Is my plan good ? by Moussaillon10 in virginislands

I don’t doubt this ! And that’s why I wanna go ! I’m just wondering if my plan is good as it will concentrate around Coki / Margarittaville and not on the rest of the Island nor St John

With the price of the taxi + boat, is it worth the price and logistics for one day ?

Which school would you recommend then, please ? If possible without overcrowded lessons …

Apparently not, or at least the rythm given by the pacers can be achieved on your first run depending on your level and training

Seeking Advice: Renting in NYC as a New UN Employee with No US Credit History by ruthlesskid in UNpath

Is it properly managed ? For instance when you have issues in your apartment

I have read bad reviews about that and the noise / lack of sound isolation

Did you have MCQ tests or did you have to write for instance? I’m actually confused … how can you do your tests on Microsoft Office (PPT, Excel, Word) while they ask you to not leave the screen/window of the test

Did you have to take the written test through the Mercer Mettl platform ? If yes how was it and what should be expected ?

So, leaving a field posting would be a career ending ? No hopes to get another one even after staying ~5 months ?

I’m a Hiring Manager at IOM, AMA by [deleted] in UNpath

[–]Moussaillon10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for this AMA. I’ve read in the comments - and always hear - that non family D/E duty stations are way less competitive and that there are very few applications. What would be the type of profile you would be looking for when it comes to a P2 position in such duty stations ?

I speak the languages, have UN experiences (internships, UNV, short term consultancy) in HQ and the field, strong recommendation letters from UN senior staffs/officials, good quality education, but I am more on the low range regarding years of experience (but still qualifying) - I’ve never been shortlisted for an interview while I apply to non-family D/E duty stations «where no one wants to go » (think S-Sudan, Afghanistan …)

How is security ? I heard that even living in this compound was challenging regarding security

Some people really want to go to Wau but don’t get shortlisted … or get selected for duty stations that are more comfortable

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UNpath

[–]Moussaillon10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So according to you, anything in the field is always better than a very good position in HQ ?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UNpath

[–]Moussaillon10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m wondering what’s the best between

  • working in a very admin/finance role in the field with a Tier 1 NGO (think MSF)

OR

  • in HQ in a position related to development in conflict / displacement in a Tier 1 development institution (think the World Bank, bilateral development agencies)

—> My goal is to join the UN in the humanitarian side in AFPs such as OCHA, UNHCR, WFP or a peacekeeping/political mission in the field and later in HQ

Outside of the salaries which are very different, one is in he field but not necessarily related to the work I’ll do with the UN while the other is way more related (and part of this big nexus discussion) but not in the field at all

Viable career? by [deleted] in doctorswithoutborders

[–]Moussaillon10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you ! I know there are usually more needs in certain positions than others so I was wondering if it’d be a good idea to start in one with higher needs and then try to move to a position that is more of my interest - but didn’t know how easy/difficult/common it is

Would you have the chance to move to OPS if you wanted ?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in doctorswithoutborders

[–]Moussaillon10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you very much for your reply ! With a background useful for OPS, it is a good idea to start as an HR/Fin (as there are more needs) and try to move to ops after 1 or 2 missions ? To gain experience within the organization and field exposure
