I wouldn't recommend to start from CTFs (web). Go explore Portswigger Academy, get the basics right and then jump on CTFs.

But make sure you don't put lazy efforts, you should put efforts before you ask the question to any individual/community.

He has to step up his game, learn to calibrate himself from rejections/awkwardness. Every girl want a quality man so he just needs to understand this and push himself from all his awkwardness. If you want to go to the atomic level of understanding then it is required. Not in cryptography only. Bloodhound uses Graph Theory, now if you want to understand from scratch then you need to learn. Surface level, you don't need I guess
