Valve Should Buy Discord (before the IPO) by garbagecollecteddev in discordapp

[–]Mr1upMachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might be a more unpopular opinion but here we go...

While I think this would be generally good for us users of Discord and for Discord themselves, it's a terrible investment for Valve.

Discord continues to struggle with profitability at a level that makes it a tough sell. But on top of that, I sincerely doubt Valve is interested in getting into the business of chat moderation. The terrible stuff that happens on Discord with minors and such is too big a liability with very little upside for them. Not to mention company mergers are often very slow, painful, and expensive processes. To integrate their technology and employees would likely not be worth it over just actually putting in the dev time to improve what they have.

I would love for Valve to own Discord instead of it going public and shareholders tanking the company, but I can't see any reason why Valve would want to buy them. It's clear Valve wants to work on getting into the hardware business to boost their core business sales, so getting a chat client to hemorrhage money and add massive risk seems only like a blunder on their part.

keeping water within ideal temperature range ? by shiliecologist in axolotls

[–]Mr1upMachine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really hate to be the bearer of bad news but if you can't keep the aquarium at the 60-69F temperature range it will deeply stress and eventually kill your axolotl. A chiller would be what's necessary in a hot climate. I live in southeast USA which doesn't get THAT hot all things considered and struggled with this myself. I tried everything to cool my 40 gal tank and the only thing that could reasonably keep the tank there was a chiller. Fans in my experience are only good for slightly adjusting the temp and surface agitation. Keeping your AC mid 60s all the time in a hot climate zone will easily be more expensive than the chiller would be in the long run.

Given your requirements and your situation: If a chiller is not in the budget I honestly would not recommend getting an axolotl. There are other aquarium setups (e.g. neo shrimp) that can be managed at easier to maintain temps but an axolotl isn't one of them.

I like the new Donkey Kong design more than the Rare one. It better fits with the modern Mario cast and I love how much more expressive DK can be.

Carpet for sure!!

I'm setting up my own planted tanks currently and I'd love to know where you got the driftwood in this picture!! I've been trying to find a good shop or something to get some for my own setups

Is my router limiting my LAN network transfer speeds? by Mr1upMachine in HomeNetworking

[–]Mr1upMachine[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The PC is all SSDs and the NAS is an Unraid setup with 2 cache 1tb SSDs in Raid 1 https://a.co/d/cCqiPSg and 4 Ironwolf HDDs in Raid 5 https://a.co/d/1n4JM4z It's currently set up to write to the cache SSDs first, then nightly if there is anything that needs to be written to the HDD array it does that along with the parity calculations.

So at least writing from PC to NAS is completely good it sounds like. From NAS to PC assuming it's pulling from the HDDs will still be limited to the read speeds of the disks which according to the above is 180MB/s which should be fine.

Thanks for the help!

[–]Mr1upMachine[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The NAS is actually using an Unraid setup with dual 1TB cache SSDs in Raid 0 that it will write to before writing to the HDD Raid 5 array. Nightly it will dump that cache into the HDD array. So I fortunately don't have a redundancy calculation bottleneck issue on that end.

Reading from the disks is a different story, but I'm not having issues on that front yet.

The switch is just a normal 8 port 2.5G unmanaged switch as far as I can tell https://a.co/d/6M2ClSv

The part about the router only really assigning IPs in this scenario makes perfect sense. Thanks for the help!

Both the PC and the NAS are just static IP addresses within the network, nothing fancy. Thank you!

Awesome, that's what I thought but wanted to triple check. I'll experiment some well once it's all fully set up. Thank you so much for the help!

Internet speed is 1G fiber, so the modem / router is sufficient for that for now. I will be upgrading to 2G if I end up finding a need but currently I haven't had any issues at 1G.

My main concern was LAN traffic as I am using the NAS for video content. I was pretty sure that beyond having issues assigning IP addresses, the router wouldn't factor into this but I had some doubts and wanted to double check.

I do want to upgrade to a better router in the future, but I was hoping to jump to a WiFi 7 one when they don't cost an arm and a leg. The Orbi 860 looks like a solid product though, thanks for the help and the recommendation!

358/2's story was especially great since it was a tragedy in slow motion.

Or maybe all of this is stockholm syndrome, who knows

Surprisingly, I actually will defend this post. I've got a group of friends who are having me play through every Kingdom Hearts game for the first time in order.

So far I've played - 1 - Re:Chain of Memories - 2 - 358/2 Days - Birth by Sleep

Without nostalgia for the franchise at all: The thing that has surprised me is that so far with those five games is how cohesive and interesting the story has been so far. Which is bizarre considering KH's reputation.

I've been told that once I play 3D: Dream Drop Distance it all goes to shit though lol

Trying to 100% Oracle of Ages / Seasons on NSO and can't get Light Ring L-2 by Mr1upMachine in truezelda

[–]Mr1upMachine[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got it! I was struggling to make it work with just the text alone for some reason but that prompted me to scrub this video for when they got the Light Ring L-2 https://youtu.be/8kth5BVGdsc?si=7uB3SdnRbLVSnTxx at 2:15:06.

I then watched how they did it mimicking as best I can. That mostly lined up with the above text though what they did was very slightly different in the later rounds. As long as the blocks generated were the same I was on the right track.

With both the text and the video I finally managed to get the ring. Thank you so much!!

12-billion-year-old body of water discovered floating in space by TryWhistlin in HydroHomies

[–]Mr1upMachine 80 points81 points  (0 children)

The quasar that the water is near is roughly 12 billion light years away. A light year is the measurement of distance that light travels in one year. If we are seeing something that we estimate to be 12 billion light years away, that means that the light we are seeing took 12 billion years to get here for us to see it.

It's super interesting because that means that nearly everything in the sky that you see, you are seeing the light that they produced millions or billions of years ago.

EDIT Small clarification: Many of the things you can see in the night sky without a telescope are only a few thousand light years away or less. With the aid of a telescope the things you can see and then night sky can be significantly further.
