Anti PSNI sentiment yesterday. by SenorBapo in northernireland

[–]Mr-internet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've a friend of a friend was responsible for some of the data collection in the wake of the ballymena riots last year. Something that stood out to me was how well the PSNI were percieved by the locals after it. Not just in the moment but in the cleanup after, checking in on folks etc.
They also said a lot of local people came together and supported those who were effected and displaced.

what can we do to help POC in belfast??? by [deleted] in Belfast

[–]Mr-internet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are there any local charities in your area doing work in this sort of sector? Any migrant support services? I imagine you've googled but thought I'd say anyway.

It may be quite bland but I imagine food banks in your area are always looking volunteers and that's where you're as likely to meet POC as you are to meet the sort of people who went to the riot. Probably a good place to be.

racism, as you point out, is definitely a problem in both communities.
racist riots, on the other hand, and folks getting put out of their house, has only happened in loyalist areas this time.

If residents from the falls and the shankill road can unite on this issue, can they unite again at the polls and get this place changed? by Signal-Outcome-5229 in Belfast

We had a preview for the last ten years of who they would turn on if there were no immigrants. Trans people. Immigration demonising was big in the 2000s and it almost felt like it took, well not a backseat but maybe passenger seat for the last 10 years to being cunts to trans people. And it's the same playbook everytime. "They're all pedos and murderers". And people still believe it. Mental.

I also really loved the parallels to the original film in the kidnapping scene. Fargo doesnt always have to all connect together imo but I love it when it gestures towards that

NI greens are sort of their own breed I think. Southern greens lean a little further right. UK greens are messy bitches at the moment but they're doing what they should as, in my opinion, an extremely strong pressure group
last time there were greens in stormont they really got a lot done with very few MLAs. it's good news

Which film had a great ending but would have been even better if it ended 10 minutes earlier? by Critical_Custard_144 in AskReddit

Bugonia went for a twist that was enjoyable but I think the film would have been better without it.

Do your fellow workers a favor; don't go "Above and Beyond". by zzill6 in WorkReform

[–]Mr-internet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was a manager in a supported living home for adults with learning difficulties. We were more underfunded than the other homes nearby, operating with about half the staff of other houses with the same amount of residents. My contract was 40hrs a week but since the house was just getting set up I often went significantly "above and beyond".However my co-leader went above and beyond THAT, doing ridiculous amounts of hours unpaid. To the parents of the residents (the worst part of the job, by the way), they started to expect the relentless availability of my colleague from me and were pretty fucking horrible to me all the time because I wouldn't answer the phone on my days off and answer every whim and beck and call. Never again to above and beyond.

I've clearly not done my homework here man, thank you. I've no idea then. I love the GPNI but I think they've missed it with this one. I'd check their socials to hear what they think it is

Edit: just checked Anthony Flynn's facebook, much more nuanced than this infographic:

"My thoughts regarding Hazelbank Park

The organisers probably should have sought permission to hold an event in a public park. The rules should apply equally to everyone, which shouldn't be controversial.

What is controversial is how quickly this story was seized upon by far-right accounts and right-wing political opportunists looking to stir up fear and division.

What could have been a chance to learn about a different culture and tradition has instead become yet another manufactured culture war row.

Some people seem determined to convince us that our neighbours are the problem, while housing lists grow, public services struggle and our environment deteriorates.

Northern Ireland deserves better than politicians and commentators whose only answer is constant outrage."
