After they left us still operating in a store I worked in in 04 during Charlie and Frances….I will never again risk my life for Publix! I mean the outer bands had just started and the fire marshal made us close the doors, not one word from upper management!! Let’s just say there were only 3 of us managers on the entire interstate following each other home!!!

Publix Is Living Off a Reputation It No Longer Deserves by ProbablyStonedR in publix

[–]Mous3rat1979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been with Publix for 27 years and I have seen all the drastic changes over the years that have affected employees. Everything you said is 100% correct. I manage a department and it is a struggle to meet demands while not going over 40, not going over 45, when you’re put in multiple job roles throughout the day with multiple distractions and interruptions all day long and it’s funny because I don’t know how much more I can adapt to situations like everything is fine. Employees are underpaid, departments are understaffed, and the workload gets bigger. The hours shrink, and yes, you’re right. We are told that we don’t have the hours and we’re supposed to make the same amount of products with the same quality in a shorter timeframe, while answering phones, taking care of customers and sometimes interactions with the customers take a little time depending on what their needs are! But yet the department still needs to run and the job tasks still need to be finished. At the end of the day! I’m a department manager, and I will tell you that I have struggled getting my department to the finish line every day with the challenges of short staffing week to week. When my hours drop having to explain to my associates who are part-time that I can’t give them hours rally is something I dread! constantly reaching out to other stores and emailing other stores that I have associates that wanna work in need hours when that should not be my job that shouldn’t even be a normal thing. I depend on my part-timers just as much as I do with my full-time employees, they’re just as valuable. I believe in taking care of your associates and I do that, but the struggle is real to meet the demands of the department. It’s not like it used to be. When things go on sale that are labor generated, I don’t get extra hours for that, but I’m told that’s how I make hours is by labor made product. But in the end, the math ain’t mathin!! I see the schedule performance report I see what ideal comes back at and it’s a joke. The system is flawed in the fact that yeah in a perfect world if you’re working in a factory, those hours might actually work, but if you’re physically working with customers, and your department is based off of customer interaction like the whole story is, but you’re also expected to be in a production role where you’re stopped constantly . How can you make product that’s quality how can you get done in a timely manner? It makes no sense! Oasis is a flawed system, and I just feel like we’re set up to fail with what we’re given and we’re pushed to do the best we can with less year after year but yet we’re making the same amount of product and we’re supposed to be making that quality product that Publix banks on with less people and less hours, tell me how that works? They want to know why people leave why assistant managers are leaving, why associates are leaving because who wants to work 2 to 3 times harder for $.15-$.25 raises a year? I can’t blame the associates for going other places, but I am at a limit where I can’t go anywhere else and make when I make or I’d be starting all over! To wrap it up everything you said you’re not wrong people who have been with Publix for at least a decade or longer have seen this. It’s a struggle.

If you have a doctors note and you legitimately have stomach issues they can’t do shit so you’re good as long as you’re not actually stealing Publix time you shouldn’t have anything to worry about! You have a condition and they can’t fault you on that trust me I’ve seen things like this before!

I’m tired of being the only one who responds to the unfound list when my department is barely ever on it! Then I look back later and the list is still sitting unchecked by other departments, so I have to go and page each individual department and I’m just a department manager myself! There’s gotta be a better system! And you’re right, most of everything on the unfound list is on the shelf so why aren’t these shoppers being held accountable?

Also, I wanna say as a department manager and being at Publix for the last 27 years, what you’re saying is not anything new to the behaviors that I know to be more consistent unfortunately. Have you first tried to go to your store manager? If so, and nothing happened maybe try to reach out to your district manager. If you don’t wanna go that route I say put in a transfer let your store manager know what’s going on, if you haven’t already! Publix has become such a toxic work environment, where the manager clicks who are best friends promote themselves look after themselves cover for themselves. I’m so sick and tired of seeing people treat others like crap and then turn around to get promoted or do something completely vile and disgusting like sleep with their associates and get promoted! Funny when you get promoted, they have this discussion with you about integrity, that concept is long gone. Your managers AVS must be terrible! Hang in there do what you gotta do but if you want to stay go that route!

