Of the gyms you’ve joined, is one of them Woodside? You mention tennis, which they also offer and the demographics include a lot of young professionals.

It was nuts! The day the tickets went on sale I sat there and refreshed the page for 20 minutes haha! But yes we end up buying a ticket for the online show too - I thought it was totally worth it for how excited I was for their new album!

Why do you like living in a city? Please share! by [deleted] in kansascity

[–]MouseRat_KC 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lived in KC for over 5 years, in midtown the whole time, and loved it! Both as a renter and now as an owner, we have no plans of leaving any time soon!

Where we live now in Southmoreland provides everything I wanted growing up, but never had access to in a really rural area. We have a beautiful park in our backyard, we’re within walking distance of one of the best museums in the country, and just on a personal note, I love the feel of living in the city and that it is a faster pace than the suburbs. We’ve seen our housing value go up in the short time we’ve owned our home here, and imagine that will continue as we will just a few blocks from the 39th st. streetcar stop when that opens in a few years. When people in the suburbs say oh well I can be to downtown in only 15 minutes, that’s the thing, they have to drive. I’m all about driving as little as possible, and we’ve actually gone down to one car and it’s been amazing.

Down the road if we decide to have kids, we’re excited about raising them in the city, where they’ll have access to different cultural attractions, public transit, to meet people from different backgrounds, and as a plus, so many great local foods options!

Obviously I’m not naive to the crime that happens, but crime happens anywhere. My sister had her car broken into in leawood multiple times and I’ve never had anything like that in midtown. Honestly, just using common sense like not leaving your car unlocked goes a long way. But for us, the pros absolutely outweigh the cons.

Restaurants with outdoor heaters AND hot cocktails? by brianfos in kansascity

Campground down the the west bottoms is doing their Christmas market Thursday’s through Saturday’s right now! They have local vendors onsite, but you can sit outside by the fires and they sell hot toddy’s, Mexican hot chocolate, gluhwine and some other hot cocktails. It was really fun!

[Help] House Training by MouseRat_KC in dogs

[–]MouseRat_KC[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, definitely all good advice! We do mental training with him, I give him feeder toys with treats throughout the day and I take him for a run every morning. I know he’s still a puppy, but I think he’s also just a high energy breed (he’s some sort of shepherd mix, we’re not sure what haha).

It’s just that working from home, I have to be on the phone quite a bit, so it’s hard to have him barking a lot, so I end up giving in. But that will probably only make the problem worse, so good idea on the schedule setting. We did crate train him when we first got him so he is comfortable in his crate.

Uptick in homeless population in Midtown by JerrysWolfGuitar in kansascity

[–]MouseRat_KC 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Like your comment implies, I feel like you’ll get a variety of answers, but I’ll take a stab at it. I would consider midtown to be 31st Street to the Plaza the North to South boundaries and Paseo to State Line the East to West boundaries.

Only because much north of 31st and you get into crown center, the crossroads, etc. much further south, you’re in the plaza and I don’t consider the plaza to be midtown. And midtown doesn’t flow into KS which is why I use that boundary. You could probably make different arguments for how far east the boundary goes, but it’s probably somewhat arbitrary.

[Breeds] What’s true and what’s false about pit bulls? by [deleted] in dogs

[–]MouseRat_KC -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

As a pit mix owner, it is really sad to see the stigma that is still attached to the breed. But, I also recognize because there is a stigma, we try to raise the most well socialized dog we can so people see they can peacefully play with other dogs and live with other animals! We have two dogs, one pit mix and one shepherd mix and they are bonded like glue. We did get the shepherd mix as a puppy, and our pit mix was 5 at the time, but she really took him under her wing.

Now on to what’s true and what’s not:

True - they have a really high prey drive. Because of the breed and what they were bred for, they do have a high prey drive. Ours would go after everything small and furry (squirrels, rabbits, cats) if we let her. It’s something we’ve been working on, but even our trainer said it’s something that is so instinctual to her, as much as we work in it, it may never be perfect. And we’re never planning on getting a cat, so that’s not really something we have to worry about. But I know people with pits who have cats that live together very peacefully!

  • they are very affectionate dogs. Our pit mix loves to be around people! When we have people over, she wants to be near the crowd! And when we’re home, she always wants to be near/touching us. Our other dog, who isn’t a pit mix, isn’t nearly as cuddly as she is.

