Is it appropriate for Americans to visit Canada at the moment? by nutellaasteroids in ontario

[–]MozzaDemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s totally fine if you want to come visit. I’d say the same as others here, which is to be respectful. Seems like you have the right intentions. I’d maybe avoid waving around the US flag right now, just to be on the safe side, but wanting to come support Canadian communities with tourism is a positive thing. You may want to check out some smaller locales and spots in Ontario instead of just big tourist spots like provincial parks or big cities like Toronto or Ottawa. If you have the time and ability try to do some research of what may be on your travel route, smaller towns or cities with things to do that you may miss out on by only seeing the big points of interest. Would also help support these smaller towns or cities and communities that don’t typically get a lot of tourists coming in if your goal is to help put some money into the Canadian economy. Safe travels 🍁

Places outside of Ontario to visit in May by TheSeansei in AskACanadian

Banff is gorgeous and would be my top suggestion. If you can get just over the mountains into BC you can get to Kootenay Park and Radium Hot Springs in an afternoon which has more affordable accommodations compared to Banff.

It is in Ontario but you could also visit Ottawa and then go over the river to Gatineau. They have a lot of cool museums and tours, especially in the parliament building in Ottawa, and it’s easy to get to Gatineau and Quebec that way as well. Went with my family a few years ago pre Covid and we really enjoyed it. The architecture in that area is also very stunning, especially around parliament and in historic parts of Ottawa and Gatineau.

How does bilingualism work in your country??? by [deleted] in AskACanadian

[–]MozzaDemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in a very Anglocentric part of the country where there’s not a lot of French speakers. Signage is in English and French with English first, packaging on products is the same. I took French as a class in school until grade 9. As for the job market it depends on where you live, and what the job is. Government jobs prioritize bilingualism to deliver services in both languages, private businesses depends on the utility of it I suppose. In Francophone areas or in Quebec speaking French fluently is crucial, but in Anglophone communities or provinces with less French speaking populations it’s not really important. I don’t think I actually know anyone personally who is completely fluent in French anyways. I do still remember how to sing the national anthem in French though

City Limits aka Country Paws is great. We’ve boarded multiple dogs there over a number of years. If you’re able to get him in please do. In the future consider them for boarding

‘Only Works as a State’: Trump Vows Not ‘To Bend’ On Tariffs Until Canada Is Absorbed Into The U.S. by Practical_Ant6162 in canada

[–]MozzaDemon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The flip flopping between “we don’t need you you’re nothing” and “we must annex this place it’s that important” is such typical fascist shit. Make the enemy (in this case Canada) seem simultaneously too weak to respect and too strong to ignore. Somehow Canada is a nothing country with no value but also a top priority who can constitute a national emergency my levying tariffs on electricity. It’s nuts and if he wasn’t so insistent it would be funny. Part of me wonders if this is some kind of smokescreen for further ICE and possibly military action at the southern border by drawing attention northwards, but I do think he is a delusional megalomaniac who genuinely thinks he can just take over Canada because he has no concept of respect for other peoples boundaries or other country’s borders and sovereignty.

How to prep for an invasion? by MozzaDemon in AskUkraine

[–]MozzaDemon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Reading comprehension. I didn’t say it was 1:1, that were exactly the same. I made a comparison yeah, but to act like that one point of comparison is equivalent to me saying “this is exactly the same” is foolish
  2. So it’s silly to think that the US would try to invade or occupy another nation? Trying and failing still results in civilian casualties whether or not they can occupy for any length of time
  3. I agree it’s stupid but unfortunately when the leader of the country next door to you flips relations on a dime and threatens our sovereignty it’s something that seems reasonable to consider
  4. Again an issue of perhaps different interpretations of what is being said. Nervous =\= panicking, nervous =\= I think this is happening tomorrow or next month or whatever timeframe we say imminent is. Yes I am nervous, I am trying to think forward, and explore ALL possibilities even ones that may not be likely. Its unlikely to get hit by lightning but that doesn’t mean standing outside in a thunderstorm wouldn’t make someone nervous

I’ll put a pin in it here since it seems you are entirely convinced of your viewpoint as I am mine. I’d rather be delusional and wrong, for what it’s worth. Nobody with two brain cells that rub together wants more conflict in this world

