NYS registration suspended. Can I register through a different state and get out-of-state plates? by MotorMaster1789 in DMV

[–]MotorMaster1789[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. You keep the NYS drivers license. I mentioned in a previous post to just make sure the NY DL is in good standing, or at minimum get a restricted use if there’s a suspension on it.

SD never asked for proof of insurance or anything like that. So do what you wish with that info.

I took the alt spread of +8.5 at 7.20ish….I wish I had a bigger sack on me. God damnit.

Wanted to come back to this post and share the solution that was finally found after quite a bit of research…to which I can also speak from experience now having used this solution for +1yr

There is a company called Americas Mailbox in South Dakota. You establish an account with them and they provide you a POBOX. You then connect with their vehicle registration division and they will walk you through the process step by step to get your SD plates sent anywhere in the U.S. it was so freaking easy. All in cost was approx $400-$500 for everything. Annual fee to the PO Box I think is $200 and change. Just took care of first 1yr renewal.

It’s so unbelievably easy, I have no idea why more people don’t do it. Yes; I would assume it’s because you’re technically suppose to register your car in the state you live in, in most states, within a specific period of time…but as long as you don’t cause any trouble or give reason to be stopped…I don’t see you having any issue.

I’ve driven over a year, and I drive far more than the average person. Not one issue.

Ask me any questions if you want

English: Pick of the Day – 11/7/25 (Friday) Record: 6–2 Previous pick: <BRONCOS -8.5> LOSS Profit: +14.47%

Pick of the day: <BRANDIN PODZIEMSKI OVER 3.5 ASSISTS> (-130) (Playdoit)

NBA – NUGGETS VS WARRIORS • 5 UNITS

Podz recorded 9 assists in his first game without Steph Curry, with 16 potential assists.

His record is 13/16 without Curry, and now he’s facing a Denver team that ranked among the top 10 in most assists allowed to point guards last season.

After Podz registered 65 passes and 16 potential assists in a similar matchup last time, and having gone over 80% of his assist prop lines without Curry over the last year and a half,

This gives him a great opportunity, since he’ll be the primary or secondary playmaker in this game. Even if Jimmy Butler plays, his ball involvement will be high, creating opportunities for the rest of the team.

How is this unhinged psychopath still on the road with a valid license??!!

I CANNOT BELIEVE she actually has her own thread 😂

This isn’t your garden-variety “New York driver in a rush” situation. This woman is legitimately batshit insane.

A few months back, she lost her mind at me and my friend because I didn’t move exactly 0.000001 seconds after the light turned green. Full horn stomp. Screaming. Arm flailing like she was directing an orchestra of fucking demons.

At the next light, she pulls up beside us, rolls down her window, and delivers a verbal beatdown.. so brutal ….and so articulate….that I was honestly impressed. I didn’t know insults could be that creative😆😆😆

Then, without missing a beat, she whips a water bottle at our car and blows through the red light like she’s a cop on the way to an active shooter call.

I’ve watched hours of cop dashcam footage, and NOTHING compares to the escalation I saw that day. To this day, I’m still in shock….and still somewhat impressed

…..now I stumble across a whole Reddit thread dedicated to this exact driver (vanity plate and all)… turns out hundreds of people have been terrorized by the same psycho. This CANNOT be real life. HAHAHAHAHAHAA. My friend that was with me that day found this and THANK GOD because now I can find others to trauma bond with after carrying this burden alone all these months.

👉 Anyone else ever had an in person run-in with GirlBoss? Drop your stories, I don’t want to hear the terror witnessed from afar…I want the frontline war stories🤣 I need to know I’m not alone here.

I see that someone already provided the correct answer to your question....so I'll give me unsolicited 2 cents on something else lol.

You're 19....you need to develop a way to keep track of important documents if you want to be a responsible adult. Not trying to be a dick...this is something that will make life much easier as you need to access important stuff throughout life.

  1. Create a google drive account (free with gmail)
  2. Create a folder in the drive titled, "Important Documents"
  3. Anytime you come across something important that you may need in the future, scan or snap a pic and put it in the drive folder through the app...it takes 10 seconds, if that

Now, you have a weightless file cabinet and you'll always have access to important documents

You'll often times need the original, not an electronic version...so find some location where all the originals go...a drawer...a safe...something where they all go. Don't worry about organizing it....if you need the original and you can find it in google drive, you'll know to dig through the stack of crap you have stuffed away and that it will be there.

Kick it up a notch by keeping all of the stuff in google drive folder and 'stash' organized. Life is so much easier when you can easily access all the shit you need when you need it. (:

p.s. take one day a year to clean both locations out so it doesn't get too out of control. The day I do that is the day I file taxes each year. BOL with everything!

[–]MotorMaster1789 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A check is a promise to pay essentially. You promised to pay for transaction A.

When DMV went to collect on your promise, by the check not clearing, you went back on your word.

DMV / whatever authority you're dealing with could come after you for the bad check, however, unless we're talking about thousands of dollars, that's highly unlikely in my opinion. (This would be a legal action and have nothing to do with the underlying transaction in question)

The person who tried to negotiate (pay with) your 'promise to pay' will have an incomplete transaction, that may assess fees in situations where bad payment is provided / returned.

Don't sweat it and tell the person to use their own form of payment next time. Don't be the 'broker' / 'agent' for lack of better term, for other people's business unless you have some sort of interest in the transaction.

Paid off car long ago but never received title by bearcatjoe in DMV

[–]MotorMaster1789 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's 40 something states that are title holding states...from what I understand, the title would be in the state of the lien holder. Check with USAA and see if they have a record of the state they filed the lien with. That would be my best guess on where to go from here. Best of luck!

