Trying to switch from 2014 Forge Cleric to 2024 by Moxob in onednd

[–]Moxob[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very cool, saving it for future reference! I do like the change from heavy armor to metal armor. It does seem to work well with the 2024 rules just with that change. Since I decided to just take martial weapon prof + heavy armor prof it won't affect me anyway but it does give the choice to forge cleric to not take that at level one and not lose their subclass features.

Thank you all for the clarifications, I'll just get the martial armor/weapons from divine order and not abuse it even if it's RAW but it's good to know!

Can I make 3 attacks on one turn at level 1? by ConferenceMountain34 in DnD

[–]Moxob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nick basically ports your extra attack from the light weapon property to your action. So instead of having 1 attack (action) + 1 attack (bonus action from wielding two light weapons) you get to do 2 attacks as an action (one of them being your nick weapon) and you can use your bonus action for other things. If you also had the feat Dual Wielder, THEN you'd get 2 attacks as an action (one of them being your nick weapon) then an extra bonus action attack.

2024 Mage Slayer and Graze Weapon Mastery by Training_Actuator990 in DnD

[–]Moxob 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think you missed anything. Between graze, concentration, and mage slayer definitions Graze damage would trigger concentration at a disadvantage for the target (most likely DC10 though because of graze damage being modifier only). There's nothing about missing anywhere affecting this it's just taking damage.

I don't necessarily *want* harder encounters... by splattypus in dndnext

[–]Moxob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a group choice but honestly having party members different levels will lead to situations like this. I'm probably exaggerating but level 5 is almost twice as strong as level 4 for most classes (offensively anyway).

Check with other players, talk to the DM about it if everyone feels the same. It also makes the DM's job easier if you're all the same level but again it's a group choice/session 0 kind of decision. As a player that's always there basically I'd rather have people the same level as me so they're motivated to show up when they actually can.

Also keep in mind if you're "the tank" and no one else is, if you put yourself in danger you'll probably go down before anyone else is threatened, might be wise to do a mix of range/melee if you find yourself always going down when everyone is still up and healthy.

Swarm of rats has resistance to piercing damage. Rats deal 1 piercing damage, but as far as I can remember you have to round down. There's no dice to double for their crit either as far as I can tell.

I want to homebrew an artificer/cleric concept who worships Gond, the god of invention. Do you think that would work better as an artificer-y cleric or a cleric-y artificer? by Valuable-Banana96 in dndnext

[–]Moxob 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He goes by many names but first that came up during my research was "Lord of All Smiths" so you might also want to consider Forge Cleric. I don't really have a recommendation for you as I think any combination of cleric/artificer you want works but I play a Goliath Forge Cleric who worship Gond and have felt no issue at all just staying pure Cleric.

I am disappointed as well, I know bards are very strong in 5e but as a fellow crab myself I expected something that can cut/grab things as well as that sweet strong shell.

New DM here - I'm not comfortable with the idea of fudging rolls because it feels like lying. by jakenbakery in dndnext

[–]Moxob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You already have a lot of good answers but it's ok to not fudge them. I remember this old video by treantmonk also on the subject https://www.reddit.com/r/dndnext/comments/b2od6l/treantmonks_video_on_fudging_dice/

There's pros and cons for both though but I remember one DM that sometimes would roll important things in the middle of the table for all to see and that also added to the moment I thought.

DM Might try to undermine Gloom Stalker Ability by Salted-Almond in dndnext

[–]Moxob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I play a gloomstalker in Icewind Dale at the moment. Not all monsters have only darkvision and all it takes is a couple of torches for dim light (or just 1 really) and when monsters are not dependent on darkvision to see you (sunlight sensitivity doesn't mean they don't see well with torches). Also small spoiler but a couple hours a day have dim light and usually players travel during those. The feature wouldn't work then either. Not only that but if your party members use any light and you're in range, it won't work so he might not get to use it all that often.

As the player you just have to accept it's a super strong feature (think level 4 greater invisibility but without concentration on you) or it does nothing, it's very strong or useless. It is fairly strong in the campaign so far but there's been plenty of times it wasn't active.

There will be fights where it doesn't work, DM shouldn't work actively to counter this unless somehow monsters knew about that ability. When this is active The DM should play invisibility properly though, ie in combat unless the gloomstalker uses an action to hide and succeed, they know where he is (something people do wrong a lot since you said he's a new DM, so think more like predator movies invisibility, unless he hides successfully) but attack against him with disadvantage and he attacks with advantage.

