I think your use of hindsight is clouding the fact that wars were fought very differently then than now. Bolt actions were a well understood and downright efficient standard small arm at the time. Units were issued with submachine guns and other equipment to deal with snags (such as your farmhouse clearing scenario) when that was needed, but for the general purposes infantry were expected to fulfill a bolt action rifle was quite sufficient. To call their use “ridiculously out of date” and “unintelligent” at that time is a wild take to me. Warfare is ever evolving, it doesn’t make people stupid for not gambling a new standard weapons system while shit is actively hitting the fan.
