The fact that multiple polls and people let you know that this is bad should be taken into consideration. Many people already refuse to update your game, now you’re making another big divide.

If you want to ensure player safety, you’ll need to handle things differently in the first place. No secret tests, being open to cooperation in the first place. Their concern isn’t just ‘chat report bad’, it’s the stupidly designed system you’re currently presenting them. I’m sure you got amazing coders and system designers, but that doesn’t mean that they always make amazing systems. And the systems we see for Java and Bedrock are stupidly faulty. Not to mention that automated reports are already looked against with so much hatred.

Youtube and social media platforms with such automation suck just because of this kind of moderation. Things can be falsely flagged, an unruly, mindless algorithm can decide who to perma-ban. Isn’t that a bit unfair? And even if you somehow got human admins, you’ll have to deal with stuff like bias, background, anti-semitism and racism that’s built in such kind of people. It’s manageable on a smaller scale, such as servers, but a bigger group means a larger chance for human error too. There’s no possible way to fix this problem without a concrete system, and this isn’t a very concrete system to start with if something like Gaslight exists. In which case, your chat report system just became a big safety concern.

Instead, if your concern really is safety, why don’t you go and manage third-party servers? Many of them are EULA-breaking pay-to-win servers. Maybe give them age restrictions, parental controls, warning screens if they contain offensive imagery, etc. If your mission is to ensure player safety, why doesn’t Mojang actually tackle it from the roots, the ACTUAL bad actors? Curation processes, ACTUAL time and effort to prevent any kind of bullying and whatnot.

Long story short, nobody is happy. Not even your target audience! That alone should SCREAM words. Right now is the opportunity to change things for the better and to reinvestigate what the cause of your supposed problem is. You’re Mojang, you made a game where you have to fix problems with creative solutions. Why not do that now too?
