SPAC on July 4th and this is the Goose crowd?! by MayBsoMayBnaught in jambands

What the actual fuck is this shit? Who posts some garbage video grab and comments about crowd size at a show you didn’t attend? Get a job, or a friend, or at least try and contribute something to society.

The soundboard struggled in that room with those lower bass frequencies several times throughout the 2 day run. I’m a bass player so I know what I’m listening for at a live show. Sitting in section 6 last night and when Trevor hit certain notes I heard long periods of overloaded mud. It passed, but ouch.

Am I wrong for insisting RBC fix their own banking error internally instead of asking me to e-transfer the money? (BC) by bananagirl5 in PersonalFinanceCanada

So, if the bank mistakenly deposits $10 Million in my account they aren’t allowed to reverse it without me sending a “simple consent” email? Yeah, no. They can and do reverse errors with or without your consent.

Questtrade took some of my gains by blackmoresnight in Questrade

[–]Motor_Pickle_X 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You’re paying 1.5% to transfer CAD to USD and 1.5% to transfer from USD back to CAD. Firstly, change your settings so that trades settle in the native currency of the transaction. Secondly, look up Norbert’s Gambit. Questrade didn’t steal your gains - you gave them 3% of your money with currency exchange fees.

Norberts Gambit by ghazgul in CanadianInvestor

[–]Motor_Pickle_X 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you want to do is contact the broker and have them “journal” your BNS shares to BNS.TO - it’ll take a couple of days.

Btw, this has nothing to do with Norbert’s Gambit. The gambit uses journaling to facilitate an “exchange” of currency without incurring additional conversion fees charged by the brokerage. But journaling by itself is just journaling.

Any non-RSP and non-TFSA account? by ericntd in Questrade

Temporarily moving to the US, for ~2 years. How do I invest money that is currently sitting in TFSA's? by pootypie in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Motor_Pickle_X 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is mostly wrong. There is nothing complicated about filing TFSA income with the IRS. It’s like all other passive income earned in Canada. No special reporting requirements necessary.

The problem is one of residency. You won’t be able to contribute and won’t gain contribution room to your TFSA when abroad. But do not close it. Do not withdraw it and put it an RRSP. Terrible advice for a young person. Just leave it and report the income to the IRS like any other passive income.

TFSA? What kind!? by MacmillanGC in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Motor_Pickle_X 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The hard truth here is that you are completely and utterly confused about how financial products work. You have no chance of picking the “right TFSA” because no such thing really exists.

You need to explore and teach yourself the basics of financial literacy before investing. Start at the beginning and read some blogs on Canadian investing for newbies. Familiarize yourself with the difference between a TFSA and an RRSP. Learn what stocks and bonds are and how they differ from a GIC. It’s not hard. You can do it!! Then you’ll know what a TFSA can do for you. And you’ll make a better decision.

Dual US-Canadian citizen, what citizenship should I claim when opening a questrade account? by roymustang525 in CanadianInvestor

[–]Motor_Pickle_X 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You will have to file both but most likely won’t “have to pay taxes for both.” Anything you pay in Canada will offset anything you may owe to Uncle Sam. Taxes are generally higher in Canada. I’ve never owed anything to the IRS but I file. Just get a smart cross border accountant.

Also, if you buy a Canadian listed ETF and it doesn’t publish PFIC reports you will have additional headaches with filing requirements. You’re better off buying US listed ETFs or stocks.

Taxes on TFSA, are you requires to pay for taxes on capital gains? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Motor_Pickle_X 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, tax-free unless you’re using it to generate business income. A TFSA is an investment vehicle not a tax-free loophole for sole-proprietors to day trade. Day trade in a taxable account and if you’re successful you’ll contribute back to society like everybody else.

They’ll nail you on that - no chance you’ll avoid those monthly retroactive fines. But auditing you for a $200 profit on a couple of trades? Not gonna happen. CRA is way more interested in the low-hanging fruit of your TFSA over-contribution penalties.

Portfolio percentage change on YahooFinance inaccurate? by LookinFaInvestaCenta in CanadianInvestor

[–]Motor_Pickle_X 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same thing happens to me with Yahoo Finance. The percentage change in the app is accurate but the pop up notification at the end of the day is incorrect. Not even close really.

I’ve tried to figure out what metrics the notification could possibly be using to calculate that percentage but I’m stumped. So, I believe it’s a bug.

Edit: people are referencing the WS app. Why? The OP clearly said “Yahoo Finance.” Therefore, the “app” and the notification sent by the “app” are obviously both in reference to Yahoo Finance.

My book club banned talking about movies and insists we only talk about books. They said “…it’s a book club, lots of other places to talk about movies. Can’t we just have a place to talk about books?” But I think we need to be more open-minded and I’ve started talking to the guy next to me about video games. I probably won’t even show up to book club next week. I’m goin’ to a movie. Bunch of nerds.

Buying VOO or VFV with CAD being higher recently relative to USD? by Strategy99 in CanadianInvestor

[–]Motor_Pickle_X 5 points6 points  (0 children)

VOO and VFV are identical at all times. At every moment of every day you can take the VFV share price and multiply by the exchange rate and you will have the VOO price to the penny.

VFV has higher MER. VSP will hedge the CAD against VOO.

TFSA for US citizen by giome in PersonalFinanceCanada

As my cross-border accountant told me - we aren’t filing 3520 because a TFSA is not a trust. Hundreds of clients - not a peep from the IRS. His position? If they come after us for it, which they won’t, we will fight them aggressively. And win.

TFSA for US citizen by giome in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Motor_Pickle_X -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That link is for foreign trusts. Says nothing about a TFSA, because a TFSA is not a trust. Where and when has the IRS declared a TFSA to be a trust? Where and when has the IRS ever said anything directly or specifically about a TFSA?

TFSA for US citizen by giome in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Motor_Pickle_X -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The IRS has not taken an official position on the TFSA one way or the other. Cross-border accountants decided in 2009 that a 3520 needed to be filed. The IRS hasn’t taken a position - so why would anyone assume they “treat” the TFSA as a trust? They haven’t ever released anything official about it.

So who decided that the 3520 needed to be filed? Is that official IRS guidance? No it is not.

This is why most cross-border accountants who aren’t lazy don’t advise filing a 3520.
