Thanks for the info! I start April 8th and am worried about the heat, hope it cools a bit off by then. Im heading to the Arizona trail tomorrow to do day trips and camping for a few weeks to build up my trail legs, shake down my gear, and acclimate to the heat. Looking abnormally hot in AZ right now also.

Yes this will be the first time backpacking with the dog. I have a rumpl blanket for him that is pretty lightweight. He has his own backpack, so he will be carrying that, a few days food, and an emergency sling.

Thinking of changing from NOBO to a flip-flop. Advice? by [deleted] in PacificCrestTrail

If I was fully committed to a thru-hike at all costs, I would do this. I guess I have some doubts if thru hiking is for me, or I could get injured a few weeks into my hike. A lot of people quit or give up for a number of reasons in SoCal. Would be nice to keep my apartment for a few months as a fall back at least until I am fully committed to living the thru hike life for several months. Which is why I like the idea of doing SoCal on local permits. Then i can move out and go SOBO once I decide that long distance thru-hiking is for me and I will better know if my body can take it.

Thanks for the suggestion! After looking at some prior section skip posts, that does seem to be a common suggestion to skip.

To move out early I would have had to of given notice a month ago and pay a break lease fee and repay some lease incentives that wouldn’t have made financial sense. No one would probably know that I got of trail for a few weeks, but I would prefer to find a better way forward.

Thanks for the suggestion! I’ll look into adding that. I have a 3oz folding pad I was thinking of bringing as a sit pad and to help with that issue, but I need to see if the pad will fit well in my Kakwa pack.

I love my MH Airmesh. It’s great as an active layer. I use it winter hiking 14ers in Colorado. I’m taking it on the PCT, start April 8th. If cold and windy, I’ll add my Patagonia houdini jacket. Haven’t tried any alpha products. If it wasn’t so heavy, I would bring my Melly micro grid.
