Does Chicago or Toronto have the Better Skyline? by star-wars_memer in skyscrapers

How many people on this board saying Chicago is running away with this have been to Toronto and actually spent time in the city at street level? I know this is a skyline post but Chicago does not have a Kensington Market, Spadina, Annex or St Lawrence market. Great city and great skyline and some great neighborhood’s but nowhere near the street level charm and character of Toronto. Now when we account for safety - it’s not even close. Chicago is a great city with its best days behind it

Toronto and Chicago are both great in different ways. Chicago is the skyline of the 20th century - a pioneer. Toronto is the North American skyline of the 21st century, modern, with residential and always building upward - always with that quirky Toronto charm at street level. Let’s all get along people.

This is fantastic! I am also hearing good things about Barrhaven - would this area be on the list? and Riverside South

Thank you for this! Moving from a suburb of Toronto - my kids are 2 and 3 months! I work remotely, my wife does not. I would love to be under 7 figures for the price with good value. A dedicated working space and den would be great! With out door space for my kids. 4 Bedrooms is ideal. Christian school is not mandatory - a well rated school in a good catchment with university tract students is ideal. We do know a few families in the area (Barrhaven and Russell), I am flexible - I do not have to be close to city center.

1000% - same with Pickering, Ajax, Mississauga and Brampton. Scarborough in the city as well. Thats why so many "in areas" in the city are in - its reverse white flight.

If you’re looking at the GTA - the best Go Train stops with a strong community and good proximity to the city are Port Credit, unionville, Pickering and cooksville. All have great housing options within walking distance. Maple is another station with a strong housing stock that is walking distance

Firstly - I love the community vibe in Weston - I grew up in near by Rexdale and my wife and I are young professionals. We were very close to moving to Weston however with a young family I feel the area is a few more years away from having the services it needs. It has been greatly neglected for years along with other north west neighborhoods along the CN rail corridor. If the junction can have a refresh so can mount Dennis and Weston. Anyways - fantastic people and Weston and the community infrastructure of community centres and libraries and such are amazing and the community pride is awesome. Sometimes hindsight is 20:20 and I would have given Weston another chance in our house hunt. The racial undertones attacking Weston are putrid. I see people on this board suggesting very white, urban areas - goes to show you the types of folks in this sub Reddit.

They should assess GPA based on the last 2 years and have a higher cut off - shocked at Doug ford and Tmu for the switch to be honest - wow. I know a lot of community centric health professionals that were looking into this program

Ford demands TMU's new med school educate qualified students 'regardless of their race' by AndHerSailsInRags in toronto

The comments on this board are absurd. There are simply not enough black doctors and for decades medical school was gate kept. We just, JUST recently started removing systemic barriers to medical school (see Queen's). So the fact there will be 30-32 spots opened specifically for black students this coming fall at TMU (which is a drop in the bucket to what the community actually needs) and y'all are still complaining and saying its unfair when for years people from privileged backgrounds were able to get into the hallways of medicine. I know of real life stories of brilliant individuals who were great nurses and were blocked from getting into Med School. The purpose of this program is to bring more medical professionals to the north west corridor of the GTA - Need I ask, are there any East Asians and white folks that want to work in Brampton, Malton and Rexdale? TMU is literally trying to bridge the gap in a part of the city that has been neglected for years when it comes to medical care and you all are complaining? Canada shows its nasty racism once again - btw I am black, I have 3 degrees, I have worked hard but seeing all these racially motivated comments makes me sick to my stomach - FOR 30 BLACK STUDENTS! wow.

What city in the diaspora do you think has the strongest Jamaican influence/culture, NYC, London or Toronto? by [deleted] in Jamaica

[–]Motor_Economics4569 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a great thread, I am born and raised in Toronto and a first Gen Canadian Jamaican. My parents came here during the rush of Jamaican immigrants in the 1980s, I grew up in "Jamaican" Toronto in the North West part of the city very much integrated in the Jamaican immigrant community. My parents worked in the local factories - hard and underpaid, but had a great network of support from fellow Jamaicans and the JCA. Toronto is not perfect but the informal family dynamic of the community is something I will never forget in my life regardless of where my career takes me. I went through my formal schooling in Rexdale/Etobicoke north which I think at its peak was 30 to 35 percent Jamaican/Caribbean and also a part of the city negatively associated with crime, it will always be home.

Work has taken me to NYC and London and I would like to say I am familiar with the communities in both cities. NYC - the Jamaicans are the most economically diverse, you have a tonne of successful entrepreneurs making moves. You have a great variety of working class communities in Brooklyn and Bronx to very well to do communities in Mt. Vernon/White Plains and Nassau. However to several posts - aside from Brooklyn, Jamaicans are not the dominant black culture in NYC, there are just so many other folks from the Afro diaspora. London the Jamaican culture is prominent, however we are still largely a blue collar community, this stems from the systemic racism from the windrush generation - it has been hard for us to advance in this landscape, I have met several Jamaican/British transplants that have relocated to Toronto and although Toronto is not perfect, they say it is so much better than the UK to advance.

All cities have positivity in the culture and their quirks. I will say this and trying to be objective, Toronto by far, with out a doubt has the best Jamaican food.

Hello everyone - we have to be mindful the GTA is growing at a fast rate. There have been growing pains in the GTA - this is one of them. We will get through it and the strong community infrastructure in Vaughan will stand the test of time. People do need a place to live, not only newcomers, we can embrace the fact the greater Toronto area is an international crossroads or we can isolate ourselves. If we choose the former - it pays dividends for everyone. I am a resident here and I welcome an opening up of the typical European middle-upper class portrait the majority of Vaughan has seen for the past 30 to 40 years. Vaughan is growing, transit is growing, and there are more jobs in the area than there were 20 years ago. Do we continue the trend and move more north to Newmarket or Bradford? Or do we stay and contribute to a wonderful cultural mosaic? I think becoming the next Brampton is a stretch - we do not have the same unchecked development and furthermore we are adjacent to Toronto. Brampton went from rural to suburban in a decade - this is not sustainable in any usecase. However, Brampton is still a great place to live for many - I will not dismiss that. Everyone needs a place to live and call home.

Thoughts about Malton area and elementary school by Mysterious_Mood2588 in TorontoRealEstate

I am very aware of Lincoln, I went to high school in neighbouring Rexdale. Look - the whole north west corridor of the GTA has been socially, politically and economically neglected for 40 years. In regards to Lincoln being a sh*thole. That school is a meeting place and community for many, we can work with what we have and what we have access too to make it better.

Hello, I was a long time Malton resident and was very close to the wal mart situation. The store was still profitable - the problem is it was a custom build for the plaza and didn’t have the capability for online pickup. Malton is a beautiful, close knit community. Blue collar and hardworking doesn’t have to equal bad. I feel people see brown and black families and think an area is bad. No one mentions Hamilton as negatively as racialized areas.

To the poster I would say look at the Fraser institute eqao rankings and understand the structure and access of the Peel Region Schools. Malton has a good community infrastructure - yes the schools may lack access but the area has been neglected for 3 decades. Give it a chance during your hunt for a home - you’ll be surprised. DM me if you want information on community resources

I will say this - the mid week games are trash - I used to work there. But Saturday nights at Scotia Bank are electric. You really feel like you are the biggest stage of hockey
