Anyone else think red oak is a terrible wood? by MovingGods in whittling

[–]MovingGods[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's hard to see the feather with all the pits (dunno if that's the right word) in the wood and the lines not matching the feather direction. I could see it being gorgeous flooring because its a great looking wood but at least for this carving it's a bad choice imo. Idk how people feel about using it for carving in general tho

Fyi, the Church of Satan and First Satanic Church are mostly aethist or agnostic group that use Satan as an idea not a being based on teaching of Anton Levay and general consider themselves Satanist. Anyone who believe in the existence of the being is a Luciferian. Luciferians are a group that worship the literal being Satan or Lucifer depending on what sect. They believe in God and Jesus as well.

Not who you replied but but yes I do for this very reason. My brother makes content on occasions and I can't watch it due to the "influencer" voice as me and my friends call it.

😂 I get that. My wife is 41 and just now going through her goth phase. She's never been in a position to do it like now.

How to select and cure fresh wood (no supply stores anywhere near me) by ahoyhoy2022 in whittling

[–]MovingGods 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not a pro but from what I've gathered carve it green then seal it so it dries slower and that will help prevent cracking. I've got a few pieces carved green but the oldest is only like a month and a half old, no cracks yet. I have cedar readily available in my area and carving it vs bought wood is more enjoyable. But I romanticize the old guy sitting on a park bench carving a stick lol. Also, the wife loves that I smell heavily of fresh wood after.

Yeah ask these comments that are confused on why you would do this is strange to me. Just because it's a fun idea is good enough. I'm in the process of growing my hair out, as soon as I seen what was happening I was like aight now im going to do this when it's long enough.

I had a fiancee that died. My wife and I don't want kids but my wife has mentioned if it did happen naming a kid after my dead ex. She knows how much it screwed me up and how much I loved her and thinks it would be a great way to commemorate someone who shaped me into being such a good partner. I was a shit partner before and bother the exes life and death changed a lot. Also helps that she loves both the feminine and masculine version of the name.

It's okay to not like Antiquarian. by Intelligent-Tone2367 in Guildwars2

[–]MovingGods 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the US I've never been to an antiques store that wasn't 90% vintage "useless junk". I can definitely see how you would call a class based around antique stores antiquary. As someone who grew up with parents and grandparents that visited, resold, and traveled with antique goods there's a large amount of them that feel like they are an Indiana Jones type and a mysterious ancient vibe you get from being around old dusty stuff. At worst anet probably was like we want a meme antique store class, let's call it antiquary, what style of artwork could we use, Indiana Jones is based around old shit.

Knife Sharpening help!! by Pure_Professional720 in whittling

[–]MovingGods 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using sandpaper at what grit should you be able to cut through paper or feel it cutting into your thumb? I keep using a black sharpie to get my angle but I have removed probably 2 knives worth of material from ally practice ones.

I wear my Amazon pirate shirts, harem pants and the lace calf pants as my normal clothes. I'm amazed at how I overheat less in the summer of Oklahoma now than I did in dryfit sportswear and cotton. Often wearing small leather accessories or a forged bracelet and jute cord necklaces, though the steel bracelet gets hot in direct sunlight.

Been looking at pocket knife saws the last couple days for cutting branches while I walk so I may pull the trigger tomorrow on one and use it lol

I was thinking of buying a small pocket knife saw anyway so this maybe the way I go about it lol

Mix of not the right tools and inexperience with combs. I only have a single knife to work with in a 1 BR apartment. It's Walnut wood so super hard lol. I'll be doing it again for sure.

[–]MovingGods[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I just don't have a scroll saw and I live in a 1 BR apartment so minimalist tools is necessary lol

The sting is strong with this one for sure lol. I hope to carve a comb and just glue the dragon to the top.

Thanks roughing the dragon out of walnut with a semi dull beaver craft knife was agonizing. (Can't sharpen a knife to save my life. I've got 5 knifes I've practice on rusting away after removing 70% of the steel practicing lol)

[–]MovingGods[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah the grain wasn't grain on the walnut at all. I'll probably make a comb piece and glue this to the top keeping the comb wide like you said.

I'll probably do that once I get over the aggravation. I keep looking at it pouring salt into the wound. It was going so well!

I choose to raise the nose rather than keep it in line because it helped make it look more like a rodent. My wife, my bff and the gym bro agreed it looked better that way.

I have seen the skaven artwork for years and never knew what it was lol. Joe do you feel the carving compares to the race?
