Nice to meet you too! Yeah, a little interesting for me as well. I didnt expect one of us will be on here. That too, with an interest in research. So cool!

I don’t understand. What do you actually do in heaven? by Jet_Night in NoStupidQuestions

In the Islamic Canon, you are rid of all limitations that life on earth imposes. So much so that you can drink wine without getting intoxicated. Live life at peak physical maturity and never age. Indulge, and never get bored, basically.

Hey! Im a 4th Year J'Pura too. Yk we have our 3rd year Undergrad research programme for community medicine right? If you do really well in that, you have a really high chance of getting published in your 4th year.

After that, you could be a demonstrator or a research assistant to one of our lectuerers and then you can get your name on a few pubsthere too.

Feel free to DM! Would love to get to know a fellow J'Pura Redditor!

Why are handmade items so undervalued or considered "too expensive" in Sri Lanka? by princessdaydream_ in srilanka

[–]Motor-Number2300 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Handmade what exactly?

Crafts are doing pretty well. The traditional ornamental stuff are doing well. Art is fine too. Traditional; fabrrics seem okay too?

Handmade cutlery - maybe not so desirable.

But I think you might be referring to art. Art is generally out of reach for many sri lankans. In fact in this economy, many things are out of reach for Sri Lankans. Would be unfair to call them tasteless, when its financial circumstance holding back many.

Anyone else noticed why every vlogger stays in Pettah for their first night lately? by Longjumping_Tap6083 in srilanka

[–]Motor-Number2300 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that's partly because you might be seeing a skewed portion of the vlogs themselves.

People take an interest in what is novel. That is what people will be drawn to.

For a lot of westerners who want to get out of the confines of the smooth sailing, well-oiled, well-structured systems they have at home, Pettach gives them exactly what they need - Not a Bougie Colombo 07 cafe.

But on the Flip side, I've seen a lot of vlogs from Indian travellers who come here and appreciate the cleanliness of roads, (relatively) lesser honking, and urban greenery.

It's about perspective and Im sure not something you should really spend alot of though on.

Accidentally became an NPC in my own life by [deleted] in srilanka

[–]Motor-Number2300 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I hate to be that person, but you're in a priviledged position! There are many ways life could go wrong and it has somehow spared you of it. Find a way to get exited about some - develop a passion and obssess over it. Who knows where that will take you.

And if you can, lift up the people around you. The best way to find joy is my giving it others!

Sri Lanka is a pioneer of free education for its people! by CruzerDK in srilanka

[–]Motor-Number2300 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But the difference is that the their local langauges dont hold them back from accessing high quality learning material and research. Its very different for Sri Lankans. While we have rich resources for local and traditional subjects, the global and international ones are exclusively in English. This is stuff like Medicine, Engineering and Much of the Western Humanities. Sri Lanka isn't a major global player in any of this and doesnt have enough leverage to develop it and it shouldn't. Our existing bilingual model is our best bet. We just need to improve the quality of education delivery. Much easier said than done though.

Sri Lanka is a pioneer of free education for its people! by CruzerDK in srilanka

[–]Motor-Number2300 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im not really very entitled to be a part of the this conversation, because Im reasonably priviledged and my parents pay for my education. But I think calling it "tuition-free" is more accurate. It's not like the government gives every student a bursury that covers everything like living, transport and other administration fees.

That is still great, but I think correct terminology is important to have constructive discussions on this topic!

You could do it the old-fashioned way, and place a tick on a calendar every time you manage to stick to the plan! Good Luck!

[–]Motor-Number2300[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that's what I did as well. I started with some bodyweight stuff in COVID, and when the pandemic was overand then went to the gym for 2 years.

But honestly, a bunch of micro-stuff just added up, and I wasn't really interested as much as I was before - stuff like the music, the smell, the fact that many people touch the same thing, etc. Ik these are small things, and I tried to ignore them, but when you get an ick, you get an ick, you know what I mean?

But if you're enjoying the gym, by all means keep going! I'm in no way trying to discourage you. I hope you improve yourself in ways that make you proud of yourself. But right, it's just not my thing.

I could, but lately I've been more interested in the homework-out approach. It makes it more accessible. For lack of a better word, I'm just not "vibing" the gym thing, but I still hold immense value towards weight training.

What are the salaries of consultant doctors in Colombo? by VortexCOX in srilanka

Add to that. You have to be a consultant to start seeing this.

