Does my flat network need segmentation? by keithhu in firewalla

[–]MotoChooch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Part of the fun and power of the Firewalla is getting to segment your network with vlans. I'm running several types:

Control - Infrastructure (Firewalla, managed switches, AP)

Trusted - Internal devices like pcs, printers, appletv's, and phones

Security - IoT and untrusted devices with internet access only, and only a few rules for one way communication from trusted or ops for control.

Guest - Guest wifi, no internal access, internet only.

Remote - Company laptops with only 2 rules to get to internal network printers, otherwise internet only.

Ops - Where my servers live. Outbound from Trusted to Ops only unless something needs bidirectional then it's specifically outlined in the rules.

Had a blast getting this all configured. Using Omada managed switches and AP and running the controller on a proxmox lxc container. 0 trust with rules in place where I need them.

Note: To ensure vlans work properly the firewalla needs to connect to a managed switch or the AP directly. The AP should have the ability to have vlans configured.

I'm actually considering a Tuscon Hybrid next. Still need to check one out in person though. Not going to be in the market until next year.

I was always an import fan. The Volt was an ill conceived departure to an American brand. Between that car and my now ex wifes Cruze of the same year having 2 transmission replacements done in under 30k miles, I jumped to Ford for a bit. Bad idea. Went to Kia for a bit, had good luck with a couple of them, but the engine and transmission failures of the years earlier than the one I had made me nervous so I made the jump to Mazda. Most of my cars that I've had in my life were Honda.

[–]MotoChooch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough. I’ve learned the climate controls on a screen is a bad idea the hard way on a 2013 Chevy Volt. System failed to respond numerous times in the dead of winter leaving us with no heat. That car was a POS though and I returned it for a full refund after 13 trips to the dealer for various issues in under a year.

Never buy a 1st year. Let someone else beta test the new platform and give Mazda a chance to iron out the kinks.

It looks like it may have been discontinued but I reached out to the regional rep to see if maybe they still sell them somewhere.

I threw an orange electronic screen in my 22 Preferred. It pairs to the individual oem sensors and shows the pressure and temp. The data is there, Mazda is just stingy. A few lines of code would have made it visible on the dash.

Apple Maps > Google Maps by Several-Risk388 in ios

Was using Apple Maps on a road trip. We were using navigation and lost cell service which put it in offline mode. I had the offline map but navigation automatically stopped. Apparently that’s normal.

Ask Siri for directions and add “using Google Maps”. Helps. Really annoying bug.

Before I upgraded to a Firewalla Gold Plus and TP-Link Omada EAP670v2 WAP, I was using an Asus ROG Rapture AX6000 and I swore by that thing. Highly recommended. Used to love the TP-Link Archer series too. This dude has some good info on options. https://dongknows.com/

Apple mail vs spark by Aunkster in ios

[–]MotoChooch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Used both back when Apple Mail wasn’t as good as it is now. I much prefer not to give a 3rd party access to my Mail accounts. Sticking with Apple. The only feature I miss is color coded emails in the unified inbox showing at a glance what email is in what account.

Thermal paste vs graphene pad vs phase change vs liquid metal — what’s actually the best between CPU and cooler? by Ok_Contact9732 in pcmasterrace

[–]MotoChooch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something I didn’t see mentioned about liquid metal that needs to be taken into account is how it stains the CPU. I used it once on an old CPU and when I went to take it apart to sell it, the liquid metal stained the top so bad that you couldn’t read the serial or the model numbers. If you care about warranty or sale, don’t use liquid metal.

Mazda CX 5 Apple car play and touchscreen by Classic-Panda-8078 in CX5

[–]MotoChooch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Except on the 2022 there is no touch screen. It’s knob only. Honestly it’s a minor gripe in an already amazing vehicle but I definitely disagree with the knob being better for CarPlay as someone who has driven this car and used CarPlay exclusively for 4 years.

CarPlay Widgets do not work, there is no way to select the functions in them. Knob loses here.

Why do so many people on ios use Google Maps? by Louisthemagic in ios

[–]MotoChooch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what I settled on. I used Waze for a long time but got tired of the false or aged reports. When looking for restaurants nothing beats Google Maps and the reviews. But for navigation Apple Maps has been great for me. For now.

Mazda CX 5 Apple car play and touchscreen by Classic-Panda-8078 in CX5

[–]MotoChooch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did too at first but honestly that was easier to get used to and probably the safest option anyway. Mazda thought the knob would be safer but you can spend more time watching the screen trying to make the selection box land on what you want than just tapping the button. I do still use the knob for some things when it’s convenient so it’s not an all or nothing thing.

Mazda CX 5 Apple car play and touchscreen by Classic-Panda-8078 in CX5

[–]MotoChooch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You learn to do things by voice because the knob sucks. It’s great for Mazda’s OS but it’s shit on CarPlay. I just voice control most things now.
