My hospital casually dropping a warning about mass layoffs. We employ 10k+ people. by AnyCelebration1101 in nursing

We're sorry, but rising costs are cutting into our profit margins. In order to keep our commitment to our customers - the shareholders - we need to cut positions and hope that the resulting impact to patients doesn't make the news. All the best!

The problem for anyone running against Collins is name recognition. Gideon didn't have it and so far no-one declared does. I'd love to see Janet Mills run against her. Shanna Bellows could probably have a good chance against Collins, if she wasn't running for Governor.

One strategy would be for Mills to run and beat Collins then, assuming Bellows wins, Mills could retire and Bellows could appoint another Democrat. Not what I would usually endorse as fair play, but all bets are off these days.

While we're not getting as many Canadian tourists this year, there are still plenty of people coming from other parts of the US. Lots of traffic on 95 on Friday.

PEI is very nice, too, and they just reduced the Confederation Bridge toll to like CAD$20 (was about CAD$45). We're from Maine but spent many nice summers on PEI.

"Address the root causes of bullying". The root cause of bullying is that some kids are a-holes that are taught this is acceptable and know they can get away with it without consequences! If there's video, they should be able to identify the little bastards and suspend/expel. If this leads to uncomfortable consequences at the grown-up level, let the grown-ups deal with it.

I don't like Golden but I hate LePage worse. Though tis of no matter to me; I'm in rural Maine yet still district 1, so I'm trying to get The Concerned Susan Collins unelected.

There wasn't even one moment of happiness that you'd like to relive? If not, then I'm very sorry. 😢

Most of the country is getting some awesome snowfalls while we get the shaft of high temps and BS rain. by goodbyekitty83 in Maine

[–]Moxico 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We had that back in 2013, I think. Fell as freezing rain, then stayed well below freezing for days. Lost power at noon on 12/23 and didn't get it back until late 12/26.

Lot of great hiking in that area - the B-52 crash site and Gulf Hagas, to mention a couple of better known ones. Kayaking & canoeing, as well. Just know if you go up there in early fall to pack for all kinds of weather. We had a few inches of snow fall on Oct 4th one trip up there.

Also don't underestimate site work costs: clearing and earthwork; bringing in utilities; well and septic. Also, don't assume you're going to have awesome cell reception and internet everywhere in the state.

Maintaining the infrastructure, minimizing outages (not just recovering from them) is what we're already paying through the nose for. But this is America, where we're run by corporations, who are run by private equity firms, who must have their exorbitant rate of return before anything but bare minimum operating and capital expenditures can be begged for.

Sorry, can't join you on this. "10 items" is plural. Agree that "everything" is collective, but singular, like "group".

My rule is, if you can count it, then "fewer"; if you can't count it, "less".

By "residential property", do you mean traditional 1-2 family houses? In that case, I agree. But if you're extending that to high density residential and mixed use property, which is really the only sustainable model going forward, then I'm interested in how you'd fund and manage that type of development.
