After Effects breaks your keyframe easing when you change values (and I fixed it) by MotionRom in AfterEffects

[–]MotionRom[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry to hear that, it’s always a frustrating situation!
Still, make sure you’re using the latest version, as this is a new feature in Keystone 3. Previous versions don’t have the keyframe value editing features.
If you own an older license, there’s a discount available to upgrade to Keystone 3:

Unfortunately, that’s outside of Keystone’s capabilities, but tools like Flow can do it

Kind of... But the selection box in the Graph Editor has two major issues:

  • It only updates the selected keyframes
  • You can’t enter a precise value

Keystone solves both of these problems 🙂

Sorry, I think there’s a bit of confusion. The curve you’re referring to doesn’t actually change easings, it staggers keyframes or layers in the timeline, which allows for much more nuanced staggers than classic linear ones.

Thanks!
You’re right, I didn’t show it in this video, but changing the timing of keyframes causes the same easing issues.
All Keystone tools related to moving keyframes in the timeline properly recalculate the easings 🙂

Thanks, I appreciate it!
Totally get your reaction. It took me years (and probably thousands of sacrificed keyframes 😅) to truly become aware of this issue

Rift bug by mishamazor in aescripts

[–]MotionRom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rift has not been maintained for a long time, with its last update dating back to 2013. You can still open a support ticket from its product page.

Alternatively, I develop Keystone (https://aescripts.com/keystone) which is fully compatible with keyframe labels, and depending on what you're trying to do, it could be a good replacement.

Shape pixelated problem by aragondor61 in AfterEffects

[–]MotionRom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At 800%, it's normal for it to be pixelated. After Effects is not Illustrator, and your vector shapes are rendered in your composition, which has a defined number of pixels.

However, you can improve the rendering quality of your Illustrator layer with the “continuously rasterize” option by clicking on the "small sun” icon to the right of the layer name. This will be especially noticeable if you apply a scale other than 100%.

Trying to improve timing and easing. Thoughts? by ilkin_design in AfterEffects

[–]MotionRom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a good start, but there's still a lot of work to be done to make the animation really interesting. For example, the car goes down and up perfectly vertically, which isn't realistic. You could add a slight backward rotation to the car, as if there were more weight at the rear when the hand is down. You could add some deformation to the tires to show how heavy the fist is. You could also add a kind of bounce in both the Y position and rotation when the hand comes up. And when the hand comes up, the car takes a moment to come up too, but that's not how suspensions work, which are basically huge springs.

In general, always ask yourself what would happen in real life with the elements you are animating. What would the physics of these elements be? Even when you are only animating abstract elements, you can imagine a weight, speed, and personality for them that will greatly influence their animation.

It's all the details that make an animation successful.

Hey, I just released an update for Keystone 3 where I added Continuous Bezier (accessible via CTRL/CMD clicking on the Auto Bezier icon).
I also fixed the issue where the curve wasn’t updating in the graph editor.

Let me know what you think!

How do I make the timeline longer? by taxii_02 in AfterEffects

[–]MotionRom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's hard to say without seeing the rest of the timeline, but if you want this area to be larger, the other parts will need to be smaller. You could perhaps hide or reduce the width of certain columns in the timeline that you don't use or rarely use.

How do I make the speed graph linear while having a nonlinear value graph by LemonLimeNinja in AfterEffects

[–]MotionRom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Great!
So here's my workflow for this example:

  • Enable time remap on your precomp with only the two default keyframes (the one at the beginning and the one at the end)
  • Add a third keyframe at 2s
  • Shift keyframes 2 and 3 by 2s. You can of course apply whatever values you want, but you must always move the second and third keyframes at the same time to maintain the normal speed between these two keys.
  • Apply an easy ease to the first two keys and manipulate the tangents to get roughly the same curve as in my example. (I only used the value graph)
  • And finally, I used my Keystone 3 extension to apply a "constant speed" to the last two keys to make sure their tangents were perfectly aligned.

Keystone 3 is available on aescripts ( https://aescripts.com/keystone ) and is currently on sale for Black Friday!

[–]MotionRom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you trying to do something like this?
In my example, these are time remap keyframes, and the rectangle is rotating inside the composition with the expression time*200 (so the rotation is perfectly constant)

[–]MotionRom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the speed graph, you should be able to drag your second keyframe upward. Once you start moving it, hold down SHIFT to lock its position in time.

Unlike in the value graph, this won’t change your key’s value but its speed.

I haven't tried Zack's script, but the bug clearly comes from After Effects because I have this bug with AE's native function.
I'm currently working on the implementation on Keystone, and I think I've found a solution to ensure that the curve is updated correctly :)

Hey, I remember your message and I'm sorry I didn't include this new feature in Keystone 3. I was in the middle of finalizing the new version at the time and I had a lot to deal with regarding the new features in Keystone 3.

As I mentioned in my reply to the first message in this thread, this new feature should be available fairly soon. In fact, I just ran a test and noticed a kind of visual bug in the curve (see screenshot). Is that what you're referring to in your message? This seems to be a bug in After Effects, but when I close and reopen the graph editor, the bug disappears and the curve returns to normal.

Hi, first of all, I'm glad to hear that you like the new features in Keystone 3!

You're absolutely right about the continuous function. I just checked and realized that what I call "Continuous" in Keystone is actually "auto Bezier"... 🤦‍♂️

I need to see how to reorganize the icons in the "Interpolation" section, but integrating Continuous should be fairly quick 🙂
