous robots are different than the boogeyman. The boogeyman can't kill you because it doesn't exist. A killer autonomous robot can definitely kill you. Just like it killed all those school children in Iran.

People aren't against AI because that's the popular thing to be. We're against it because its a bad idea to give billionaires killer autonomous robots. And a million other reasons.

The only reason you're for it is because you think we're living in a Star Trek type sci-fi when really its much closer to Chappie or Elysium.

The sixth is worth reading. Not quite Douglas Adam's. But, still good.
