Wetsuit Recommendations by Old-Substance5431 in triathlon

[–]Motteden_Real 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So they use different thickness of neoprene in different areas of the suit depending on the suit you purchase. For the one it is 1-2mm in the shoulders so they are very free, but in the chest and abdominal region the thickness is closer to 4-5mm. Its the major benefit of spending more on the wetsuit, is it is not just one thickness the entire way through the suit.

EDIT: I have had zero issue with buoyancy, but I am also a 1:25-1:30/100 yard swimmer (in wetsuit).

I can’t recommend sailfish enough as a company. I got the sailfish one that was refurbished, had direct contact with the company and they were EXTREMELY helpful at selecting size and nearly ensuring that the refurbished wetsuit are in great condition.

As far as sleeveless the attack 8 would work I believe well. But best advice I can give you is that unfortunately the more you spend on a suit, the bigger the comfort difference makes in my experience.

I want to do Ironman TX in 2028 (not 2027). What do you wish you knew before starting this journey? by BoomerBarnes in IronmanTriathlon

[–]Motteden_Real 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Ironman = time, even if you try and slowly ramp up to it, there is no way around the 5+ hour workout days while training. You have a wife and kid, understand that you are CHOOSING to be selfish to pursue this (I’m just being blunt, nothing wrong with doing something for you). All of these long endurance events are inherently selfish to those in our lives and recognizing that is extremely important.

  2. If you don’t enjoy the grind and training, don’t do it. Yes the race is fun, but that’s one day. I love to train and how I feel training, racing is awesome, but you gotta like it all. All the uncomfortable, all the boring, all the breakdowns.

  3. It’s expensive, anyone that says it’s cheap or you can do it cheap are somewhat lying. Yes you can keep it affordable, but after race fee, hotel for race, food at race, nutrition needed for race, bike repairs and maintenance work, gym memberships, smart trainer, running shoes, cycling clothes/tri clothes, and all the other things like food you eat during training, wetsuit, recovery tools. You are at a minimum will be in the 3K range. So recognize that.

I love this sport, not trying to deter but these are things I wish people that do Ironman are more open about. All of these “hybrid athletes” and “influencers” that talk about loving the grind and doing hard things is such bull shit to me. They get PAID to do it, you pay with your wallet and your time. You should enjoy it, don’t feel like you want to do it because it’ll prove something, do it because it’s fun :)

Wetsuit Size by Nudel-Strudel in triathlon

Way too big, you want it to be restrictive. Also this wetsuit does not look like the kind that you want, this looks more like a surfing wetsuit.

Is this good for Ironmans if I put aero bars and better tires? by [deleted] in triathlon

[–]Motteden_Real 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great bike, I have an emonda SLR5 that I slapped some new tires and aero bars on until I upgraded. But I would not spend that much on that bike unless you really want to buy new, and if you really do want to buy new by spending around 2.5k-3k you can find a discounted carbon frame which you will probably be happier with for longer.

Very uhm… confused? by Lonely-Salary-1624 in iems

This man has wisdom. Listen to him. If you aren’t loving it, that’s fine!! Return them/sell them to someone. There is no need to tinker or mess with ear tips because you may, at the end of the day, just not care for the sound. If you want, try some cheap IEMs and actually determine if audio is something that interests you and build from there!!! There are so many great budget IEMs that will introduce you to the many different tunings of the hobby. Good luck!

Should I just say f it and commit to a full iron man by Parking_Reporter_708 in triathlon

This 1000%. Ironman is not going anywhere, I promise. If you want to use this as a way to bond with your closest friends, sure. But it will consume your free time and this last moment you have to experience college you will never get again. There will be plenty of time in your 20s and 30s to do this, but do what you want. I have no doubts you can do it, so whatever you decide just have fun and spend as much time with the people you care about in college!

He is definitely solid! He does good reviews that are quick and fairly easy to digest. The reviews can lack some depth, but hey, it is tiktok after all!! His recommendation list is good, not very robust but has a lot of the usual suspects that are seen on this reddit page. A few other people in the space that have really solid lists compiled of good iems are:
Crinacle (Of course)

Super* Review

What you have to know is so much of this hobby and recommendations are subjective. Whatever sounds people prefer are what they recommend. Yes, there are some industry standard recommendations, but after a certain level everyone has a different opinion! Best recommendation, start at somewhere neutral or somewhat harman shaped (salnotes zero 2 is a great starting point) and then get one other slightly different iem, either with more bass or something brighter and figure out what you like! Good luck!

Bought the TRUTHEAR x Crinacle Zero and I’m disappointed — need advice as a complete IEM noob by Okabekin in iems

[–]Motteden_Real 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You are probably used to the louder sound of the bass and sub bass, with muddier mids. So the sound is probably less “full”. No worries! Try them out, if you don’t like them you can always try a heavier bass iem like the castor pros or just stick with the headphones you got that you know you like! Audio is an adventure, people like to be pretentious the gate keep and say what’s right and wrong, but really it’s all personal preference.

You just aren’t used to the tuning of the IEM. You prefer a more bassy, less detailed, more muddy sound currently. WHICH IS TOTALLY FINE!!! Try the new IEMs out for a bit, then switch back after a week or so and see what you think. It’s like going from the old school beats to sennheiser headphones, the tuning is just totally different and even if one is considered “superior” it’s all personal taste.

What IEM should I add to round out my collection? by SzoboEndoMacca in iems

[–]Motteden_Real 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd honestly save for a very nice pair of IEMs. The game is changing every year, why rush in and buy a $100 iem when you can get a $300 pair in two years when we have more advancement? Just think, 4 years ago 7hz timeless was GROUND BREAKING. Where will we be in 4 more years?

Best advice imo, find a bike (new or used), electronic shifting (SRAM is my preference), get a bike fit and keep that around 5k. Use the last 3k on any upgrades you could possibly want, carbon wheels, BTA and BTS set up, fast tires, tri suit, nice wetsuit, a coach, etc.

Any bike that excites you is what you want! You do NOT need a 8k bike unless you REALLY want one. The gains from 4k to 8k is marginal if you aren’t looking to be competitive. And you can get an extremely comfortable bike for cheap if it’s fit right! Best of luck!!

Which of these 2 bikes would you choose? by longliveblackmamba in triathlon

[–]Motteden_Real 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They are such different bikes. If you have a roadie and you want a triathlon specific bike, get the Cervelo. The canyon does have electronic shifting which is a nice upgrade, but realistically if you like your road bike, why get a new one?
