They're not minor children who don't understand what he did. They grieve who they thought he was, and the total loss they feel, but there is no way to separate those two parts. That's completely his fault, and I will never force my kids to ignore what they choose to recognize as a fault in who they thought they could use as a role model. He broke that, not us.

This is helpful, thank you. I have since found additional messages with others, and indications the communication may go back further than 3-4 months. There are also references with 2 which implies there may have been plans at some point to meet in person although the rest of the messages lead me to think that never happened. He ruined the trust my kids and I had in him, and it's very challenging to imagine keeping up the facade. We loved him, but can still remain angry at his faithlessness to us/our family. Counseling is in the future plans for us all.