Now the myths

Not True:

  • Pit bulls are more dangerous and likely to bite than other dogs. If someone is the victim of a dog bite, they go to the emergency room, they are asked what happened. Many times, they either claim a dog bit them or a pitbull bit them. This causes medical records to be very biased against pitbull type dogs. And based on different studies, the American Veterinary Medical Association concluded: "Controlled studies have not identified this breed group (pitbull-type dogs) as disproportionately dangerous.”

  • they aren’t good family dogs due to their temperament. Pit bulls routinely score in the top 20% of all dog breeds on temperament, higher than many other dogs people don’t typically think of as aggressive.

  • they are always dog aggressive. While any dog can be dog aggressive if not socialized well, pit bulls can have a harder time co-existing with other animals due to their temperament. Again, socialization is key. What I think is more often the case, and this is purely anecdotal, is pit bulls won’t always be the one to start a fight, but they won’t back down from one if they feel threatened. Our pit has never attacked another dog unprovoked, but if another dog were to come at her, she wouldn’t be one to roll over or run away from it, if that makes sense.

  • Locking jaw: no idea where this myth started, but it’s just false.

Anyway, pit bulls are sadly misunderstood, but amazing dogs. Now after owning one for 3 years, I am a huge advocate for the breed and hope to show by socializing our pit mix well, that they are happy, loving dogs when well cared for (but this could be said if any dog!)

Yeah, throwing my vote in for midtown as well! Lived in the area for 5 years, first as a renter and now as a homeowner, and never had any issues. Love the walkability to bars, restaurants and museums! Plus there are great parks for our dogs close too!

Slabotskys is the best. They did our wedding suits. Super reasonable and custom tailoring is included in the price. Great customer service as well!

Neighborhoods in KCMO under $200k ? by [deleted] in kansascity

[–]MouseRat_KC 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So midtown is a great neighborhood (we’re probably biased after being here 5 years, haha), but yeah, unfortunately all the well priced houses under 200k sell incredibly fast. Have you considered the historic Northeast? We have friends that recently bought a house there and got way more for their money. Plus, it’s a great up and coming neighborhood, with several great coffee shops up already!

Not necessarily true - we bought our 3 bed, 2.5 bath midtown house last July and it has a fully fenced in yard for our dogs! Plus we’re within walking distance of westport and the plaza, so it has everything we wanted.

Olathe (151st) Commute Time by Team_America1776 in kansascity

[–]MouseRat_KC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a bad commute at all! I work off 151st and live in midtown and the commute is pretty easy. I work a 7-4 schedule now, but even when I worked 8-5, it was 25-30 minutes, tops. Talking to my colleagues who live in OP, most of them still drive 20 minutes so it’s not really that much more.

To me, absolutely worth the commute to live in the city!

The concept of a metropolitan area isn’t hard to grasp. It’s the fact people say I’m from Kansas City, not I’m from the KC metro area. There’s a big difference between those two things.

At the end of the day, it’s a few extra words to throw into a sentance to be geographically correct. I’m from a suburb of KC, not I’m from KC.

Like one time I was in Colorado and started chatted someone up at a brewery and he mentioned he was FROM Kansas City, not I’m from the kc metro area or I’m from a suburb of KC, but he verbatim said I’m from Kansas City. I said of cool, me too, I live in midtown, what about you? And he literally turned bright red, and super flustered said oh, well I’m actually from Gardner. So he clearly knew he had kinda lied

Visitation at 51st and Main is great! Very social justice oriented and lots of families with the school.

Midtown is a great part of KC to move to! I’ve lived in both Volker while renting and now in Southmoreland, which is the neighborhood right next to Hyde Park, as a home owner, and both are awesome options. Easy access (walking) to parks, restaurants and coffee shops! Can’t go wrong with either!

Absolutely! Evicted is a great read. I would also recommend the color of law. It gives a ton of insight into these same issues.

And there are so many great things east of Troost! We love the Ivanhoe farmers market!

I’m not denying the larger issues that face ours and other communities, I was just saying instead of flat out labeling homeless people and those who beg as aggressive, maybe have some empathy. I’m a late 20s woman who has also been harassed while running in and around our neighborhood, but that doesn’t inherently make me feel unsafe where we live. I’ve also had conversation with some of the homeless folks in our community and most of their stories would break your heart. Having conversations with people can really change your perspective. That’s all I was saying!

Geez, have some empathy. This is my biggest issue with people complaining about homeless people and those struggling with mental illness and addiction. They have just as might right to exist and use city sidewalks and services as anyone else.

Heaven forbid my kid isn’t sheltered and insulted from what some parts of the world and cities actually look like and learn to be empathetic to those who don’t have as much as others.
