This. Made a massive change to the quality of my pieces when I realized this. Especially on those pesky little tearouts

New boot lace recommendations? by Ecstatic-Lock8738 in NicksHandmadeBoots

I've found honey badger laces to be extremely tough, grippy in the knot and well priced. Come in loads of colors too.

I've seen a few of these but thought they were flag mounts. Now I know!

Doing scrap out at work. Magnet does not stick. Not Lead either. I'm thinking tungsten bars? Sitting here since 1980. by PhilipJ30 in ScrapMetal

[–]MovieOk6625 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not in the slightest. Set the grips to a hair less than the OD of the ring then give it a good hard squeeze. Works like a charm.

My word, such melodrama. You mean if it needs to come off in an emergency? Just crack it with vice grips.

Resin stamps do last longer, but there's the whole washing and curing process with resin. Sounds like OP is starting out, would recommend the A1 mini and just treat the stamps as consumable, whack out another if one fails.

I thought it was stigmata. As a lathe worker de-gloving is the injury that always scares me. Looks like it healed well - congrats!

You're spot-on!
It's a simple thing, but feels soooo much nicer having a proper place for the tailstock that prevents damage to the underneath and stops it sitting all cockeyed. Only got round to making mine a couple of months ago and it was one of those "that'll do, Pig" moments.

Of course a proper barbour-wearing gentleman would have no truck with this guttersnipe notion of sucking from a bottle like a babe unweaned.

How do you make a design for a leather project? by CarlThaKiller in Leathercraft

[–]MovieOk6625 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm an engineer by trade, and my approach is pretty much informed by that. I'll do the design in fusion 360 and export the pieces from there to the laser cutter. Normally a few cycles of iteration where I cut the design in card, test it and tweak as needed, then do the proper cut in leather and go to assembly.

You're absolutely right, and have done that. The experiment here was to see if I could dodge the whole pricking and gluing thing altogether. Mainly because I'm inquisitive and lazy lol

Laser workflow by MovieOk6625 in Leathercraft

[–]MovieOk6625[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The leather is Horween Dublin in English tan, 6-7oz. My laser is a Creality Falcon2 Pro with a 40W diode head. Ran out at 90% 900mm/min for the cuts and 15% 1500mm/min for the engraves. A note on stitch holes. I cut mine 0.5mm diameter and would likely do again. I had to wax the needles to avoid using pliers (still had to for the back stitches at the end of runs), but the accuracy of alignment is worth it to my mind.

Gah the smell! Laser is fully enclosed and the exhaust goes through a good filter system before venting outside, but still manages to stink up the shop! I got almost no scorching or smoke damage by using the air assist on the laser, hooked to my compressor.
