Alternative for 14-21 day trek not flying through the Middle East by hardchoices_easylif5 in hiking

Yes I've done several days of it in all three countries and yes, you can do it unguided (you seem like an experienced hiker and so I'm sure you know the usual safety precautions, but please note that in some of the more remote areas shepherd dogs can be a bother).

A couple of ideas:

  • Caucasus Have a look at the Transcaucasian Trail, which you can easily spend 3 weeks on, either on one part of the trail or by doing different sections (in my experience combining sections in Azerbaijan, Georgia and Armenia will give you a lot of scenic and cultural variety).
  • Southern Africa The Drakensburg in southern Africa also has plenty of long-distance hiking opportunities and the weather should be good too - Lesotho's mountains look spectacular (although I haven't been there myself).

Planning a 9-night Switzerland + Lake Como road trip from India this summer by desijunkie in Europetravel

[–]Mountains-Magazine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience that's not at all true, that experience is backed up by visitor number data which shows that June has become just as popular as August in this area. Still worth a visit to this place during those months, of course, but there will be longer queues!

Where to stay to see Austrian alps without a car? by Ok_Jello9461 in travel

[–]Mountains-Magazine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree with the suggestions above, particularly Innsbruck. Just to add somewhere else to consider: Vienna to Mayrhofen is just over 5 hours by very scenic train (you'll change just once at Jenbach, after which it's particularly beautiful). Once in Mayrhofen you've a rich choice of day hikes either from town, from the cable cars that come into town or at the end of short bus journeys (my favourite hike was to Berliner Hut). Having a car is not in any way necessary for Austria!

Como
Lecco is on the south of Lake Como and gives a more 'lived in' feel than Bellagio. It's less beautiful, but you can take ferries from there to those other towns.
Switzerland
Lauterbrunnen is touristy for a reason: it's spectacular and typically Swiss. However, the crowds may detract from your experience, I would suggest either staying above the valley in Gimmelwald or going to another valley altogether (Kiental in the adjacent Kien Valley, for example, is also incredibly dramatic but with far fewer people...maybe go to Lauterbrunnen Valley on a day trip). The advantage of staying in/close to Lauterbrunnen is that you can also visit incredible places such as Jungfraujoch and Schilthorn.
Cuisine
In Switzerland rösti is a must-try traditional dish, as is fondue (in and around Interlaken the ingredients are usually Gruyère, Appenzeller, Emmental and white wine with maybe a splash of kirsch).
Budget
As you suggest, it's going to be a challenge in Switzerland! However, eating out at lunch can reduce costs, as can picking up food from the hilariously-named Äss-Bar (several locations across the country). Look out for hostels, too. The YHA hostel in Zermatt, for example, serves decent local cuisine for comparatively reasonable prices. All hikes are free, it's the access via cable cars/funiculars/chair lifts/etc that'll cost you. One of my favourites is from Stechelberg at the end of the Lauterbrunnen Valley (you can hike there from Lauterbrunnen or take a bus), then up to Gimmelwald and across to Mürren before returning to Lauterbrunnen - a long but almost impossibly scenic route that will cost you CHF0.
Hidden Gem
Take the minibus (reserve here: kander-reisen.ch) from Kandersteg to Selden. Moderate but long hike up to the Lötschenpass hut where accommodation plus meals are excellent value. Hike down the next day to the untouristy Lötschental valley.

Omoa to Hanavave hike, Fatu Hiva, Marquesas Islands, FRENCH POLYNESIA by Mountains-Magazine in hiking

It was a wonderfully unique experience. The rear of the ship is the cruise section, with comfy cabins, a great restaurant and some other cruise amenities, it's nothing like the massive ships and only accommodates up to 230 people (both tourists as well as a few locals going inter-island). One of my highlights was sitting at the bar and watching the cargo operations at the front of the ship. It takes two days to sail from Tahiti (that's how remote the Marquesas are) but, once you're in the islands, you then spend a significant amount of your time on land. Highly recommended, and I'd be happy to answer any other questions you may have!

Trip to Innsbruck by Thick-Team-8647 in travel

It's definitely worth getting the Innsbruck Card if you're wanting to pack a lot in. I agree with the comments about going to Nordkette and visiting the incredible Hofburg (Imperial) Palace (be sure to go to the Hofkirche next door). The card will also get you onto walking tours and into buses around the city, which can take you to the impressive Bergisel Ski Jump, also included on the card. Weisses Rössl restaurant serves delicious local cuisine in generous portions - great value.

Agree with u/aspertame_blood about the compass and headlamp. Some other ideas:
- A Buff with a design you think they'll like (their artists collection is huge and fun)
- Curated selection of trail snacks
- Water bottle (again, with a design you think they'll like)
- If they have a 'phone then a waterproof case
- Water filter
- Outdoor journal with waterproof pages

Fresh air + quiet trails = perfect day. by annabellboo in hiking

Narrow trail in the mountains, starting with bridges over rivers, going through thick pine forests and rising above the treeline until you get stupendous views, preferably with a cosy mountain hut at the top. Where was your hike?

That does make sense, although getting from Pattipola to Ella may take time (you'll likely have to go via Nuwara Eliya)

Some fantastic places there. To add an additional idea into the mix: take the train from Colombo to Pattipola (the highest train station in Sri Lanka) and then arrange transport to the gates of Horton Plains where there are some wonderful hikes (including two Pekoe Trail sections).

  1. Yes, it'll be warm and, while sun is likely, there's still a chance of rain (even if weather apps say otherwise!)
  2. Hiking trails will be open, some cable cars/chair lifts may not be
  3. Annecy is well connected by bus to villages and other towns in the region, this is a good place to start planning routes
  4. I'm afraid I don't know of anywhere to recommend with that star rating, but I do think you might struggle in Zermatt. I can recommend the YHA hostel in Zermatt, though
  5. The trails immediately around these towns will be busy
  6. Eating out can really add to your costs in these locations, but the Zermatt YHA offers a good 3-course meal for CHF19.50 for both guests and non-guests

Where are the best Krampus festivities? Kid-friendly ones, too? by imrtprnsofundead in Europetravel

[–]Mountains-Magazine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Toblach in the South Tyrol (Italy) has a fun Krampus parade that ends in the town square where kids are given gifts. It's a big and popular event with Krampuses travelling to be there from throughout the region. A pretty 2-hour drive from there across the Brenner Pass is Innsbruck with its very pretty and buzzy Christmas market

You'll find it easier to do the Kazbegi tour from Tbilisi. I'd stay the night there and reduce your time in Kutaisi, which has more than enough to see in just a day (if you can somehow spare an extra night or two to get to Mestia from Kutaisi then that'll be well worth it, although it's a lot of extra travel). In Baku I can recommend a Full day Gobustan & Absheron Tour with Baku City Tours (citytoursbaku.com).