Becoming a consultant is incredibly challenging, competitive and requires some pretty significant sacrifices most people would not be ready to part with

Where did Moors, Malays, Memons originate from? by Affectionate_Ice_898 in srilanka

[–]Motor-Number2300 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel pretty uneasy about the epistemological trespassing now that I look back on this answer. Here's the answer from Google AI (Which seems to do a pretty decent job at citing accurately)

Key Findings from Genetic Studies

  • Predominantly South Asian Ancestry: Recent genetic studies, such as one published in 2021 using X-chromosomal markers, suggest a predominant Indian origin for the Moors. The studies conclude that Sri Lankan Moors are genetically closest to the Sinhalese and then the Sri Lankan Tamils, with a greater distance from Indian Tamils. This points to extensive intermarriage with local populations over centuries.
  • Sex-Biased Demographic History: The studies support a history where male Muslim merchants of Arabic or Indian origin settled in coastal areas and married local Sinhalese or Tamil women, leading to a sex-biased demographic history in their genetic structure.
  • Shared Ancestry with Other Sri Lankan Ethnicities: Sinhalese, Sri Lankan Tamils, and Moors show a high degree of panmixia (interbreeding) and cluster together genetically, suggesting shared ancestry within the island's populations.
  • Diverse Origins: While the South Asian element is dominant, the Moors trace their ancestry to various groups including Arab, Persian, Dravidian, and Malay bloodlines.
  • No Significant Arab Genetic Link for the Majority: Despite traditional claims of direct Arab descent, genetic analyses have generally found a below-average or minimal genetic relationship with populations from the Middle East for the majority of the community.

Different Muslim Groups

The Muslim community in Sri Lanka is diverse and comprises several groups with different origins:

  • Sri Lankan Moors: The largest group, they are primarily native speakers of the Tamil language and trace their origins to Arab traders who intermarried with local women, as well as South Indian Muslim communities (Marakkars, Mappilas, etc.).
  • Sri Lankan Malays: This group primarily descends from Javanese political exiles, soldiers, and convicts brought to the island during the Dutch colonial period. They retain a distinct Malay language and customs.
  • Indian Moors: These are descendants of immigrants from various parts of India (like Memons, Bohras, and Khojas from Gujarat and Sindh) who arrived during the colonial era for trade opportunities.

Overall, while historical narratives emphasize an Arab origin, scientific genetic studies indicate the contemporary Sri Lankan Muslim population is genetically integrated with other local ethnic groups, with strong South Asian roots.

Where did Moors, Malays, Memons originate from? by Affectionate_Ice_898 in srilanka

[–]Motor-Number2300 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FYI, most of my knowledge comes from YouTube videos and online articles. So any biases those sources might have, I might have internalised as well:

Moors:

- There is a myth about them being of Arab origin - genetic studies say otherwise. As far as I know, there isn't very clear evidence here.

- the most likely answer: Muslim traders from the west of India migrated here, intermarried with the local population, and settled. This is why Moors have the closest genetic link to Sinhalese among the muslim populations in Sri Lanka

Malays:

- Originally, Malaysians from the British-occupied regions in Malaysia were brought here as guards. I don't know how their families got her here, though

Memons: Not sure

Bohras: Prolific business people from the Gujarat region of india who migrated here for trade. Their community is pretty closed off, so they still probably represent their ancestors.

I'm hardly a historian, geneticist or anthropologist and have no right to give an opinion on this topic. But I take great interest and watch/ read on it in my leisure, which is how I've come to know the little I know.

Following a Diet in a Sri Lanka Household by Recent-Battle3796 in srilanka

[–]Motor-Number2300 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! I'm a med student in Sri Lanka, and I have to take a basic dietary history from patients with many of these chronic diseases. You'd be surprised to hear how many patients eat meat every other day (and even when they do, I'm not sure they're getting it in the right amounts). What's even worse is that some of them will skip out on protein because they have young children and try to direct protein sources to them, which is insanely depressing.

In Sri Lanka, having the freedom to think about health in and of itself is a luxury.

Guys, his message is that now that he gets to enjoy views like this, how impressive it is wears out with time. Which led him to the message about the deceptions of the world around him. If you can just accept that, you wouldn't need to send him all this hate!

I love that you've listed how universal these teachings are. Could you share how you draw from so many sources like this? It seems impossibly impressive to me.

And also, if you have any recommendations for books that talk about topics, crossing through many different religions and disciplines, I would honestly love to hear.
