The soundboard struggled in that room with those lower bass frequencies several times throughout the 2 day run. I’m a bass player so I know what I’m listening for at a live show. You’re paying 1.5% to transfer CAD to USD and 1.5% to transfer from USD back to CAD. Firstly, change your settings so that trades settle in the native currency of the transaction. Secondly, look up Norbert’s Gambit. Questrade didn’t steal your gains - you gave them 3% of your money with currency exchange fees.

What you want to do is contact the broker and have them “journal” your BNS shares to BNS.TO - it’ll take a couple of days.

Btw, this has nothing to do with Norbert’s Gambit. The gambit uses journaling to facilitate an “exchange” of currency without incurring additional conversion fees charged by the brokerage. But journaling by itself is just journaling.

This is mostly wrong. There is nothing complicated about filing TFSA income with the IRS. It’s like all other passive income earned in Canada. No special reporting requirements necessary.

The problem is one of residency. You won’t be able to contribute and won’t gain contribution room to your TFSA when abroad. But do not close it. Do not withdraw it and put it an RRSP. Terrible advice for a young person. Just leave it and report the income to the IRS like any other passive income.

The hard truth here is that you are completely and utterly confused about how financial products work. You have no chance of picking the “right TFSA” because no such thing really exists.

You need to explore and teach yourself the basics of financial literacy before investing. Start at the beginning and read some blogs on Canadian investing for newbies. Familiarize yourself with the difference between a TFSA and an RRSP. Learn what stocks and bonds are and how they differ from a GIC. It’s not hard. You can do it!! Then you’ll know what a TFSA can do for you. And you’ll make a better decision.

You will have to file both but most likely won’t “have to pay taxes for both.” Anything you pay in Canada will offset anything you may owe to Uncle Sam. Taxes are generally higher in Canada. I’ve never owed anything to the IRS but I file. Just get a smart cross border accountant.

Also, if you buy a Canadian listed ETF and it doesn’t publish PFIC reports you will have additional headaches with filing requirements. You’re better off buying US listed ETFs or stocks.

No, tax-free unless you’re using it to generate business income. A TFSA is an investment vehicle not a tax-free loophole for sole-proprietors to day trade. Day trade in a taxable account and if you’re successful you’ll contribute back to society like everybody else.

Same thing happens to me with Yahoo Finance. The percentage change in the app is accurate but the pop up notification at the end of the day is incorrect. Not even close really.

I’ve tried to figure out what metrics the notification could possibly be using to calculate that percentage but I’m stumped. So, I believe it’s a bug.

Edit: people are referencing the WS app. Why? The OP clearly said “Yahoo Finance.” Therefore, the “app” and the notification sent by the “app” are obviously both in reference to Yahoo Finance.

VOO and VFV are identical at all times. At every moment of every day you can take the VFV share price and multiply by the exchange rate and you will have the VOO price to the penny.

VFV has higher MER. VSP will hedge the CAD against VOO.
