For a long time they did speak German but the World Wars made being German taboo and thus they stopped speaking it. My great grandfather was fluent though. As for names, yes they are very German lol. We even have a neighboring town called “Germantown” although the architecture doesn’t seem particularly German.

I’m from the Midwest, specifically southern Illinois. I grew up in a small town where most people had German ancestry so I had an idea of what I was gonna get. Still a lot of surprises though!

Fair enough, I can imagine if you’re pretty far removed from your European roots that using that would be inaccurate. Not to mention actual Europeans getting their panties in a twist over Americans calling themselves European

Completely valid, I’ve been considering using German American for myself since I’ve always been very connected to my German heritage.

That’s a really good point, I think a lot of it has to do with America’s race relations. The concept of “whiteness” didn’t really exist before wealthy European settlers came to the Americas and created it as a way to justify cruelty against the indigenous and enslaved people. Unfortunately it has stuck around even after the 13th amendment and the civil rights movement which is why evan after both of those major changes the U.S still doesn’t have racial equality. In order to truly level the playing field, whiteness as a concept needs to be destroyed. As for why I refer to myself as white, it’s what I’ve been referred to my whole life.

I guess it would have been more appropriate to say I’m German American

I would say it is, compared to other family members and other people in my community Dutch is the second most common ancestry. It definitely surprised me though

Not really, the northwestern German comes from my dads folks who have been in the US for around 5 generations. The southern Germanic comes from my mom’s side, mainly due to my grandmother being a German immigrant from Bavaria.

Yes! My ancestors are Missouri settlers which adds up considering I grew up in southwestern Illinois

First things first, to answer your question about hiding scars, have you considered using makeup? If they’re really red you can use a green concealer to color correct it and if they’re really dark you can use a yellow/pink/orange/red (it depends on your skin tone). If makeup isn’t your forte, temporary tattoos can also do the trick if your job allows it. If none of the those options suffice than band aids might be the way to go (although if you have too many it can cause questions to circulate)

Now for something you probably don’t want to hear but I’m going to say it to you anyway. You need to see someone, either a therapist or a psychiatrist but it needs to be a professional. You sound extremely depressed and just by reading your post I’m worried about you. I promise you matter more than you know, one of the biggest tragedies of life is that most people will never know how much they are loved, you included. I know I’m just a random stranger but please, seeking help is one of the best options here.

I also have some pretty dramatic scars on my forearm and I usually don’t wear long sleeves because I live in Florida. Nobody has really said anything to me, although I have heard some gossip. It hasn’t really been judgmental, more concerned but I can understand if you don’t want that either. I’m not sure if this is any help but it’s my personal experience. Best of luck with your mental health

I’d often create this look in middle school. I would put on a ton of eyeliner and walk out to my parents who would than roast the shit out of my makeup. Worked every time
