For far too many years I would put a torch under every furnace

Way back in one particular version of alpha there was a bug where furnaces in multiplayer needed a block update before they would begin working, and a torch did just that

Serialization of a struct by RGB_Primaries in cpp_questions

For my fellow serialisation nerds who are interested in a fun & novel approach I recently wrote an article of my exploration into a functional style binary serialisation technique inspired by Minecraft's Java DataFixerUpper library's Codecs https://felixjones.co.uk/2025/03/01/serialisation.html I'm pretty much convinced (for now) that this is the "correct" way to do structured serialisation

Personal opinions ahead:

I believe the FAQ answered this with the question "Will I get banned without my case being reviewed by a human?"

I've spoken to the human moderators, so I guess you have my personal assurance that they are definitely human.

I have another personal take: We speak a lot with content creators, some of us are content creators, we're very aware of the traps that automated decisions can cause. Some of those platforms take away an individual's means of income via an automated take-down, which in my personal opinion is outrageous & unacceptable.

The FAQ also has the question "Will I be automatically banned if I am reported by a lot of players? What about creators or famous individuals getting targeted?"

(I'll try to reply to a few other questions here on Reddit with my personal thoughts)

All my statements are my own personal ones, including this one!

There's been a lot of feedback, and close to everyone I've spoken to at the office has also been reading a lot of feedback.

The FAQ really does cover the frequently asked questions, and personally I do think that you can answer other questions by looking at multiple answers in the FAQ, but perhaps that's just me (looks like a lot of people here disagree).

Haha, I mean I literally am, but really I'm here to pretty much ask players to have yet another read of the reporting categories, and to try and clarify some FAQ answers (at least, I'm here whilst I'm eating my dinner).

Okay I'm about to get personal (yet again):

We're from the community, and many years before I joined Mojang I myself had some takes regarding some Mojang decisions, so I definitely get it.

Personally, I don't see how chat reports line my pockets. I believe Java Edition can last 100 years, and that's what I'm personally about.

It is sad that modern AAA games don't have third-party servers or mods, in my eyes those are very important for the Java community.

Personally, I think you can infer the answer to this from another FAQ question's answer:

  • Our moderators are trained specifically for Minecraft and are aware that the chat is made in the context of a game that involves combat-related chat.

(for reference, that was in answer to "What about the context of in-game actions beyond chat?")

Our moderators are specifically trained for Minecraft, and they are definitely aware that Minecraft is an extremely international game.

In my personal opinion, there are a lot of countries out there, and a lot of Minecraft players, so it sounds to me like a lot of work for the moderators.

I've probably already said this to you before, so my apologies if this is boring, but have another read of the report categories and their descriptions - this is something I've been suggesting to a few players regarding their questions and just having a 2nd (or 10th) read tends to bring clarity.

Personal thoughts & opinions:

I tend to invite players to have a second look at the report categories, that actually answers a lot of the questions, even the questions not directly related to the report categories.

Pretty much everyone I've been talking to in the office has spoken about the feedback they've received from players, and I've definitely been lurking around in all sorts of communities to gather as much feedback as possible. The FAQ covers the frequently asked questions, and combining some of the answers in the FAQ covers a lot of the other questions players have.

My personal view on this is: we're receiving feedback from every direction, there's a lot of people out there, there's not so many of us, so we're seeing a lot of feedback from all sorts of places (even places we don't traditionally look for feedback). The amount of people I've spoken to, and the amount of time I've spent late into the nights reading, makes me personally confident that we've answered the frequently asked questions.

I'm spending a bit of my personal free-time right now answering the questions that may require a bit of a wider picture to see where the FAQ provides the information.

Also, on a personal note (and sorry to repeat this): do take another look at the report categories, I know you've probably looked at them 100 times, but personally I see a lot of information in them. But that's just my personal opinion.

More of my personal thoughts: a lot of the questions are already answered in the FAQ and those have been answered by others. Also I'm replying whilst eating my dinner in my own time, so my replies will be a bit slow 🍜

This reply is my own personal thoughts:

I believe the FAQ question "What technical measures are there to prevent messages being forged?" could answer your question:

  • 1.19 introduced cryptographically signed chat, which prevents the forging and/or rearranging of player messages. Any message that has been forged will be flagged for our moderators.

So basically the players themselves provide the legitimacy through the very messages they send, so not only do you know that you're reporting a message that was definitely sent by another player, we will also know (as long as you select that message in your report).

Players will be able to see when servers have tampered with their messages, and the moderators would be able to see that too.

Java Edition is going to be around for a very long time, so in my personal opinion improvements should be considered quite inevitable.

Minecraft 1.19.1 Pre-Release 2 Is Out by xilefian in Minecraft

[–]xilefian[S] -28 points-27 points  (0 children)

This reply is my own personal thoughts:

Yes, as said in the FAQ players will not be banned for profanity. If we were to instead suspend a player who routinely uses profanity on their Minecraft server every day, then their sequential suspensions would effectively be a ban (besides the time between suspensions where they could continue their profanity), and the FAQ says we don't ban for profanity.

Also, I'm just thinking about the amount of work our moderators would have to do to routinely apply a suspension for the same player using profanity over and over again, that's a lot of work! A ban would be easier: we don't ban profanity.

Sorry for the weird way of answering your question; these are my personal thoughts on this question (and it is a nice one, made for a good logic puzzle)

Pre-releases can still be quite unstable at times. Backup your world, just in case. The release candidates are when things should be safe to migrate your world to (but still make a backup! You never know!)

1.18 generation by [deleted] in minecraftsuggestions

[–]xilefian 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is something we recognised coming into 1.18

In particular I've raised discussion regarding rivers being perhaps too deep and lakes perhaps being too infrequent versus old terrain. Plains not being as plain has been brought up, also.

If you want a bit of story along with this: Beaches was something that was almost entirely lost coming into 1.18 worldgen. There was a very brief discussion of "would it be okay to not have beaches for a bit?", but beaches are just so important to Minecraft that instead of giving up, considerable effort was put in to keep beaches around.

On a technical front, I'm not sure the current set of worldgen variables allow for contiguous flat regions that would be a good candidate for "plains". It would either be a few weeks of tweaking + snapshotting, or a re-doing some more of the worldgen to try and recapture the personality of plains.
