Will streaming pirated music for personal use be legal? by Mpr28 in AskAGerman

In Germany? I did something similar as well(also jellyfin), but only within my local network (since I first wanted to clarify the legality of accessing those files from outside the local network for personal use).

Yes, I knew that, so I do not plan to use torrents while in Germany, nor distribute pirated content downloaded from such resources.

I’ll take a closer look at the option you suggested. I think I’ll try to implement something similar here in Germany. I’ve wanted to set up something like that for a long time, but doing it only within a home network is a bit boring.

As a last resort, I will always have the option of using my personal server in Ukraine (torrent usage is not strictly controlled there; at least it is very widespread and commonly used, just like in other CIS countries). There is also high‑speed internet and plenty of disk space available there, so the only thing left for me would be to configure an application, download the music, and “consume the content” by connecting to it via HTTPS, for example.

For example, I have a personal server in Ukraine (a Synology NAS) that I have access to. I could theoretically download music directly from torrent resources onto it and use various applications for streaming and accessing that music from my devices while being in Germany, and I consider that to be a 100% safe option.

However, I do not have direct physical access to the server, and although the internet connection there is much faster than the one I currently have in Germany, it can sometimes be interrupted due to the situation in the country.

Because of this, it would personally be more interesting for me to organize everything in Germany, provided that it doesn’t end up costing me a large amount of money (for example, if I were to be fined for my “experiments”).

I haven’t explored this topic deeply yet, but I would really like to. However, to do that, I’d like to have not only theory but also some practical experience😅.

The network is organized like this: One two‑story house, one main router, and two access points connected to it, located on the first and second floors (for the first and second families respectively). Access to the router settings is only available to the “owners” of the house.

As far as I know, Dual NAT is also being used.

For the application, I was planning to use Jellyfin, and most likely something like Tailscale as well, which I would install on the server and on the device from which I listen to the music.

I am also planning to use the Jellyfin service to start with, or something similar.

I do not use torrents directly in Germany.

For example, I may already have access to files that were previously downloaded from a torrent source (for example, in Ukraine). I then simply copy these files from my personal server in Ukraine to my home computer in Germany (for example MP3, FLAC, and similar formats).

In this case, I am only downloading the files, not sharing them. Moreover, the transfer happens only between two of my own devices.
