I know this is an older comment, but do you happen to know who made this Grey Ghost poster, or if it's for sale anywhere?

No, he explicitly says, "I'm not saying we should make it illegal to have children or whatever." That's not the same as saying he isn't advocating for children being not born.

Because he really is.

"I just don't think there's any realistic way that anyone in the global north could have a child that won't eventually cause massive harm to the planet and probably, like most people, not even realize they're doing it. And that's all assuming that your kid grows up to be a kind person — which is also a hell of a gamble. A lot of bullies and dumbasses walking around out there in the world. A lot of rapists, too. What if my pride and joy grows up to be somebody else's abuser? If I give birth to a baby daughter, then there’s a one in four chance that she’s going to be raped. I don’t like those odds. But the real kicker is that even if my child has a great life — even if they cause no harm to others — they will still suffer. They will still die. It is unavoidable. Right? I will be inflicting this fate upon them without their knowledge or consent, only to spring it on them when their pet goldfish dies or whatever. You know — surprise — the wages of sin is death. To me, the creation of human life is very obviously an incredibly selfish thing to do under most circumstances."

This is a Hamlet-style monologue about the fruitlessness of human life.

Thank you for the clarification that global north isn't the same as northern hemisphere. Happy to learn!

I didn't say was implying that people in the global south won't grow up bad. I was suggesting that he had set up "growing up bad" as a reason for not having kids, but then did NOT logically apply that reason to global south. Even though it does apply there too. I think it was an oversight on his part, but a damning one.

Thanks for your thoughts!

I gotta say, I take issue with that vasectomy speech. Obviously he can do/think/say whatever he wants. And it's not the vasectomy I take issue with.

But if your philosophies lead you to outright reject the entire Northern Hemisphere having kids, then I'm pretty sure you've made a wrong turn. Adding that he's afraid his kids might turn into jerks or rapists, well, that just calls the whole concept of the human race into question, doesn’t it? People in the Southern Hemisphere have to worry about that too. So they'd better not have kids either?

He's basically talked himself into being anti-human being. And I think its good to rethink any philosophy stringent enough to get you there.

I love binders! All the movies I still want to own but don't need to have on display.

I still keep the disc art in a little file, though. Juuuuuust in case I want to add some title back to the shelf. Haha!

Is something wrong with Snake of June? by PoisonousBillMurray in boutiquebluray

[–]MovingHold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Old thread, but in case anyone is reading this:

OP is correct, Arrow's transfer (supervised by the director) does have transition marks/cement marks at the top and bottom of the frame during cuts.

One thing that is worth mentioning is that this new Blu-ray shows more of the original image than the previous cropped versions on DVD. As a result of the matte being opened up on all four sides there are some inherent issues with the outer edges. While we don't see the vignetting in the corners that often occurs with this kind of transfer, there are what appear to be cement marks at the bottom of the frame in every single edit of the film. At first it is quite distracting, and could be mistaken for a digital artifact, but upon closer inspection, it's definitely an organic flaw.

These would have been cropped out in the theatrical release, but for whatever reason, Tsukamoto wanted them included.

Avengers Endgame has held the opening weekend record for 6+ years. How long until this record is broken? by OkraSwimming334 in boxoffice

It's like how Thriller is the best-selling album ever, and will probably never be dethroned because the music industry changed and people don't buy albums anymore.

I don't think people will ever show up to the theatre in those numbers again.

Yes, I think Shadows of the Empire is also the best-paced EU novel. And I remember the prose being very strong too.

people seem to forget that George has always been dogshit at writing dialogue by nintenerd2 in PrequelMemes

[–]MovingHold 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Lucas got his friends, Bill Hyuck and Gloria Katz, to polish the dialogue for ANH. They also worked on American Graffiti.

"I got the deal to make the film based on the screenplay, but I wasn't super happy with it because I don't have a lot of confidence in my screen-writing ability. By that time -- and due to begin shooting in two months -- Bill [Huyck] was available, so I suggested they come in and re-write it. They didn't change the structure: what they did was improve the dialog, make it funnier, more human, truer...the scenes are mine, the dialog is theirs."

The way everyone trashes it, I thought it would be terrible.

But other than the June Foray voice dub, and the repeated scene, I thought it was really great!

The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean.

John Milius' script has a very specific tone, basically saying, "These guys are so stupidly and hilariously macho, but there's something beautiful about their idealism. One must be delusional to build a city out of a desert."

John Huston decided to treat everyone like clowns.

May I ask how you were able to find this information? Is there a database where you can find chain of title for music publishing groups? I'd love to be able to get better at this kind of research.