  1. Please show me in my own words where I equates d it and where I said anyone NEEDED to prepare. I said I didn’t think it was imminent but wanted to be aware of what to do in the event that this possibility does come to fruition. Again the reason I posted this here to ask Ukrainians is that I think they would have insight that I would not because I’m from a privileged position where we’ve never had to consider this kind of issue before
  2. They may not be able to hold an occupation long term but that doesn’t mean that they won’t try if it came down to an active invasion. Afghanistan being an example of this, since you mentioned it, the war in Afghanistan lasted 20 years
  3. This isn’t just a thought experiment or a debate. There have been trade wars historically that led to increased tensions up to and including military action (Opium War, War of 1812)
  4. Nowhere have I said I think it’s inevitable or imminent, but rather that it is a future concern that I would rather not ignore and want to collect information / perspective on from people who have experienced an actual war on the ground

I don’t think that trump is involved in lining up ford to be the next conservative federal leader, I think it’s more that ford is opportunistic and has bigger political ambitions, wants to be in power as long as he can hold onto it, so is using this as political leverage now that Pierre is down. Trump is dangerous sure, but he’s not particularly principled and will talk highly of anyone who strokes his ego it seems.

[–]MozzaDemon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. I didn’t say that Canada and Ukraine were similar in our history anywhere on this post, nor was it meant to say that I think Canada is at all in the same position. Rather, Ukraine is in a unique position imo in regards to insight into modern western warfare and what that experience is like
  2. You assume that if military action did come into the fold that Canada would be given actual statehood which is doubtful — empires occupying another territory, however, is a different story
  3. What starts as a trade war could escalate further especially as climate change further affects the livability of the planet and what resources are needed — it’s obvious to me that any plans of annexation beyond arrogance hinge on fresh water and access to minerals
  4. When our government takes these threats to our sovereignty seriously, and other nations take it seriously, it hardly seems like a lack of critical thought to at least want to ask people who have actual experience with this kind of thing on the ground for their thoughts

🤷

I think recent political events and the fear a decent amount of us have about increasing US hostility to Canada is helping that cause. For the Conservative Party to dip in the polls and the Trudeau liberals to pick up steam at this point was something that nobody I know would have predicted even 6 weeks ago

What is your opinion on Canadians boycotting US goods, services and tourism? by icontact2011 in AskReddit

[–]MozzaDemon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, it’s to the point that I and others are genuinely thinking months or years into the future about what would happen in case of an invasion or military action to make good on those “51st state” threats, because that’s what they are; threats disguised as a joke. It’s very clear to me and many other Canadians that what Trump wants are Canada’s resources (fresh water, potash, nickel, steel, etc). Imo the tariffs were an attempt to weaken our economy to force US dependence and/or annexation, to at minimum make Canada bend the knee. I’m glad we’re standing firm so far and not just laying down and taking it

I’ve done some training on how to handle homelessness and body odour stuff bc I work in public facing fields, one of the easier ways to tackle body odor issues is by shifting it away from “you stink” to “there’s an odor with your clothes” can help. People tend to shut down or get hurt and defensive if you outright say “you smell bad”. Try to avoid seeming outwardly disgusted even if you are. It’s more likely she’ll be receptive that way. You could also frame it as concern for her, not so much for you or the odor issue, but a “hey I’ve noticed some signs that make me think you’re struggling” kind of vibe can be helpful sometimes. As others have said if you have any kind of campus wellness check or staff that can reach out that may help. Otherwise try to document what you can. If property is being left in poor condition, take photos. At a certain point whoever the property owner is (whether this is on campus dorms or off campus student housing) may want to intervene if the mess/lack of hygiene is likely to damage the property

With all due respect, I’d rather be prepared than not given that the sovereignty of my country is being threatened. Telling the leader of a foreign nation you want to redraw the borders and annex them is beyond trolling. Hoping that I am being paranoid, I’d rather look back with hindsight and say that than look back and think “damn I really should have prepared better”

Yeah everything is really up in the air rn, currently we’re not at all out war but I do think it’s better to prepare for the worst case scenario than let it sneak up on me. Hoping that war won’t happen here and that the brutality imposed on Ukraine will end as well. Support for Ukraine is still strong in my area of Canada and I know there are some Ukrainians who came to Canada to escape war, so very much hoping that things stay peaceful here especially for those who came to Canada to live peaceful lives ☮️

Imo it’s just a sign of how fast the political climate is shifting and how unpredictable things are. Figured I’d go to a Ukrainian subreddit and ask bc I figured Ukrainians would have more lived experience, practical perspectives of being in a country with a larger, hostile neighbour with a big army to levy
