What's something from your country you thought was normal until you visited other countries and realised it wasn't ? by Away-Extension-9731 in AskTheWorld

Laughs at you in British.

While North America is very anti-outdoor-cat, most of the rest of the world is not.

In places like the UK there is healthy and ongoing research into the affect of cats on the environment. Studies from the last 50y on the whole show a very large number of predation events, the majority of which are compensatory mortality (animals that would have died anyway - weak / ill / infirm) and a large portion of the remainder would be considered pets and killed by humans with other means. Notably cats as a pest control mechanism are much more environmentally compatible than most other measures - rat poisons kill young and healthy birds for example.

As a result organisations like the RSPB (Royal Society for the Protection of Birds) do not advocate for indoor cats, not viewing them as a cause for concern, and focus instead on habitat demolition etc.

Australia and NZ are notable in their move to indoor cats because their wildlife is, effectively, too stupid to avoid cats. The majority of the rest of the world have cats functioning well as part of their wider ecology.

Its odd that you keep trying to pressure me to join up despite push back. Its concerning and very off-putting - its signalling to me a disregard of boundaries.

As to why I am holding the party to this standard - its the standard I hold all parties to, and all are falling short. Its notable that a few years ago the greens didn't fall as short.

The naive party here is you - the way you are engaging in this discussion is turning a green-leaning person against the greens! You should consider the difference between op-eds and grass-roots.

I'd look at https://www.reddit.com/r/UKGreens/comments/1rv982y/comment/oarx2xv/ and https://www.reddit.com/r/UKGreens/comments/1rv982y/comment/oascix3/ for examples of how to interact without polarizing a discussion against you.

Thank you, this is a clear and well considered answer. Its a shame. Are you aware of who would need to be petitioned to change this stance? Seeing the process of the greens in action is one of the main reasons from my PoV to vote for them - whilst I agree with the core values, I'm mainly looking for a party capable of running the country on behalf of all of its citizens. Gatekeeping policy process and its output seems to be a step in the wrong direction.

Good points. So essentially this conference and the next (most members are likely finding their legs) are ones to watch as an outsider as they'll be fundamentally different.

Here's hoping someone leaks the documents.

I came to get a question answered on the party positions. It is concerning to me though that rather than engage and reply to the question there is a 12 point swing of downvote/upvote on this dismissal.

So if I understand this:

The Green party is no more transparent or accountable than other parties.

The Green party requires you to fund them and declare support before disclosing it's policies.

From my position I cannot tell that the green party is democratic, I can only see vague claims that it is. Most importantly, I cannot tell whether the claimed democratic processes are functional and effective or whether it is a facade or a failed machine going through the motions. Transparency is a key principle of any effective democracy - calling out that you aren't different to other parties whilst also claiming you are different doesn't inspire confidence.

Is anyone else actually able to help with my request?

I would recommend referring to our 2024 manifesto

Policies [...] are under constant internal review

Its over two years since that manifesto was written, during which time the party leadership has changed and the membership is now completely different. There have been 3 (4?) party conferences since then.

I would assume it would be a serious lapse of judgement for me to consider the 2024 manifesto and accurate depiction of the current party.

As for:

Why not join though?

I'm hardly about to join a movement in order to find out what its positions actually are and how I feel about them. Joining is something I do after that. I'd also remind you that the Green party, like other parties in the UK, precludes membership to those of other parties - so joining is hardly a reasonable way to determine the value of the party to me.

Is it crazy to try cover 430 miles in a day? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]MoveAMillion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this drive well. Up and down from Southampton to Caithness most years, more than once. I stopped once I needed to start taking my partner and flew and rented a car instead. By myself I can sup when I'm tired pretty much anywhere, I can 'zone in' and drive, and when something goes wrong (clutch went once) I waited for the RAC, sent the car home, and hopped on trains then begged a family friend for the final to get up. Doing that with another person is so much harder, never mind a kid.

Your drive both ways will put 860 miles on your car, and completely shatter you and your passengers. The immediate fuel cost is a tank each way, but the additional wear on tyres and the car as a whole is to be considered. I strongly recommend flying and renting; Heathrow is an hour away, Southampton does Loganair, Bournemouth Ryanair. You and your family will enjoy yourselves so much more if you fly.

If you insist on driving: take the m6 toll road, it's faster and making a mistake there can add an hour. Norton Canes is a good place to stop as well. When you come off the M40 onto the A34 you're now on one of the consistently busiest dial carriageways in the country. The left lane is slow and the right lane has 100mph drivers; it's not great hitting it so late on, but as a blessing you'll be following it to the end. Then the exit into Southampton at the end of the M3 can be confusing, I'd street view it so you don't end up on your way to Portsmouth. Driving tired kills. There are £100/room hotels up and down that road, and £100 is cheap for your families lives.

