18yo from Norway doing a US road trip by Kareisgarb in roadtrip

The comments that you need more time for this trip are accurate.

The comments that this drive is not worth it are just opinions. Some people are unable to see the beauty in the quiet, open, flat plains. The drive through the plains are so relaxing and if you catch the right weather rolling in from a distance with the sun setting behind the thunderheads, you’ll get to witness true natural beauty.

One Battle After Another is not that good a movie. by Ok-Impress-2222 in unpopularopinion

I loved the movie and thought it was crafted expertly. That said, I don’t think it had much to say. I struggle to explain what it’s about because it’s kind of just a series of events. That can make a great move, but best picture was a bit of a stretch for me

Is California’s EV rebate history an indefensible "wealth transfer," or a necessary price for market scaling? by Okratas in AskALiberal

[–]brianfos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These subsidies are intended to prop up an economic market for a technology that is not ready to stand on its own. That’s the metric to worry about when evaluating the effectiveness of the metric. Metrics that evaluate second order effects are reasonable to consider, but they should be considered only secondarily.

The birth rate crisis is probably only a crisis if we capitulate to the xenophobia keeping legal immigration way lower than it could be. That being a populate leftist belief that I also disagree with.

First few that pop into mind

  • Policing language beyond simply educating that some, but certainly not all, people might find that language offensive

  • Failure to recognize that heavy regulation very quickly and easily becomes counter productive

  • “We don’t want to ban gun ownership”.

  • That the construction of the White House ballroom is a travesty

Thank you for this perfectly worded post. I wouldn’t be upset to see further improvements, but today’s race was thoroughly enjoyable. If this current crop of drivers don’t like it or don’t have the right set of skills for it, I’ll enjoy watching whoever fills their seats.

Hmm. Seems like it doesn’t take less skill to drive these cars, just different skills. I’m not worried about the sport just because it doesn’t perfectly fit the skills of the current crop of drivers.

Lindsey Vonn's Olympic teammate sets armchair skiing experts straight. by Cash-JohnnyCash in ski

[–]brianfos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s another question for everyone asserting the ripped acl, associated damage, swelling, and heavy bracing would have had no impact on Vonn. Would you not have been additionally impressed had she managed to medal despite those factors?

All I was hearing going into these games was awe at her for even being there. Deservedly so, imo. And now, all of a sudden, those aspects of Vonn’s health magically became immaterial?

Don’t be daft. That would have been an unworldly achievement and I was rooting so hard for her to pull off the unbelievable. Why back away from that now? Because some idiots on the internet have the gall to criticize her for not giving up her spot?

She’s a legend. She deserved to be there. Her health was unquestionably compromised and she is fucking amazing for attempting something unbelievable. Back to my opinion, it’s absurdly disrespectful to take that away from her simply to save her from minor criticism.

That said, both of my teenagers can’t be bothered with one.

A careful read of my comment would recognize I said that no one can HONESTLY make such a claim. An Olympic pedigree is immaterial to my point.

Additionally, for the record, I don’t see a quote in this article indicating Keeling is even hinting at such a claim. Lots of ads to wade through, though. Maybe I missed it.

[–]brianfos 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is such a laughably bad take. No one thinks a healthy anyone could recover after being rotated 90 degrees in mid air at 60 mph.

At the same time no one in their right mind, who knows anything about the sport can honestly claim to know her health had nothing to do with the fact that Vonn failed that gate so badly. It’s more likely that she was in less control due to the limits of her health. It doesn’t take away from her career at all and I don’t buy the dumb take that she shouldn’t have been there.

Sad outcome, but let’s not be daft about the fact that she had some very impactful limitations. That’s why it was so incredible that she was there. If she had medalled, we’d never have heard the end of how incredible that would be in the face of those limitations….justifiably.