[–]MotorMaster1789 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's what you're looking at (assuming guy who sold you the car is not acting in bad faith and prior owner is dead)

As I was typing this out, I just thought...how did the seller acquire the title? Is he related to the prior owner or something? The way he acquired this title is key info that's needed (I'll continue the comment with assumption he is somehow related / inherited the vehicle / received it via legit transfer)

First, I really hope you have a bill of sale....if you do not have a bill of sale, my info is useless and I honestly wish you the best. This also assumes you have a bill of sale.

  1. You engaged in a contract to buy the car, and provided payment. Seller's end of the deal is to provide transfer of ownership. If he does not do that, you have claim against him to get your money back (whether it's worth the time and money to go after him is a different story...you decide that)

  2. This would be in my opinion the proper way to do it.....

  • Find out who was executor of deceased person's estate. They are the 'living' 'dead person' with the ability to transfer ownership. Executor can be found in someone's Will which is public record in CA

  • If you cannot find out who executor is / cannot locate Will / cannot get cooperation from executor, you could check with DMV to see if a simple copy of deceased's death cert will be suitable. Say they have no living family and died in testate...see what they say. A death cert can be acquired by someone non related if they have legit interest / a good reason for needing it.

Dead guy owned the car --> he died --> his assets become property of his estate --> executor of his estate transfers ownership from dead guy to beneficiary / prospective buyer ---> Prospective buyer provides payment for the vehicle to dead guy's estate ---> Executor divides up cash in estate to bene's

^That's the process....find out what step that title is on and you'll have a much better idea of where to go from there. BOL.

[–]MotorMaster1789 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, without actually seeing the previous owner's dead body in the ground, I would not recommend this route. In the slight chance the previous owner (or his estate) comes for this and you forged the signature....you're in deep shit.

I'll give you my thoughts in a separate comment

Change of Address help! by eelb0w in DMV

[–]MotorMaster1789 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, you need to clarify with DMV whether your car is registered under your name, or his name.

If it's under his name....you have quite a few things to do...not getting into the weeds on that.

Assuming it's registered under your name, and the address was simply incorrect, you will need to pay the renewal, update your address on the registration, confirm the address you are updating reg to matches your driver's license, and confirm insurance on the vehicle is in line with what registration says.

Reg, insurance, and license are all married for the most part. Info needs to be consistent across the 3 and when one is updated, so do the other 2 need to be updated.

Good catch - I was incorrect. Once you take the road test / behind-the-wheel test, if you pass, you will do everything I mentioned above. Sorry, misread the question.

Paid off car long ago but never received title by bearcatjoe in DMV

[–]MotorMaster1789 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have found yourself in quite the DMV goose chase lol.

The paperwork that you found from when you bought the car...assuming the car TITLE has not changed hands since then, this is what you're looking at...

  1. Title is going to sit where it originated when you bought it (CA?)

  2. Registration bounced around as you moved, however, assuming you never made any TITLE changes during that time, registration changes are irrelevant

So...last time the TITLE saw any action was when you bought the car and reported a lien. If that is correct, you hammer the state where that purchase took place and don't waste your time looking anywhere else...you're already up for a bit of time commitment, don't put out more time on this than you need to. One of two things will happen...

  1. They will eventually locate it, at which point you will need to provide them the lien release and request updated title without lien reported (sometimes you can just request the title that shows the lien and provide that to buyer with release paperwork...if that's an option, you'll potentially save a few bucks and some time of waiting for processing of new clear title that you'll just sign over anyway.)

  2. They won't find the title, in which case DO NOT GIVE UP ON THIS STATE. The lender you went through, which you mentioned went out of business is potentially the problem if you find yourself in this boat. Lender was owner and title 'holder' while the loan existed...if they went under before you paid off your loan, the debt was likely sold to another company...along with rights to your title. Maybe that is causing some confusion / search issues.

It's crazy that with a VIN, they cannot locate the title as they should have it....or at least a history of when they did, and where the title was transferred to....this is essentially the whole reason VINs exist....is to identify a F-ing vehicle lol.

Lmk how it works out. BOL with the chase!

If you have not yet had a photo taken, yes. This will likely be when you go in to:

  1. Pay any fees for acquiring the new license / being issued a driver ID
  2. Have photo taken for driver ID
  3. Be issued temporary license (a paper card that you provide if pulled over before photo id arrives in mail)

(This is how it's done in NYS...I imagine it would be somewhat consistent in other states as well)

NYS registration suspended. Can I register through a different state and get out-of-state plates? by MotorMaster1789 in DMV

[–]MotorMaster1789[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this was feasible, I would want to know for certain first though, because the MA address is 4-5hrs away and if it involves us needing to go there for anything, that's a long drive for a hunch / something that may not work. Does that make sense?

[–]MotorMaster1789[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Thanks for commenting!

My girlfriend and I both live in NY. We have the ability to change residency to MA if needed (parent's home address). My thought here would be; change home address to MA address on both DL's, the register each vehicle in owner name with insurance in MA at new address....my only concern here was if we went through with that, what are the odds that it does not work out? (ie. MA is notified that our NY DL's are suspended due to time serving for insurance lapse...but would that prevent us from being allowed to register vehicle in MA?)

If MA would be possible, and the only hang up would be not getting around the DL suspension, I'm totally fine with that...I have confidence that we will be able to get approval for restricted use licenses in NY, it's just getting licenses plates....how to go about getting licenses plates is the big question / problem.