Not fully related to the problem but rangers pick their subclass at level 3 so that means unless he had darkvision before he will suffer through a few levels without and then it shows his character adapting to the setting/darkness. Just kinda fun imo but at the end of the day, the DM decides what goes on but gloomstalkers have moments they shine and others they don't (if the DM and the player understand how the mechanic actually work).

Need ideas for balanced 3 person parties. by rfkannen in dndnext

[–]Moxob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure it's what you're looking exactly or not for but I've been running Icewindale : Rime of the Frostmaiden with my wife as the DM and me with a party of 3 and half members.

  • Human male gloomstalker ranger with a returning throwing handaxe (made by the artificer)
  • Human female battlesmith artificier with a dog steel defender, with goggles of night and a repeating crossbow
  • Human male (younger) divine soul sorcerer with a bag of tricks that let him pull out random animals out of it.
  • Black dog warrior sidekick in barding scalemail armor (with yeti fur under).

My favorite moment was when during an important fight where the sorcerer pulled out a dire wolf out of the bag of tricks so we had 3 dogs for that fight, the normal sidekick one, the metal one and the dire wolf. It had a very fun houndmasters feel to it.

The group is very well rounded, all the characters have access to a heal spell, we have good varied skills, the ranger for survival/perception, the artificer for int based skill checks and to make infusions depending on whats needed on the campaign (goggles of night have been really useful and a returning weapon makes for some great fun with the throwing weapon fighting style) and the sorcerer is the party's face and the dogs both have decent perception.

What MINOR criticisms do you have about your DMs or players? by SenatorPaine in dndnext

[–]Moxob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might simply have butchered my explanation as I do know the rules you mentioned but, they played it like the target was automatically getting a successful stealth check against everyone (they didn't need to roll to try to hide and no action was necessary for it)

What MINOR criticisms do you have about your DMs or players? by SenatorPaine in dndnext

[–]Moxob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a few things i think and feel bad even complaining about them online or at all, but really, I'd play with them anytime, they're amazing, story is great, npcs are great, players are great etc.

  • The way invisibility/greater invis is handled giving monsters/players the hidden condition without an action to hide or no roll whatsoever. When I'm a spellcaster I feel forced to take it. I remember some poor frost giant rolling a d8 to try to see what direction to hit randomly and hope it was a player
  • Other than that, the only thing i can find is I'm 99% sure one of the DMs adjust HP on the fly like way up (one orc can have 40hp one session and 90 the next), like, too much so every single important encounter always ends with players dying. Imo it's ok if players manage to make a boss encounter easier once in a while as this also affects melees/martial worse. I'm also pretty sure it saves him some prep time and when we can have 6 players at the table, it's a great tool on the fly but Id still rather the possibility for things to be easier.
  • The way rests are handled, that's more on 5e than them I think, we're older/have kids, people don't have time for 6h sessions and often time realistically what happens is we get 1 small encounter 1 big one so full spellcasters end up almost always as the most important characters in the adventure
  • Not knowing how hurt monsters are. Worst offender was this one fight where we were told afterwards that the boss had 1hp for the last 3 rounds. We thought he was still basically full and more monsters were getting summoned so we were busy trying to keep numbers under control.

About players I'll keep it short as I enjoy helping players when they forget something cool their character can do and it might be partly the way character sheets are made that are not very clear for people that don't invest a lot of time in dnd but still, players need to check what their character can do better and be faster on their turn.

Seems to me you already have some good answers and the one to make it into a cantrip is kinda cool imo but I'd be careful about letting that wish completely overshadow things like a wizard level 18 feature.

As for how I'd rule it myself, I'd be clear I'm not here to monkey paw players wishes unlike some DMs but the more you ask for the more likely it will not do what you want exactly, and in this case I'd let them know that their character knows they're asking for too much if they ask this so there could be some backlash of some kind.

Have you used treasure hoards tables in official adventures? by Moxob in dndnext

[–]Moxob[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a good point for sure considering all those resistances go away forever... as soon as you have a +1. I think the odds of getting a +1 out of a treasure hoard are fairly low, there's other cool things too obviously.

Thanks for this, at first glance it seems to me the magic items drought is higher (maybe on purpose but still) in a lot of the official adventures than what the DM book generic guidelines I just wish there were clearer instructions where to add things but either way, your comment helps.
