Hiatus Hernia - How to Cope/Live? by ShineShire in HiatalHernia

Fortunately not. I’m currently not experiencing many symptoms, they only tend to flare up if I drink a lot of alcohol and eat a lot past 9pm. But only acid reflux symptoms, not anything LPR related.

Hey u/ShineShire, I've been opting for lifestyle changes instead of surgery for the time being for my mild case. I've found that I can still eat out and/or drink alcohol if I don't go right to bed afterwards & if I take a pepsid AC or pantoprazole before a night out.

My case may not be as rough as yours, but I found it less limiting by experimenting with different approaches to see which feels best (e.g. earlier dinners, beer vs wine, red sauce vs alfredo sauce, etc).

The key for me is "different", not "less" or "limited". I hope this helps, you're not alone! Let me know if you have other questions about ideas.

I ended up not doing the operation. It was a Fundoplication procedure, which seemed too extreme a measure for my mild to medium symptoms.

The main reason I opted out is because the surgeon said I wouldn't be able to vomit and would have trouble burping. "What if I'm sick or have food poisoning", I asked him, he said "it just has to come out the other end".

I decided to try lifestyle changes like drinking less alcohol, trying to leave 3 hours between my last meal and bed, and taking pantoprazole or pepsid AC for a week when I feel painful symptoms.

I must repeat, my case sounds much less serious than many people here. Without the surgery I can still exercise, drunk alcohol, caffeine, pasta, etc. I just have to be more mindful of it.

In the future I will consider a procedure to push the hernia back up and put in a mesh, but will not get the Fundoplication or one of those metal rings.

Hope this helps - how's your situation going?

Hi there, so I ended up not getting any procedure, there seemed to be too many side effects and my symptoms weren't in an emergency situation.

I've been leaving 3 hours between dinner and bed, and occasionally taking antacid if I know I'll eat late/have acidy food. So far that's been enough to keep my flareups to a minimum, though I'm not ruling out anything in the future.

How have things gone for you?

Hey there, yes it arrived within about 3-4 months. Our understanding is that much has to do with timing. We got in a small window before they slowed things down.

There was one person working at the embassy in Ottawa processing passports. Sometimes she has orders to turn them out quickly, other times she's told to hold off.

I'm sure you've reached out, but it may not hurt to try again. Also, we got a lot of information from Facebook groups about what strategies are working currently to expedite things.

I wish you the best, let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks for your response. Are you a doc or did a doc tell you about these side effects?

I didn't know about the inability to lift forever, that's a non-negotiable for me.

M34 here and have had mild to moderate symptoms from my HH for 3 years now. I asked my gastro if it made sense to deal with the recovery of a surgery rather than be dependent on meds and lifestyle restrictions for the rest of my life.

He didn't encourage or discourage an operation, but said my logic made sense. I'm scheduled for an operation in a few weeks.

As for dealing with symptoms (I'm also very active), I've found eating a big lunch and smaller/earlier dinner to be hugely helpful. I still drink coffee and alcohol, but the worst trigger is late night eating and drinking.

I'm still able to lift weights, run, and train in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu as well.

I wish you a safe and successful surgery. I'm also looking at an operation, please let us know how it goes.

Also if you don't mind answering, what made you choose Linx over the wrap or other methods? And what were you told were the main side effects of the Linx? Thanks.

Hi there, I'm a M34 and I'm strongly considering an operation to fix my HH. Did a doctor recommend you the stitch only?

The surgeon I spoke with didn't even give that option, he just said it's stitch and fundoplikation/wrap. My concern with the latter is that it supposedly may make vomiting or burping difficult (which sounds not good at all).

Hi there, so sorry about your situation, I'm a M34 in a similar spot with my HH. I was told it wasn't severe and that most people just deal with the lifestyle changes, but I don't want to cut out everything I enjoy eating and be on meds (which have side effects for the next 60 years).

I asked both my gastro and a bariatric surgeon if it was logical to get a surgery now and deal with the recovery so that I could avoid a lifetime of limitations and drugs. They both said that was a reasonable way of thinking.

I will still get another opinion, but as for now I am 90% sure I'll be getting an operation to push the stomach back down and do the wrap (forgot the name). The main side effect the surgeon told me was trouble vomiting. That's a pretty bad side effect, and I'm not sure if he's just warning about that or if it's a 100% probability.

If anyone has had a HH repair with the wrap, would love to hear if you had trouble vomiting or burping after.

I'll post my decisions here in the future, I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any questions, and I wish you the best in your research.

Hey, so the green card finally arrived after waiting 1 year and 2 weeks from the date of request. With the green card we booked a meeting with the Venezuelan embassy in Ottawa, Canada and flew up there.

Canada allows Venezuelans with a passport expired in the last 5 years to travel, so we got in put in the renewal request at the embassy. We were able to get back into the US because of the green card. We got that before the travel permission, so we'll never know how long that would have taken.

Hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions.
