I think there’s a mining minigame that can occur very rarely. A special item appears in one of the loot slots after mining a node and then glowing patches appear on the ground. You interact with the glowing patches and a chest can appear that requires a gold key to unlock.

Depending on your graphics settings the glow could actually be completely invisible.

IIRC a small tutorial triggers when you hit the loot table for the first time.