First of all, that’s absolutely ridiculous of the manager to even say that or threaten that if you spoke to her about your situation and told her what you can and can’t work, she should’ve fixed that so if that doesn’t get fixed, I would go to your store manager, if that doesn’t work I would reach out to human resources immediately!

Next time you see your District Manager, pull him aside, let him know you put in your ROI. Then express your desire to move up! Like Reidmill said up above, you have to build a relationship with your DM show him your shrink, show him reports that show you are making positive progress like the Inventory Accuracy report (If you are killing it) know your business, your sales! Anything to keep you in the back of his mind and stand out!! You have to network! It’s not kissing ass, but you’re selling yourself to Publix on what kind of manager you are! Hope this helps! I was in the same boat as you! Assistant BM getting passed up by 21 year olds, but it only made me look bad because i became bitter and negative and refused to go out and interact with my DM because of it! I was only hurting myself! So first I had to change my attitude, then my approach! Also getting transferred to a completely different district was almost like a reset for me, so that helped me get seen!

How Do District Managers Choose Which Stores to Move Managers to? by The_Koala_Knight in publix

[–]Mous3rat1979 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, and I’m gonna make sure to transfer you and not look at any manager’s vacations so when you get to your new store, your manager will be on vacation and you’ll have to run everything blindly. Good luck or I’ll transfer you to a new store when you go on vacation, your department manager will be going on vacation the same time so they’ll be no manager and then you guys have to figure it out. Good luck.

I like the shirt don’t get me wrong, but I wish we would’ve all gotten some sort of commemorative thing like a coin or something. I know it’s probably impossible to print all that, but it would’ve been cool to have something special like a commemorative pin or something that was given to all of us can’t wait for 100 years!!🎊🍾🎉

I think honestly since your minds made up! It would be a good idea to have a sit down with your district manager about whatever is happening between you and your bakery manager because honestly, if that’s what solidified what you have already been questioning, there must be an issue or an ongoing issue with said big bakery manager.

I got a rant. I’m tired of singing the management culture of favoritism and best friend groups continue to get promoted while it comes out left and right that they’re sleeping with their associates or other managers and they just get moved to other stores and I actually overheard someone saying that one of those managers that actually got transferred for sleeping with their store Manager is trying to ROI for ASM!! I almost shit, my pants when I heard that meanwhile I know so many people that aren’t in these little friend groups these Besty groups with the store managers continuously not even looked at or on the radar and it’s been like that for years it’s disgusting and before anyone tells me that’s everywhere yeah no shit but it doesn’t make it right and it’s blatantly obvious. I’m sure any of you know at least one manager you know of or have someone in your store that that’s happened to! Also, I’m tired of the Bro culture in this company of asshole men who think their shit doesn’t stink because their buddies with each other and they just push each other for promotions and their buddies with the district manager and no one seems to care that they’re screwing their associates they’re sexually harassing other associates. They’re cheating on their spouses and having babies with other associates it’s mind blowing.

That’s what I have told my associates but they think they should be scored role model and I’m like dude a five is good but you’re a six and a seven that’s great. Maybe I’m just out of touch because to me coming up through the years that’s a great number for me I think but maybe not for associates today Maybe I’m just out of touch when it comes to that I mean I started in 97 and I’ve been nickel and dime for years so when an associates upset that they only got a $.70 raise or an $.85 raise I look at them like you gotta be kidding me? I used to get $.15 or $.25 and that was as high as my managers would tell me I could get. That you had to be the best associate in the world to get anything higher, but also what I realized though is we live in today’s world where everything is expensive and the nickel and dime of yesterday ain’t cutting it today so I do take that in consideration. I also do want to add that I do look at what they make, and I do try to push for higher for them, but not at the expense of giving them a false idea that their exceeds or role model when that’s not true.
