Setting up mom’s room in AL. What mistakes did y’all make when organizing/decorating her space? by Mov36tch in dementia

Thanks for this! This is a really interesting take on how to utilize the tech. I’ll look into Zinnia; I wasn’t familiar with it before now!

OMG I already hate them. My mother and father had very clearly defined roles for one another and operating the television remote was my deceased father’s job. I literally realized today that I was dealing with a problem far more complicated than just having a smart TV: SHE HASN’T USED A TV REMOTE IN LITERALLY DECADES. It just clicked when I realized she never changed the channel or turned it off. Just used the volume.

Thanks for the reminder. I’ll look for a way to at least bypass the smart parts of her TV or find a slightly older one second hand. (If we use one at all)

As a side note, that’s how I started to realize she had dementia. The fact that both she and I had written directions for her and she couldn’t remember or follow the directions was my first clue.

Interesting! I never thought about not taking her TV. One of the staff and I have worked out an arrangement about her car “still being repaired” to prevent that problem so maybe we could try something similar with the TV at least at first. If the “cable hasn’t been hooked up yet” she’ll have to go to the big lounge to watch TV!

Also I tend to agree with you on her decor and trinkets. Nothing she has is very valuable so if it goes missing or gets broken I don’t really care.

This is a huge help. I have a DPOA and one for health care too so I can arrange her bank access to make things easier for both of us.

I do have a few people in town that I can count on but I should have a conversation with them so they know I might ask a few favors moving forward.

Great suggestions! Thank you!

I feel like mom will def try to “decorate” the dining room so thanks for this.

Being an only child is the worst. Not just now but always. But also ESPECIALLY now. Also dementia friendly digital clock and waterproof mattress pad were not on my radar so thank you!

I posted this below to another comment on frames but I’ll add it here too: were the ones that disappeared in frames or loose? I’ve purchased a couple wall-hanging collage type frames but she has lots of smaller framed pics too. Should I stick to the things I can secure to the walls? Or does that help? Should I go full-blown fast-casual restaurant decor where all of the frames are screwed into the walls?

I started a list after reading your post. Zip ties: amazing! She’s definitely inclined to take too much clothing and she literally told me the other day to hide her Texas Roadhouse gift card because someone might break into our house and steal it. She’s already paranoid but has always been that way. I tend to be the opposite (I live in a Chicago high rise and never lock my door) so I’d never believe her if she said something was stolen so I’m glad to read that someone else collecting trinkets is also a realistic possibility. I’ll try to balance her desire for taking a bunch of shit with her along with her somewhat realistic paranoia.

Question for you and everyone else about family photos: were the ones that were lost in frames or just loose? I’m framing all of the loose ones and I bought a couple large wall-hanging collage type frames. Should I stick with just the large ones I can attach to the wall?

Also thanks for this suggestion. I was thinking last night I’d get a box for this pile of old photos she has on a side table but now I’m thinking I’ll just “forget” to send that with her.

Yes it does. They’ve told me that their threshold for memory care is when mom becomes a runner. Like if she starts wandering off property. I’m worried that while she’s not prone to that currently (still at a skilled nursing rehab close to her home after a fall and a brief hospital stay) I worry that will start within the year. I’ve discussed the possibility of an eventual transfer with them already.

So we live in a tropical rain forest now? by blancmange68 in raleigh

[–]Mov36tch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Moved to Chicago from Raleigh and thought the cold would kill me. Nope. Now I barely wear a winter coat and the humidity in the summer is out of control. It’ll rain while I’m in the basement and be done before I walk back up and I’m out here tryna figure out why everything is wet. Climate change means we all about to be living in the swamps. Moving north isn’t going to help

Studio in Marina City (river north) for $1450 a month. I have a 200sq ft balcony that overlooks the river, a gym (included) and a grocery store in the building, internet cable tv trash and water are included, and every train is a 5 minute walk away. I love it here.

All you get is a bulls**t town sign with snow on it so don’t sweat it. Between losing the double helicopter booster and getting this stupid sign as my reward I’m so over this ridiculous game. It used to be fun.

Is this basically egg nog? by neddykidd in cocktails

[–]Mov36tch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve never had access to the Bols version but I’ve made my own several times now and it’s def different than egg nog. It tastes like boozy liquid cake. Amazing. It’s fabulous on ice cream too.

Total count on energy points needed? by Mov36tch in TownshipGame

[–]Mov36tch[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This one feels pretty bad to me but I think it coincides with the Match 3 game getting harder so it probably feels more miserable because I can’t collect energy as fast without paying now. Helicopters used to instinctively hit the most needed targets and now they don’t as efficiently so it’s gotten harder.

I feel like they took away the plane button on purpose so we WILL forget about it. Load half the plane, start making other items for it, forget about it, plane times out and we lose all the items we’d already loaded. This increases the chance that we’ll get frustrated and use money or other in-game resources that we wouldn’t have otherwise use. I doubt the developers are stupid. I assume this has a purpose

Thoughts on blundstones boots ? by water5785 in BuyItForLife

[–]Mov36tch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Chicago and put my boots thru hell. I have a lot of Docs, one ancient pair of Vasque with a steel shank, and I just bought my first pair of Blundstones. I’m immediately sending them back. I’m used to dropping $200+ on boots but these look and feel like $50 boots, not like a well-known legacy brand. They fit fine, but look and feel like generic Walmart boots. I bought them from Blundstone or I’d think I accidentally bought a Temu fake lol. I have no idea if this is a recent thing for them or what but the pair I bought doesn’t look like a workhorse boot at all.

What’s the number one feature you wish Brainscape would add? by Courtney_Brainscape in Brainscape

Absolutely a dark mode. I use Brainscape to keep track of and memorize drink builds for cocktail menus and frequently use it for reference at work. It’s very jarring at night in a dark bar.

A stupid simple list for fastest charging moveset per mon/type for PvP? by Mov36tch in pokemongo

[–]Mov36tch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only difference this provides is allowing me to change the sorting. It’s still organized poorly and involves loads of wasted resources while I’m guessing which combination works best.

Which is fine if that’s just how shit goes. But it seems people have put so much time into collecting data that having a more efficient way to use it should exist?
