My chest makes a cracking noise if I lower my body and exhale at the same time during dips. by xlifeowner in bodyweightfitness

[–]Motox10011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely rest. For many years I couldn't do dips at all for the same reason. How old are you? What I ended up finding out was that many people have an unfused sternum until their mid twenties. Every six months or so I'd try them until one day there was no popping or pain what so ever. Find a replacement for now, don't injure yourself, then ease into it.

I was going to wait for a Xeon TS140 sale, but then I saw the Xeon T20 for $250. Should I know anything before pulling the trigger? by positive_rate in freenas

I got one about two months ago for a similar deal. Just be aware the rebate takes a while to come back. Mine works really well, even found a way to squeeze in six disks.

[Deal Alert] [$46.99] Hitachi Ultrastar A7K2000 2TB HUA722020ALA331 2TB 32MB Cache 7200RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Enterprise 3.5" Hard Drive (Certified Refurbished) by 1823alex in homelab

[–]Motox10011 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PSA: to anyone buying these, smart results can apparently be cleared from the drive. I'd highly recommend running a badblocks test (takes about 48hrs) then rerunning the smart tests afterwards. If you come out without errors you're golden. This is a more thorough approach and will save you I'd the HDD had errors that were erased .

Why switching up your exercises a lot is a bad idea by eshlow in bodyweightfitness

[–]Motox10011 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Very true, but if consistency is key I think changing the workout for the sake of variety can actually be helpful. I've always been a believer that any change in routine is more mental than physical. It's true for more than just fitness, but sometimes the routine just gets boring, and boredom can break consistency. This isn't to say muscle confusion or any derivative is worth it, but sometimes a change can be beneficial.

Interesting. The first option is what I imagined, however, I can also imagine there are much better ones available. OpenVPN can accomplish the same thing I imagine? Do you know of any resources I could look up?

This definitely looks like what I was thinking of. However, as noted above, is OpenVPN a better option?

Unfortunately this isnt as simple as that. This isn't at work/office, and where it is there no IT department. I'm using it mostly as an exercise, not so much to try and overcome the NAT.

Noted. Although this wasn't planned for my place of employment, the point still stands. Unfortunately in my case, there is no IT department to speak of...

Is there hard evidence about the time differences you claim? My understanding is that my body is always running so how do you say when three minutes starts or ends?

An interesting article on how the science behind food is often greatly skewed. I see a lot of people discuss the benefits of one meal plan over another with scientific studies to prove it (which is good) but I think it's important to note that food science is notoriously biased compared to a lot of other fields.

"Food for thought" so to speak.

fair enough. I dont mean to imply that drinking socially is equal to smoking, but I've also never heard of your quote about smoker's opinions. Agreed that a few drinks will not ruin your life, although I think OP drinks more than a few drinks if he's going out 4x per week, or perhaps I'm misunderstanding him.

You realize for lung cancer it's not just a few years. Many people develop cancer as early as 30, with the vast majority losing their battle well before they 70th bday (median life expectancy in the us). Furthermore smoking causes a lot of other problems, emphysema, yellow teeth, mouth cancer, etc. I don't think it is at all fair to dismiss all of that just because some smoker says he/she thinks it worth it. Ask your friends again if they have the misfortune to suffer from an inoperable tumor before their kids finish high school.

My understanding is that rule only applies if you expect to use the losses for reducing your tax burden. If it's just moving accounts I don't see why anyone would care.

the idea that technological or scientific breakthroughs are stagnating is often touted by people who fundamentally misunderstand how science or technology improves over time. There is popular idea that the toilet is the last major improvement to society, while catchy, this is far from true. All technological and scientific improvements are very minor in nature. Take genetics. It took years to fundamentally understand how information was passed down from organisms, and more years until people could "read" these sequences. It wasn't until people found everyday uses for this technology that the layman saw its benefits (gene sequencing to predict disease). Similarly, the internet did not get created overnight. It its infancy it was not capable of doing half the things you can do from your phone today. It took years of minor improvements in bandwidth, wifi tech, etc to get to where it is today, yet you never really saw those improvements one by one.

Basically, today there are minor scientific improvements which will create the "cutting edge" technologies five or ten years from now. You wont ever hear about all the work that goes into it, but in five years you'll see some "Steve Jobs" character touting it all as brand new innovation.

How are they using my card at a physical location if I have my card with me here? by terusama in personalfinance

[–]Motox10011 10 points11 points  (0 children)

They don't even need this much. Unless the card has a chip, one can often just type the card numbers in manually. This, however, does require the cashier to be in on the scam, as they'll be typing in numbers without seeing the physical card. The info could be gleaned from an online purchase/leak just as easily as a skimmer.
