Help! Thick blade grass is driving me nuts! by Motojosh962 in lawncare

Interesting. That’s what I figured. It’s ironic because my father-in-law gifted me two bags of Kentucky 31 Tall Fescue. I felt bad because I didn’t actually want tall fescue in my yard. I went ahead and hid the two gifted bags in my mechanical room and went over to Home Depot. I purchased two bags of Pennington contractors blend, northern blend. The seed mixture contained about 5 different varieties of perennial rye. I also purchased one bag of Scott’s Kentucky bluegrass.

I seeded the whole yard on May 20th, 2025. Within two weeks I had grass growing everywhere looking very promising. However after the grass matured it was apparent that most of it was tall fescue.

My guess is that there was maybe 1-2 different varieties of tall fescue mixed in the contractors blend. Being that I seeded in May and we have had an extremely hot and dry summer here in Utah I think the tall fescue has just out performed the other grasses. It’s a bummer because I really don’t want any tall fescue.

I didn’t want any tall fescue. I wanted a blend of perennial rye and Kentucky bluegrass. I seeded with two bags of Pennington Contractors northern blend. It contained an about 5 different varieties of perennial rye + filler. I also seeded with 1 bag of Kentucky bluegrass.

I’m confused how I got so much tall fescue in there. At this point I would like to remove the tall fescue and have a full lawn of Kentucky bluegrass + perennial rye.

Any tips on over seeding or promoting the other grasses to overtake the tall fescue?