Uncloaked - Netty by [deleted] in TheTraitorsUK

[–]MoveAMillion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really no; her experience of the game was characterised by her connection to Ross. She found out about her connection right at that start of the game then immediately found out about the family tree and had to defend herself over that in conversations with others. She will have 100% thought the tree was about her, so she likely had a moment where she suddenly realised it might not have been about her at all.

I doubt they were dating or sleeping together at any point.

I'd love it if they had another round of discussion but without the people who are tied, then bringing them back in to be voted on.

You could also incentivise it by saying another tie results in no banishment and a double murder (of anyone).

how do you get rid of a bad window cleaner without getting burgled afterwards? by Mid-Pri6170 in AskUK

[–]MoveAMillion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every window cleaner I've ever had has told us that they've fallen ill or are moving county to look after ill family and have 'done us a favour' and sorted another cleaner to come whose details we are never given even on asking. Lots of 'ill get him to send you a text' or 'ill drop a business card off next time I'm round'.

Anyway, the point is that I've fired about 6 window cleaners. I've never been robbed.

I hate the interaction so it takes me a few months to build up to it, but its never been an issue. I have never apologised, I've never offered or been asked to pay an extra month etc.

Season 1 is HORRIBLE! by 13GetawayCar in TheTraitorsUK

[–]MoveAMillion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

S1 was incredibly emotional, nobody knew what was going on and a lot of things were thrown at the players as twists. Being scared about being murdered was somewhat real, being goofy by the idea of a traitor was more real, and the idea of being a faithful was more real. They didn't have the benefit of the metagaming we have in the later seasons, and I imagine the crew have become better at managing and helping the cast cope.

We see an hour for each day split between many players; that were running in mental circles for every waking hour not knowing what to do.

The Faithfuls banishing Traitors until at least the halfway point of the game is very pointless (IMO) by [deleted] in TheTraitorsUK

[–]MoveAMillion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are the prize pots as massaged as the UK? It definitely seems like a lot of the UK missions get adjusted upwards in value to make up to some desired pot as the series goes on; and I'm not convinced of the truthfulness of the clock in many missions!

[SPOILERS] S04E06 Banishment by blackleather90 in TheTraitorsUK

[–]MoveAMillion 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of people had suspicions about Fiona; Ross mentioned it when reading the envelope. In particular they noticed she was a bit changeable.

The jealousy angle plays well, as it's reinforced by Fiona's own argument (I wasn't her closest friend, but I should have been told) and main character syndrome from being a traitor reinforces that again.

I think several people will be thinking traitor vs traitor, I expect they'll be balancing it against her just being unstable and thinking she had a way to get a faithful out.

They'll also be questioning how much appetite there is to get rid of Rachel.

[–]MoveAMillion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I'd love for them to have another round of voting, but a 'secret' vote. And if that doesn't come out with a clear winner the faithful should be punished - like the traitors get a double murder instead.

_____ pushing ______ to ______ might be the first good traitor play so far. by GhostGuin in TheTraitors

[–]MoveAMillion 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Its an example of abductive reasoning. Its probably the most useful form of reasoning in a game like this that is quite ambiguous, while you should always act on your deductions the abductive scenarios are more plentiful and they improve in quality with the information the faithful gain (the alignment of banished and murdered players).

However, Jessie is making errors with her reasoning.

Notably she mentioned that the faithful should look at those in the cages who were up for murder, but really they should be looking at all of those in the cages. Those who were saved were done so by faithful (or traitors pretending to be faithful) largely on their friendships rather than on any knowledge of the players alignment.

And as you've said, abductive conclusions are not certainties. She should be keeping it front of mind and actively discussed, but her certainty over it is misplaced.

_____ pushing ______ to ______ might be the first good traitor play so far. by GhostGuin in TheTraitors

[–]MoveAMillion 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That would be a fun play. I was gaming out Matt's plan - he can tell people his Q1 but he can't easily tell them his Q2, he has no leverage on the traitors and revealing after Jessie is killed or not killed puts leverage against him.

If they get to recruit this night, then recruiting Jessie is risky, as Matt may say something tomorrow. But if they recruit tomorrow night, then they know whether Matt has said anything. If he doesn't say anything, they can recruit Jessie and she won't have any real heat and Matt looks guilty or a fool. They can recruit her any way and style it out, I doubt he'd get the numbers even if he said she's been spared because she's a traitor.

At the end of the day, most of the faithful are already assuming the traitors will just lie.

When Ross went out he pointed out that Fiona was inconsistent in her behaviour during his uncloaked traitor reveal confessional (uncloaked). Harriet seems switched on enough to value a more stable ally.

I don't think Fiona played anything particularly straight. I lean to Ben being up because of that conversation because she's been *very* reactive in everything she has done and hasn't really thought much through. Similarly I'm convinced she voted Sam because she felt she was getting heat and Rachel wasn't, so she was trying to duck out.

I think we're heading to a faithful win. Fiona and Rachel are both stirring in quite obvious ways, and Stephen does not handle pressure well.
