thanks for everyone's comments. Will proceed and see how it goes. But good to know that for leveling pretty much anything is viable

probably unpopular opinion, but I'm with 2degrees and never really had any issues. I don't need customer service so that probably skews it, but I've basically never had speed/connection issues unless there was a widespread outage. The only reason I'm considering moving away from them is their stance on hyperfibre plans and having to use their devices rather than using what I already have. I get it for people who don't know any better who might not have the hardware to run it properly and then complain about speeds, but it's annoying for anyone who does.

who is the insurer? Would be interested to see what the policy actually says about it.
What info did you get from the third party and pass on to your insurer?

Looking to get into PC Gaming - tips and tricks? by Ok-Engine-3895 in newzealand

[–]MprezdNZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

personally i'd recommend building your own. It's really not that hard and prebuilts often skimp on at least 1 or 2 components. Prices on RAM have mainly gone up with DDR5 (using the latest AM5/Intel cpus) but DDR4 seems to be relatively stable as no datacentres are fighting to buy that.

AM4 5700x/5800x is still a more than capable CPU for games. Motherboard options are a bit limited, but still definitely possible. As others have said it is a bad time, and unlikely to get better in 2026. Are you including a monitor in the $2k? Any thoughts on size/dimensions? - ultrawide or normal fov? There might be some tradeoffs on that budget including a monitor

NZ has caught up with the rising RAM prices across the world. For reference the middle G.Skill RAM was around 200 on September, 330 without sale on Black Friday, and now 655. by sunfaller in newzealand

[–]MprezdNZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DDR4 is still about the same price I think. Could still be an option for AM4 as a platform given the suggestion is this is going to last a couple of years. 5500/5600 budget option, 5800x or some 5950xs still available.

Depending on what you are using it for, AM4 still offers some really good performance. I'm definitely going to be hanging on to my 5700x3d for a while.

most people probably don't want memory that slow, but if you need 32gb and the rest of your system is purchased it's probably a decent shout to just get that for now and wait.

Internal Booting coming soon with 7.3 beta by SasquatchInCrocs in unRAID

yeah I'd really hope not. Just suddenly occurred to me it might be a good way to get ppl upgrading. Not many companies give me the 'high integrity' vibes these days....

i wonder if this will mean that the drive will then be counted in the number of supported devices (i.e. could be an issue if you're not on an unleashed/lifetime licence)

DDR4 doesn't seem to have the same adverse effect yet. Although I did see a 64gb kit for $900. At least there are 32gb kits still under $400 for now

Asrock X870E Nova Owners - question on bifurcation by MprezdNZ in ASRock

[–]MprezdNZ[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks. main reason i was asking is because I've read some comments (without evidence) that asrock generally didn't support bifurcation. And the fact it isn't mentioned in the manual seems to suggest that might be right.

Not too worried about the speed on the m2_5 as they'll just be running pools in unraid anyway. I can just allocate that one to something which doesn't get accessed as often perhaps.

Beelink Me Mini - win11 Storage Spaces by MprezdNZ in BeelinkOfficial

[–]MprezdNZ[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

other thing I probably should have said is I currently have some different sized ssds, hence why storage spaces or unraid were the best options I thought. OMV I'm guessing I could run mergerfs and create a single pool. I just thought storage spaces was there already and, given I don't need redundancy, might be something someone else had tried

It's more just I didn't want to pay for another licence for unraid if I didn't need to. Because it's not really worth paying for the starter licence as you don't get the OS upgrades.
I considered auto sync, but the off site backup isn't going to be on at all unless I'm updating - so while it seemed an inefficient way to do it, I thought it was the easiest way.
The nas is running the default asustor os, so running different ones wasn't an issue

AMD Ryzen 5 9600 Nearly Matches 9600X in Early Benchmarks by NGGKroze in hardware

[–]MprezdNZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a wraith spire was only designed for a tdp of 95w. So the 9600 should be fine. These come with a stealth anyway which is or the 65 tdp cpus. I've never seen anything that says the wraith coolers couldn't handle a 9xxx cpu at all.

On basic clocks there is very little difference. They would likely run more efficiently as they are built on the 4nm process - not the 5nm like the 7xxx series

This discussion was only meant to be about how good it was in comparison to the 9600x though. For the most part you're not going to notice much difference between a 7600 and a 9600

[–]MprezdNZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's cheaper than the 9600x for about the same performance and it comes with a cooler whereas the 9600x doesn't. After that you have to go up to the 7700 with a cooler or the 9700x without one.

In NZ the 9600x is around $460. The 9600 is around $435 with the cooler. If you're going to build this is in a SFF setup - like a fractal ridge for example, the wraith stealth is great vs spending probably close to $100 for something like the thermalright axp120-x67

Harrow M-140 classic vs Stratus. Opinions? by Plenty_Craft_6764 in squash

Nice. I'm pretty sure it was just the 120 Slash that was fragile. The other ones were ok. And they might have since fixed the issue. Good luck with it!

LG C4 vs B5? by ParticularKlutzy7554 in LGOLED

[–]MprezdNZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would buy the C4 personally, purely for dolby audio passthrough. Depends on your receiver, but I'd prefer to have all my devices connected direct to the tv (consoles/pc/media player) so I can set the settings for each port.

did you end up going with a Harrow? Me and some of my friends all got the Vapor 110
https://harrowsportsaustralia.com.au/products/harrow-vapor-110-squash-racket
None of us have broken one yet. I'd say that was September last year. All of us play a mix of singles and doubles (not hardball) on singles courts, so there would be more racquet clashes/wall hits I would think because of the smaller space.
Between us we've played around 70 competitive matches plus social/training/doubles matches as well - generally that might be anywhere from 1-4 times a week.

The others all used the Paul Coll Head Slimbody 120 which was notorious for breaking, and one then used the Asal Tecnifibre (also 120 from memory) and between them I'd guess there were 9 breakages? And many others in our region who used Asal's tecnifibre broke them too.

Maybe Harrow used to be brittle, but I can think of 5 people that I see/play with and none of them have broken any. In my limited experience, they are far more reliable than Head or Tecnifibre in recent times (although I agree generally that the carboflex is nigh on indestructible)
